Kazimierz Świtalski
(1886-1962).
This book presents life and political activity of
Kazimierz Świtalski
who was a very close and one of the most trusted collaborators of
Józef Piłsudski. Świtalski
served at many significant state posts in the
Second Polish Republic
-
he was the Minister of Religion and Public
Enlightenment
(1928-1929),
the Prime Minister
(14
IV-
7 XII 1929)
and
the Speaker of the
Sejm
(1930-1935).
In the first half of
1936
he gave up
active political life in consequence of the internal conflict among the
adherents of
Piłsudski.
His main activity became editing The Collective
Works of the Marshal.
Świtalski
spent the Second World War in German
Oflags. In the years
1948-1955
he was repressed by communists in the
Polish People s Republic.
The book is based mainly on Polish and foreign archival resources
(to be found, among others, in the Institutes of J.
Piłsudski
in the USA
and the UK). Other types or resource materials have also been used
-
published documents, press, private people s accounts, as well as
extensive literature on the subject.
The biography of
Świtalski
is presented in the chronological order.
It begins with the description of the childhood and youth, when his
independence and rather ideologically leftist views were being formed,
which in consequence lead him to the camp of Pilsudski s supporters in
the last years before the 1st World War. In the years
1915-1917
he was the
head of the office of the First Brigade of the Legions (he kept a diary
which was found very valuable by future historians)
.
In October and
November
1918
he took part in the defense of Lvov against Ukrainian
nationalists. In the independent Poland
(1918-1923)
he worked in the
Civil Office of
Józef Piłsudski,
the chief leader of the army.

years following the Pilsudski s May
Coup d État
in
1926
were
the most significant for
Kazimierz
Switalski s political activity. He
belonged, together with Walery
Sławek
and
Aleksander Prystor,
to

Tomasz Serwatka
the narrow decision-making group of the Pilsudski s camp (so called
colonel group ) which followed the principal guidelines of the
Marshal. According to the author,
Świtalski
was the most intelligent
and independent thinking member of this group. As the Speaker of
the
Sejm
he concentrated on the revision of the constitution of Polish
Republic and then, in April, on its change. After the death of
Józef
Pilsudski, the entire environment of
Świtalski
was within one year
eliminated from the real political game by the two remaining fractions
of Pilsudski s supporters circled around the president
Ignacy Mościcki
and the adherents of the Marshal Edward
Rydz-Śmigły.
Apart from the subsequent stages of Switalski s political biography,
the author also describes his private life
-
two marriages, family situation,
health condition, leisure activities, acquaintances and friendships. The
reader s attentions can be drawn by the pre-war articles by
Świtalski
and
his pro-Pilsudski lecture action in the Woldenberg
Oflag
in the Western
Pomerania
during the 2nd World War. A very interesting (although
extremely dramatic) period in his biography fell on the years following
the 2nd World War when
Świtalski
was left with nothing to live on.
Broken down after his only son s death
(Jacek
was killed in the Warsaw
Upspring) he did not undertake any political activity. Despite that,
he was the only prominent Pilsudski s supporter staying in the Polish
People s Republic who got imprisoned by the Security Service.
During the trial he undertook a real struggle for survival. He was
sentenced to

years imprisonment. Being released in November
1955,
in extremely hard conditions, he took up the effort to safe keep and
to prepare for publication the resource materials concerning the First
Marshal of Poland, which took him

years.
