adam_text	MIGRATION TO THE HOME OF THE NATION MAJORITY* OPTING OF SERBS IN HUNGARY 1920-1931 SUMMARY The victory of Serbia in the First World War and the formation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1918 significanced a conviction amongst the majority of Serbs that the Serbian national issue had been solved, as the state encompassed the majority of the Serbian nation, as well as Serbian national territories. The majority of the Serbian people living out of Yugoslavia, in other, mainly neighbouring countries, wished to migrate to their home national state. That possibility was offered to Serbs in Hungary, under of the articles of Treaty of Trianon on peace with Hungary, of 4 June 1920. Serbs in Hungary mainly completed their opting for Yugoslav citizenship within the agreed time period for applying for the option (26 July 1921 - 26 January 1922) and they were especially to do so by diplomatic and consular representatives of Yugoslavia in Hungary, as well as by the Serbian clergy of the Buda Eparchy headed by Episcop Georgije (Zubkovitch). The process of emigration of Serbian and Hungarian optioners to the state of option encountered problems for which reason the governments of Yugoslavia and Hungary made agreements on four occassions to extend the emigration deadline. A smaller number of Serbs optioners emigrated from Hungary to Yugoslavia in 1922-1923, while the majority migrated in 1924, until which time, basicly, Serbs optioners from the Budapest region and the Szeged Triangle migrated to Yugoslavia. In the next couple of years remained the problem of emigration of Serbs optioners from Baranya and Baja Triangle, which lasted all until 1 November 1930, when they emigrated from Hungary to Yugoslavia as well. The Hungarian authorities allowed a smaller number of them to remain in Hungary the latest until 1 April 1931 by which time the emigration of Serbs optioners from Hungary to Yugoslavia was completed. Serbs optioners from Hungary were mostly settled and allocated land in settlements throughout Vojvodina. At the of 1920 there were around 19.000 Serbs in Hungary, out od which namber, from 1921-1930, around 14.000 Serbs, i.e. 2/3 of Serbs in Hungary, opted for Yugoslav citizenship and emigrated to Yugoslavia, thus at the end of 1931, there were 7.136 Serbs remaining in Hungary.
