Montferrand attended the Romi Prize competition from 1807 to 1814. As one of Charles Percier s apprentices, hi practised on the building site of St. Madeleine Church with Vignon and at the Civj Buildings Service with Molinos. Марсово поле, где проходили лошадиные бега, в которых вместе с военным участвовали и штатские. Он датирован 1814 годом. It shows the Field of Mars, when horse-races took place, attended by both civilians and military men. It is dated from 1814, when Alexander 1st and his allies occupied Paris, what explains the presence of a particular character on the drawing. That is also the unique signed and dated non etched drawing by Montferrand before his departure towards Russia. Betancourt and Montferrand : the story of a co-operation Irina Gouzévitch The article deals with the uncommon co-operation in Russia between the Spanish engineer Augustin Betancourt, who was a higher civil servant who worked for the Crown, and the young French drawer Auguste Montferrand, who came to St. Petersburg with the hope to take up a career. This co-operation, which only lasted eighlj years and involved a wide professional sociability, did not only promote Montferrand to the rank of the great actors of architecture but also enabled the creation of true masterpieces which deeply marked the urban landscape of the capital of the empire.! La brève description des blocs de documents déjà étudiés et l analyse de la structure des collections mentionnées présentent les types des documents qui sont conservés par les RGIA et peuvent déterminer les orientations des futures recherches sur l œuvre de cet architecte. The architect Auguste Montferrand - the inventor of St. Isaac s Cathedral ______________________________ Alexandre Kviatkovski The Historical Russian National Archives (RGIA) in St. Petersburg preserve documents coming from the companies which were in charge of the building of St. Isaac s Cathedral and other works whose plans and building operations were placed under A. Montferrand s responsibility, since he was the official architect of the imperial court. A large part of the documents about A. de Montferrand s works are preserved in these collections. The short description of the documents already studied and the analysis of the composition of these collections give the types of documents which are preserved by the RGIA and enable to determine the future axes of research on this architect s work. His success provoked jealousy and rancour but, in the general mind, people admitted that he was part of Russian history. Il s est fait une gloire de rappeler ces événements au travers de monuments divers, parfois inattendus. Il n est fait mention ici que de certaines colonnes au sens strict (elles sont nombreuses !), mais les obélisques et autres clochers d église, beffrois, tours gratte-ciel participent du même esprit : le témoignage de l orgueil humain dans brièveté de son passage terrestre. From the end of the Prehistoric Times and the Bronze Age, human beings need to affirm their primacy, wealth, everlastingness, existence, through life and death. They gloried in the remind of these events through diverse monuments, sometimes unexpected ones. Some columns only, in the strict sense of the name, are studied (they are so numerous !) but obelisks and other church towers, belfries, towers and sky¬ scrapers participate in the same spirit : they testify of the human arrogance in the brevity of his life on Earth. Les travaux pour la colonne d Alexandre dans les albums d Auguste de Montferrand et d Antonio Adamini _____________________________227 Nicola Navone L extraction, le déplacement et l érection du monolithe destiné à la colonne d Alexandre ont constitué un exploit technique décrit d une part par Montferrand dans l ouvrage publié en 1836 et, d autre part par Antonio Adamini dans un album de dessins daté de 1835 conservé à la bibliothèque de l Université des Voies de Communication de St Pétersbourg. Chargé de seconder Montferrand, Adamini a consacré 40 planches au chantier de la Colonne d Alexandre 1er montrant dans le détail le fonctionnement des machines et l enchaînement des opérations. He shows the works he achieved and explains everything with high precision, with a lot of teaching qualities. As an erudite interested in everything, a highly cultured man and an aesthete, his ambition was to write books illustrated with great care. In his published works, he shows interest, from a sociologie point of view, in the world of the workers and more generally in all the actors of the building site. About his two main working sites, St. Isaac s Cathedral and the Alexander Column, Montferrand was not satisfied with drawing plans, sections, elevations and isometric projections but, what was new in books about architecture, used to draw scenes from the working sites in a very busy time, with workers, specialized workers, craftsmen, soldiers and bystanders, from the simple idler to the high society representatives. He wanted his works to be known beyond the Russian boundaries and among his equals and desired a lot to be immortalized. Montferrand et Mauduit : un conflit salutaire _________297 Dmitri Gouzévitch Lorsque, en 1818, Montferrand fut chargé de la direction du chantier de la cathédrale de Saint-Isaac d après son propre projet, il ne possédait pas encore l expérience requise en matière d art de construction. Mauduit fut le premier à attirer l attention sur les défaillances graves relatives, notamment, au sujet de l appui de la coupole qui devait aboutir à l écroulement de cette dernière. Cette critique donna suite à la création d une commission spéciale chargée de l enquête et de l amélioration du projet. This piece of critic was followed by the creation of a special committee in charge of the inquiry and of the improvement of the project. L étude a été réalisée sur une des œuvres les plus importantes de l architecte : la cathédrale St Isaac. Traiter l édifice dans son ensemble aurait été une tâche trop ambitieuse, aussi l étude a été restreinte à deux éléments majeurs de la cathédrale, un « grand » portique (Nord ou Sud) et la coupole. Par la suite, l analyse des plans de l architecte, la compréhension des démarches employées à l époque ont permis d appréhender les choix de construction et les solutions de dimensionnement. В качестве объекта исследования был выбран Исаакиевский собор, который является одним из крупнейших произведений архитектуры. Изучение всего архитектурного сооружения могло бы показаться слишком амбициозной задачей, поэтому это исследование ограничивается изучением двух основных частей собора: главного (северного или южного) портика и купола. Последующее рассмотрение чертежей архитектора и предпринятых в то время мероприятий позволило понять выбор конструкции и пропорций. В результате расчётов с помощью современных методов (метод сопротивлении материалов и цифровой метод применительно к спроектированной на компьютере модели) мы получили возможность смонтировать составные части конструкции. Затем оставалось сравнить результаты, полученные различными методами. Необходимо отметить высокий технический уровень того времени и важную роль человеческого фактора в сравнении с современными методами труда. The study was done on one of the architect s main works : St. Isaac s Cathedral. The study of the whole edifice would have been to ambitious, so the study was restricted to two main elements of the cathedral, a big portico (north or south) and the dome. Then, the analysis of the architect s plans and the understanding of the proceedings used at the time enabled us to apprehend the choices taken during the construction and the solutions found about the size. Then, possibilities of creation are put into place. with the help of currently calculation methods (the method of resistance of the materials and the digital method applied on the pattern of the structure on a computer). Then, we had to compare the results obtained by the different methods Of course the tools are nowadays more efficient, but we must lay stress on the importance of the technical means displayed at the time. It is essentially composed of plans, drawings and water-coloured paintings that the tsar Alexander II bought to M. Feiten, a shopkeeper specialized in antiquities, in order to offer to the Academy. The aspect of the unique case and the importance of this collection come from that it comes from Montferrand personal archives and that it reflects all the main stages of his career and presents at the same time the most diverse aspects of his talent.
