λ
Ifjfihe Zamoyski
are one of the most notable, aristocratic families in
4L
Poland and they have contributed several golden pages to its his¬
tory. It is therefore not surprising, that some of its prominent mem¬
bers, as well as the
Ordynacja
(entailed estate) belonging to it, should
have occupied the attention of historians over the years. There have
been dozens of books on the life and role of the founder of the
Or¬
dynacja,
Chancellor and
Hetman
(Commander-in-chief of the Polish
Army) Jan Zamoyski, numerous studies of Chancellor
Andrzej
Zamoyski, many works on the sons of
Stanisław Kostka
Zamoyski
and his wife
Zofia Czartoryska,
and much has been written on ques¬
tions connected with the history of the great Zamoyski
latifundium,
its economic development and the artistic patronage of successive in¬
cumbents. But the lack of a serious and broadly documented study
of the remarkable course, with its many achievements and failures,
of the life of the 12th master
(Ordynat)
of the family entail,
Stanisław
Kostka
Zamoyski, a leading representative of Poland s social, intel¬
lectual and political elite of the end of the eighteenth and the begin¬
ning of the nineteenth centuries has made itself felt for some time. It
676
Abstract
is with the intention of filling this gap that the author of the present
collection of studies was motivated.
This book is a first attempt at a comprehensive biography of
Stanisław Kostka
Count Zamoyski, born in
1775
to the Crown Chan¬
cellor
Andrzej
Zamoyski and his wife princess
Konstancja
Czarto-
ryska. The book is divided into several sections, each dealing with
a different aspect of his life, together giving a full picture of his per¬
son, his views, activity and achievements.
In an introduction the author presents the extant sources on
the life and work of
Stanisław Kostka
Zamoyski.
The first chapter covers
Stanisław Kostka
Zamoyski s youth. It
describes his parents and his siblings in the domestic context and his
education and upbringing. It contains vignettes of everyday family s
life and places it in the public sphere by representing the political po¬
sitions of his parents and siblings. It shows how his early life was
formed within one of the greatest families in Poland, which itself was
conditioned by the ideas and sense of duty derived from the Enlighten¬
ment. It points to the fact that the upbringing of the son of Poland s
Arystydes (Chancellor
Andrzej
Zamoyski) and of his ambitious wife
was for many years in the hands of a remarkable man, the brilliant
Stanisław Staszic,
later President of the Royal Warsaw Society of
Friends of Sciences, which left a deep mark on the protagonist of this
book. It also shows, how the position of his family and frequent jour¬
neys gave him a knowledge of the world, a broad education, the com¬
mand of languages and social graces. One of the journeys described
here is a typical eighteenth-century Grand Tour through southern
Europe and Italy in the company of his parents, his brother and sis¬
ter, and his tutor
Staszic.
Two events had a fundamental effect on the
formation of Zamoyski s character. One was his marriage to the most
beautiful and the most virtuous of Polish woman as princess
Zofia
Czartoryska was generally described, which not only enhanced his
stature as a man but also resulted in a numerous progeny that saved
the family from extinction. The second great event was the death in
1800
of his elder brother
Aleksander,
which placed new tasks before
him as master of the
Ordynacja
and as a public figure. There follows
Abstract
677
an
account
of how, after years of study, liberated from the powerful
influence of his mother and the tutelage of
Staszic,
whom he detested,
Zamoyski embarked on a series of voyages around Western Europe in
the course of which he noted down his observations and thoughts with
the intention of introducing the most progressive ideas into various
areas of life in Poland as well as his own lands. Of particular impor¬
tance was the journey around England, in the course of which he ac¬
quainted himself with this most economically advanced of all
European countries. The economic processes, social relationships and
customs he observed there became an example of everything he
wanted to introduce into his own country. He was to be successful in
the implementation of many of these plans, as subsequent sections of
this book reveal.
