Croatia), his native town, in this book.

Pula
contains some of his previously and more recently written texts. De¬
spite the fact that he has not been living there for more than half of his life, liv¬
ing so close and yet so far away , he has been closely-related to
Pula
through
his childhood, growing up and adolescence, his closest relatives, lots of friends,
some loves, many citizens that are still alive or already passed away.
He is particularly linked to his native town due to the years marked with
strong cultural activities considering youth journalism changes in the late
1970s
when he, together with his colleagues and friends, real fellow-fighters,
pressured by communist authorities and journalistic hacks, was accused and
condemned because of his texts in Ibor , the Istrian youth journal which
was the official bulletin of the Literary Club called
Istarski borac
(1953-
-1980) -
the oldest meeting place of that kind among young creative people
in Croatia and Yugoslavia of the period.
Of course, this book reveals some sentimental and strong emotional char¬
acter but also a bit documentary and even polemical purpose. It is divided

Pula,
with some texts even presenting the author s principal vision and sug¬
gesting certain solutions to make this 3000-year-old city on the Adriatic
coast, the biggest in
Istria
and one of the biggest in Croatia, shine and get
cleared from, as the author claims, all sorts of fog and bureaucratic dema¬
gogy, aggressive ruralisation which is destroying one significant urbanity, to
disburden it from the layers of politically and strategically wrong judgments
and the wrong practices of many people who have been in charge of
Pula
for
the last decades. Also, the ones who have been in charge of it. What they
have achieved is even evident in the need for such a book.
The book is certainly very subjective and does not offer any ready-made
solutions but describes, warns, suggests, motivates... It is not self-contained
in terms of campanilism but, on the contrary, it encourages the freedom of
being open-minded and ready for changes, the necessity of ensuring some
different coexistence of the urban entity phenomenon, i.e.
polis
-
within the
native land and region, country, and wider open spaces in the world.
The intimate and subjective character of the book is undoubtedly con¬
tributed by some selected verses by the poet B. D.
Biletić,
the ones inspired
by
Pula,
and the photographs of the author s ancestors, family members,
friends... The citizens of
Pula par
excellence.
