For many.of us the possibility of using science and technology to
manipulate human behaviour engenders a feeling of alarm and
revulsion. So does the use of genetic engineering to shape human
characteristics.
Developments in neurobiology and psychology now greatly
increase our ability to alter people's experiences and to control
their motives and actions. Techniques for choosing people's genes
may be with us sooner than we care to think.
Here Jonathan Glover examines the moral dilemmas involved in
deciding what sort of future we want. He considers the desirability
of using genetic engineering to modify human nature. He then
looks critically at the sources of our hostility to various forms of
brain technology. He proposes a set of values to replace our
present inarticulate resistance and to guide future decisions.
Finally there is a discussion of generations to come. How far
should we shape their lives according to our own values? |
