Resume
Six years ago Ebart Media documentation compiled material and created the first digital
archive of newspapers' articles about
Zoran Djindjic.
The archive covered the period from
January
2001
until March
12,2003.
The work on this archive and the analyses of the material led
to controversies in the media. These were mainly commentaries expressing concern that the
project could be used for harassing journalists and the media that had been critical of
Zoran
Djindjic.
We have completed the archive, and did a quantitative content analysis of the article
evaluation (positive, negative or neutral), topics, news genres, media outlets. After that, the
public discussion stopped.
The quantitative analysis has shown that out of
3,259
collected articles, there were only
10.74 %
with the negative connotation. Most of them were neutral
- 2,823
texts
(86.62%).
The
smallest number had a positive connotation
-
less than three percent.
This was not an analysis of all the articles published about
Zoran Djindjic.
The archive
included only articles from the most significant dailies and weeklies, and those with the highest
circulation. We left out
Identitet,
Svedok,
Dan,
Srpska
Rec,
Ekspres,
and other broadcasting and
online media. Had material from all these media been included, the ratio of negatively nuanced
media coverage would have risen dramatically. However, not only the proportion of numbers
matters in this case. In concluding remarks to the text of the analysis, I wrote at the time that the
lack of support was the biggest problem in relations between
Zoran Djindjic
and Serbian public,
and not the morphology and the number of media attacks.
Qualitative content analysis of the texts with negative connotation about
Zoran Djindjic
and his Government, along with previously published essay "The Noise of Lies", are and
attempt to stimulate a serious debate about the role and power of the media in Serbia in the social

and political transition of Serbia. This question has long-lasting importance for the course that
Serbia and its society will take in the future. The path towards European integration and the
development of rale of law outweighing nationalistic and conservative forces depend largely
part on the position and the influence of the media. The book "Chivies" addresses problems that
are not only professional, but which could be best solved through professional conduct and
respecting media ethics. It seems, however, that in Serbia even this falls into the domain of
political issues.
