The
1930s
was an intense, restless decode
of experimentation, expansion
-
and despair,
[f was a rime of dream palace cinemas, and
fteapifs too, of crazes for dance halls, football
poofs, greyhound-racing, mass rambles and
lidos that served a cult of fitness and an
obsession with fresh air.
Throughout the decade there were near-annual
hunger marches that strove to draw the nation s
attention
io
the
biffer
plight of the unemployed;
yet there was also an unprecedented housing
boom, with the dream of a home in the suburbs
and a Baby Austin in the garage suddenly
attainable for many, their furniture bought
on the never-never .
The urge towards modernism was manifest
in
brutálist
architecture.
Art
Deco
design,
Surrealist art, swing music and a passion for
speed. Edward Vffi abdicated his throne as
the divorce laws became less hypocritical, birth
control more acceptable, paid holidays more
widespread and fashion ever more glamorous
and affordable.
The thirties witnessed the rise of
fascism
and
communism, the crisis of capitalism and its
renewal, wavering pacifism and growing fears
of war as the Italian invasion of Abyssinia, the
Spanish Civil War and the ambitions of Hitler
concentrated minds, whiie both the USSR s
