SUMMARY
If you consider my whole life, I haven t spent much time in
Przemyśl,
but it
has always been the centre of the world for me 1. These words written by Helena
Rosenbach Deutsch
are a great tribute paid by a world-famous scientist to the
local environment. Setting aside the subjective views concerning the role that
Przemyśl
played in the world history, these words are a good point of departure
for a discussion about the local intelligentsia during the period of Galician autonomy
and the inter-war period. It is from this background that Helena
Rosenbach Deutsch
and many others came from. Their mindset and life attitude were shaped by the
unique conditions and atmosphere of mid-war
Przemyśl.
One cannot forget that at
that time the city was co-created by its most active and opinion-forming citizens.
The members of intelligentsia were the ones who governed the city, represented
its citizens on the outside , took on initiatives aiming at raising the standard of
living in the city
—
they were the most creative tissue of the local community.
The aim of this dissertation is to present the inter-war local intelligentsia as
a social and professional stratum, who earned their living doing intellectual work,
and to reconstruct the most characteristic processes occurring within this stratum.
In my book I focus more on the so-called intellectual elite rather than on the more
average members of the local intelligentsia. The reason for this is the specificity
of the available sources, which were produced predominantly by the intellectual
leaders
-
the sources that would preserve the traces of more average representatives
are considerably fewer. I would like to emphasise though that the collective hero
of this dissertation is the intelligentsia in
Przemyśl
of the inter-war period
-
all the
intellectuals who lived and worked in the city at that time. The criterion for being
ascribed to this stratum was the number of years a person had been the resident of
the city (the usual
5
-year period) as well as the intensity and excellence of their
presence in the city. What do I mean by these quite enigmatic concepts? First of
all, we have to acknowledge the fact that some of the teachers, clerks and judges
resided in
Przemyśl
for less than five years, but their engagement in public life
was so tremendous that they excelled in the local community. Overlooking their
contributions and not mentioning them in this dissertation would be

a grave mistake. The more so that the intelligentsia in
Przemyśl
were not a large community. What is more, thanks to its non-anonymity the
individuals co-establishing it had a considerable and visible influence on the
political, economic, cultural and social situation of the city.
The book consists of nine chapters and the subject matter is organised into two
main parts. In the first part I describe the analysed group in comparison with the
development of the city in the second half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th
centuries and I discuss the first cases of public involvement in the urban life on
the part of the local intellectuals. In the second part I present five individual studies
devoted to selected research issues which may serve as examples of less
conventional approach to the subject. I believe that the current approach established
by numerous publications concerning this social stratum is insufficient if one wants
to analyse the so-called borderland intelligentsia , which requires a broader and
more interdisciplinary perspective.
In the first chapter {The beginnings of urban and cultural development in
Przemyśl)
I present the most important factors in the development of the city
during the period of Galician autonomy and in the inter-war period. In this way I
wanted to account for the uniqueness of
Przemyśl
and explain why so many
intellectuals were drawn to this Galician city and wanted to settle down here. On
the other hand, the lack of many public facilities (such as a university) resulted in
the fact that the opinions about the city were divided
—
it was perceived as having
great aspirations but also as being a bit provincial.
In the second chapter {The number and social background of the local
intelligentsia) I make use of quantitative research in an attempt to estimate the
number of intellectuals living in
Przemyśl
at the time and to determine their social
and ethnic background. These findings are crucial if one wants to understand the
specificity of this social stratum.
Due to the numerous recruitment sources the city developed a strong and well-
educated socio-economic stratum. Its intellectual elite, whose members were often
recruited from the immigrant population, made numerous attempts at establishing
in
Przemyśl
a branch of the Faculty of Law of the Lviv University. They publicly
emphasised the necessity of establishing a Ukrainian university
—
if not in Lviv,
then in
Przemyśl.
I discuss all these issues in chapter three {The education of the
local intelligentsia), where I analyse the elementary and secondary education
received by the local intellectuals in
Przemyśl.
In an attempt to extend the scope
of the discussed issue I also focus on the education of female representatives of
the intelligentsia and the self-improvement and self-education of the members of
the intellectual elite as well as on explaining the phenomenon of people who could
not formally belong to the intelligentsia (due to their insufficient education) and
yet were classified as intellectuals by their contemporaries.
Chapters four and five include the presentation and analysis of contributions
made by the local intellectuals in various fields
—
political, social, cultural and

scientific. Taking into consideration that
Przemyśl
was not an academic centre
and that its population was quite small, the accomplishments of the local
intelligentsia were more than impressive. Far-reaching connections and a variety
of initiatives, often modelled after the innovative ideas originating in
Kraków
or
Lviv, prove that the intelligentsia in
Przemyśl
had great aspirations and strove
hard to fulfil them.
Chapter six (Local intelligentsia and their attitude to religion) is the first to be
classified as unconventional in the way it depicts the history of the intelligentsia
in Polish historiography. In my opinion every study concerning the borderland
population and focusing on the period when religion was an important element in
every community, is doomed to be incomplete.
The emancipation of female intellectuals is not something that is often discussed
in classic monographs dealing with the history of the Polish intelligentsia. Yet the
turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and the period of the Second Polish Republic
were the times when women
—
predominantly from the intellectual background
—
played an important role in public life.
Przemyśl
was no exception. In my
dissertation I focused on two different views concerning femininity and the role
women should play in society
—
the traditional view (mother in a family, mother
of a nation) and the liberal view (partner, activist).
Although it is a very rich and interesting area of study, I decided to include and
discuss only a few elements of the everyday life of the local intelligentsia in
Przemyśl.
I chose the ones which seemed the most significant: marriage, living
conditions, clothing, family relations, family celebrations, funerals, banquets,
receptions, balls, strolls, theatre, cinema, sports and holidays. To avoid unnecessary
repetitions I purposefully passed over the issues that appeared earlier in the book.
Chapters eight (The ethos of the intelligentsia) and nine (Together or apart?
The relations within the stratum) are the key parts of the book and provide an
answer to the question to what extent the local intelligentsia in
Przemyśl
was
a scientific construct and to what extent it was a tightly-knit social and professional
stratum. I believe that any inquiries about the borderland intelligentsia are futile if
one does not study the common values, aims and norms that functioned within
this group. It is worth mentioning that even though the members of the intelligentsia
in
Przemyśl
were not a homogenous group in terms of religious beliefs and ethnic
background, they constituted a self-contained whole. Their business objectives
and intellectual mission, their feeling of being chosen, their sense of being cultured
entities and their everyday dealings were often more important than ethnic divisions
and political conflicts (at least for some time). Bringing this relation to the fore is
the main achievement of this book.
The issues discussed in the nine chapters allow us to answer the question
included in the title of the book

whether the local intelligentsia in
Przemyśl
were a spark of light or a smouldering torch?