The second and third chapter describes the everyday social
and public life of Zamoyski and his wife during the period of the
Duchy of Warsaw and the Kingdom of Poland. It contains de¬
scriptions of life in the Warsaw residence of the Zamoyskis, the
Blue Palace, with its balls, receptions and celebrations. It also con¬
tains information on the management of the house, the finances,
and the master s relations with the domestic staff. The education
and upbringing of Zamoyski s numerous offspring are also covered
here, with information on their later lives. Another subject dealt
with in third chapter is the public life of
Stanisław
and
Zofia
Zamoyski, both in the literary salons in which they played a part
and particularly through the Warsaw Benevolent Society, of which
they were among the founders. It moves on to the subject of
Stanisław
Zamoyski s involvement in the Royal Warsaw Society of
Friends of Sciences as well as his role in the foundation and work¬
ings of the Warsaw Economic and Agricultural Society, the Credit
Association, the Grain Products Association, and in the introduc¬
tion of paper money into the Duchy of Warsaw. The last pages are
devoted to Zamoyski s work on the educational bodies of the
Duchy of Warsaw and the Kingdom of Poland.
The forth chapter is devoted to cultural, artistic and educa¬
tional matters, which occupied a major place in the lives of both
678
Abstract
Stanisław and Zofia.
Their patronage in the areas of architecture,
sculpture and garden design is well covered. Particular stress is laid
on the planning and execution of architectural projects in the resi¬
dences at
Zamość, Klemensów
and Warsaw (the ground-breaking
neo-classical Blue Palace), the building of schools, hospitals and
churches, in which many notable Polish and foreign architects were
involved. In a sub-section of this chapter the author stresses the im¬
portance of the Zamoyskis laying out of parks and gardens, mainly
in the English style. Not surprisingly for such an active patron of the
intellectual and artistic life of his times, Zamoyski was also a re¬
markable connoisseur and collector, of books, prints, archives, as
well as objects of national significance and some world-class works of
art. Particular note is made of his great contribution in the area of
bringing together a rich collection of ancient and contemporary
books and manuscripts with the aim of making them available to men
of letters and learning, and thereby founding, in a bespoke building,
one of the greatest libraries on Polish territory at the time. Of hardly
less consequence for Poland s heritage was his creation of a family
museum. Attention is also given to Zamoyski s generous protection
and assistance accorded to artists and men of letters, and also his
contacts with many celebrated Polish and European figures in these
fields. The contribution of the Zamoyskis to the erection of monu¬
ments and the protection of the national heritage is also covered, as
are their musical and dramatic interests.
Chapter Five is devoted to Zamoyski s other passion, namely
his work in the field of education on his own estates. These bore fruit
in the area of secondary education, where his Zamoyski Schools in
Zamość
and then Szczebrzeszyn were counted among the leading
schools in the land. There follows a description of Zamoyski s role in
the development of elementary schooling, as well as agricultural and
professional education, which included forestry schools and
farmhands schools, which prepared future agricultural and forestry
workers and gave them the requisite skills. These were based on the
most up-to-date European standards.
Abstract
679
The sixth chapter deals with
Stanisław Kostka
Zamoyski as
manager of the
Ordynacja
from
1801
to
1835.
There follows an ac¬
count of his involvement in the transformation of the family town of
Zamość
into the property of the state, and the social consequences of
this. It goes on to examine his preparedness for the task and the state
of the
Ordynacja
when he acceded to it, and his efforts to improve
the standard of management in a number of sub-sections dealing with
specific areas; first the changes he introduced into the method of
management, then the modernization of each branch of economic ac¬
tivity conducted on its territory. Particular stress is laid on the
achievements in the industrial areas such as the workshop projected
and built in
Zwierzyniec
by English specialists, which produced agri¬
cultural and industrial implements and machinery, and on other metal-
working industries, all of which placed Zamoyski in the front rank of
the pioneers of mechanization and agricultural progress in Poland.
The author goes on to discuss food production and processing, no¬
tably the establishment of one of the most modern breweries in
Poland, designed by English brewers and fitted out with equipment
manufactured in
Zwierzyniec.
The areas of milling and distilling are
also dealt with. In discussing the cloth-making industry, stress is laid
on the role of the workshop in
Janów Ordynacki.
Much space is also
devoted to the paper-making and printing industries, particularly
the paper-mill of
Jadów.
Also the glassmaking, ceramic and brick¬
works on the territory of the
Ordynacja.
Attention is also paid to the
efforts to replace the outdated three-field system with rotation of
crops throughout the
Ordynacja.
