GREEN S FUNCTIONS FOR SOLID STATE PHYSICISTS
A Reprint Volume with Additional Material on the Physics of Correlated Election Systems
Green s functions for Solid State Physicists has helped introduce several generations of
condensed matter physics graduate students to the very powerful ideas of quantum many body
theory and
sume
of their applications, particularly those in the physics of itinerant magnetism
and superconductivity. It is pedagogical in philosophy, and is based on the idea of leading the
reader to understanding sophisticated formalism through the study of simple examples which
demónstrale
the formal points. In the reprint edition, two new chapters have been added to the
original text to provide an introduction to the recent developments in the physics of correlated
electron systems and. in particular, of high

superconductivity.
Sebastian
Doniach
is a Professor of Applied Physics and Physics at Stanford University. He
was founding Director of the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory from
1973
to
1978.
He received the B. A. degree in Mathematics from Christ s College. Cambridge. England, and
the Ph. D. in Theoretical Physics from Liverpool University. He has published extensively in
theoretical condensed matter physics and more recently in experimental and theoretical biophysics.
Ernst Sondheimer was born in Stuttgart. Germany, and has lived in England since
1936.
He
studied physics at the University of Cambridge and started research after World War II under
A. H. Wilson. In
1948
he was elected to a Research Fellowship at Trinity College. Cambridge,
and since
1951
he has been teaching in the University of London. He was Head of the Department
of Mathematics at Westfield College. University of London and is now Professor (Emeritus).
Professor Sondheimer has held
v
¡siting appointments at the Univ ersitv of Bristol, the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, the University of Illinois, and the University of Cologne. He has published
a number of research papers on the electrical and magnetic properties of metals
