have graced our gardens for hundreds of
years, but since the
1980s
the popularity of
these ferny leaved, curiously flowered plants
has surged. Despite this new interest, fueled
by dozens of exciting new introductions,
especially from Asia, little has been written
about the cultivated members of the family
until now.

all the cultivated species, hybrids, and culti-
vars of Corydalis,
Dicentra,
and allied genera
in the bleeding heart family. Written by
three international experts and published in
association with Brooklyn Botanic Garden,

ful keys to the genera and species that allow
for accurate identification of plants, and prac¬
tical tips to successfully grow and use the
plants in the landscape. Additional chapters
cover the cultural history, cultivation, natu¬
ral history, and distribution of the species,
while a helpful glossary clarifies botanical
terms. Fifty elegant line drawings and

vivid photographs highlight the range of
brilliant colors and shapes of these shade-
loving jewels.
The authors formidable expertise and
knowledge of the plants in the wild and in
cultivation make this a must-read for anyone

Mark Tebbitt (center) teaches at California
University of Pennsylvania and has studied
all the North American species in the bleed¬
ing heart family. Formerly a botanist at Brook¬
lyn Botanic Garden, he earned a PhD in plant
systematics from the University of Glasgow
and is author

Magnus has a PhD
in plant systematics from the University of

species in the bleeding heart family.

ditions that resulted in the introduction of
several Corydalis species.
