When the German government sen¬
tenced Ernst Toller to an imprisonment
of five years for his participation in the
Bavarian revolution of
1919,
it uninten¬
tionally did him a profound service. For
in those five years his genius came to ma¬
turity. He wrote two of his finest plays,
THE MACHINE-WRECKERS and MAN AND
the masses, and took his place as one of
the great writers of our times. And it was
in these years that he wrote the famous
the swallow book, which appears in a
new version in this volume.
All through the period of his impris¬
onment, Toller was corresponding with
poets, writers, artists, scientists; with
workers, with friends, with children, with
his wife. In his letters he set forth, poig¬
nantly and concisely, the maturing depth
of his thoughts on man and the cosmos,
on politics and art. Later, these letters were
smuggled out of Germany at great risk.

Ellis Roberts preserves perfectly the
beauty of style in the original letters and
poems. The numerous illustrations in¬
clude some of the author s documents,
photographs of him during the war and
in prison, as well as scenes from his plays.