Zamoyski s work in planting or¬
chards, creating vegetable gardens and building greenhouses is cov¬
ered, as is the role of the farm at
Podzamcze
as a kind of
experimental field-station in the matter of crop-rotation, the growing
of new varieties of vegetables, shrubs, plants and trees. In the mat¬
ter of animal husbandry, attention is drawn to the intensification of
sheep-breeding, cattle and English horses. Next, the author addresses
the subject of forestry and timber industry, and this reveals why the
forests of the
Ordynacja
came to be regarded as exemplary and pro¬
gressive in their field. Attention is also focused on the river trade in
680
Abstract
the
Ordynacja,
and, in the final section, on Zamoyski s efforts to im¬
prove the surveying and measurement of land, the problems related
to tenants and colonists, and finally to the first attempts to emanci¬
pate the peasants by replacing work-rent with money-rent.
The weightiest section of the book is that describing Zamoyski s
political life between
1806
and
1832
(Chapter seventh). It opens with
a presentation of the attitudes of Poland s elite in that part of the
Austrian partition which remained under
Habsburg
dominion until
1809.
The next stage, covering the years
1809-1813,
shows Zamoyski
committing himself enthusiastically to the Napoleonic orientation
represented by the Duchy of Warsaw. His role during the Polish-
Austrian war of
1809
is discussed, including his part in the creation
and functioning of the Provisional Government of the two Galicias
and his patriotic gesture in raising an infantry regiment at his own
expense. His subsequent efforts to maintain Galicia s autonomy,
through visits to Dresden and Paris (end of
1809
and beginning of
1810),
are followed by an account of his role as senator and
woje¬
woda
in the government of the Duchy of Warsaw
(1810-11).
Zamoyski s role in the momentous events of
1812,
as the leader of
the General Confederation of the Kingdom of Poland, and the be¬
ginning of
1813,
when he had to dissolve the Council of the Confed¬
eration, reflected the difficult choices facing Poles at the time. He
performed a political volte-face which brought him to the side of tsar
Alexander I and led to his involvement in the creation of the new
Kingdom of Poland, followed by his work in bodies such as the con¬
stitutional commission, the Supreme Provisional Council and the
Provisional Government. There follows an account of Zamoyski s in¬
volvement in the political life of the Kingdom of Poland. Zamoyski s
political career between
1816
to
1826
as president of the Senate of
the Kingdom of Poland takes the form of a gradual move towards the
ultraconservative
camp. Following the death of Alexander I Zamoyski
became a faithful subject of the new tsar Nicholas I, as a result of
which he found himself, not without personal misgivings, in the In¬
vestigative Committee concerned with the uncovering of crimes
against the state, aimed at the patriotic opposition, which made him
Abstract
681
the object of sharp criticism. The next paragraphs show him trying,
through his work in the
sejm
in pursuit of a number of initiatives, to
regain the respect of the patriots. A series of unfortunate public ut¬
terances and actions only served to deepen the chasm between him
and those circles. The most tragic in consequences for Zamoyski was
the end of the year
1830.
The outbreak of the November Insurrec¬
tion faced him with the choice of joining it or declaring against it,
and in the hope that he would be in a position to play a placatory
role in the interests of the country, he chose the option of loyalty to
the tsar and left for St Petersburg. The next paragraphs cover the po¬
sition taken by Zamoyski s family in the uprising and the formation
at the expense of the
Ordynacja
of a regiment of cavalry, the 5th
Zamoyski lancers. On the subject of Zamoyski s stay in St Peters¬
burg from the end of
1830
to April
1832,
the author reveals that he
was in effect the tsar s hostage, unable to leave Russia despite re¬
peated attempts. Meanwhile, the revolutionary parliament
(Sejm)
in Warsaw struck him off, declaring him to be unworthy to be pres¬
ident of the Senate, despite the attempts of friends to salvage his
good name. The last sections describe his return home, his tattered
reputation, and his decision to leave his motherland forever.
The eighth chapter covers the last years of Zamoyski s life
(1832-56),
spent in self-imposed exile in Vienna, his arrangements
concerning his sons, and the death in Florence in
1837
of his wife
Zofia.
His everyday life in Vienna is described on the basis of ac¬
counts and memoirs, as is his death in
1856.
The chapter concludes
with the arrangements made by
Stanisław
and
Zofia
with respect to
their children and an assessment of Stanislaw s life and achievements
as seen through contemporary eyes.
In a postscript, the author attempts to sum up the subject of
the book.
The book is enriched by a set of illustrations, which presents
a rich iconography of Zamoyski, his family, people and places con¬
nected with them. It is also accompanied by an index.
