Summary
The Foreign Policy of King Wenceslas II in
1283-1300
In the introductory parts of the submitted work I aimed at analysing
the figure of King Wenceslas II in the narrative strategy of the
Zbraslav
chroniclers in two main aspects. The first presents Wenceslas as the holy
founder of the
Zbraslav
monastery
(Aula Regia),
the second as an ideal
ruler of the Christian West. Research in this field reveals that the image
of Wenceslas II as portrayed in the
Zbraslav
chronicle was intended to
give evidence of remarkable and almost holy deeds of the Bohemian king.
With some caution one can suppose that the attempts by Otto of Thurin-
gia to draw up Wenceslas s life story in this way was motivated by the visi¬
on of starting the canonization process. Although this did not happen, the
role of Wenceslas II in the historical memory of the
Zbraslav
monastery
may be compared to the role of numerous saint founders. Without any
doubt the portrayal of Wenceslas II as given by the
Zbraslav
Cistercians
was highly idealized also in the description of his ruling skills and the tools
that the „holy king used for attaining his political and military goals. It
means that any subsequent reflections of historical science on the person
and reign of this ruler should be based on questions repeatedly asked to
this voluminous narrative source, which the
Zbraslav
chronicle indubi¬
tably is, critical analysis of king s various positions within this work, and
comparison with other narrative, diplomatic and economic sources.
The second aspect of the figure of Wenceslas II in the narrative stra¬
tegy of the
Zbraslav
Cistercians concerns his idealized statesman activi¬
ties. A virtuous, justly and patiently judging king, pious and peacemaking,
yet uncompromising against forces of chaos
—
that is the ideal ruler of
the
Zbraslav
chronicle. In the understanding of the
Zbraslav
chroniclers
all those prerequisites form a conception of statehood primarily based on
building of order and its maintenance. The order is ideal as long as it is
represented and executed by an ideal ruler. Thus the
Zbraslav
chronicle is
revealed in a different light.
On the basis of the summarized results I began to research the fo¬
reign policy of Wenceslas II from
1283
to
1300.
The necessity to detect
roots of the later expansive policy of the penultimate Premyslid brought
me to the first years of his reign. According to the literary tradition kin¬
g s activities were allegedly controlled by
Závis
of
Falkenstein,
the lover
and subsequently husband of Queen
Kunigunda.
I conclude that the only
direct source allowing to consider possible claims of Wenceslas II to the

lands of the Babenberg heritage before
1291
remains the letter of Wen-
ceslas to Arnold, Bishop of
Bamberg,
of 17th March
1287.
Its content
suggests that Wenceslas attempted to lay claim to Carinthia. However, the
way this source is extant requires caution. Besides, a certain right of Wen¬
ceslas II to part of the Austrian duchy is mentioned also in the
Zbraslav
chronicle, with regard to Guta s dowry. Relevant sources divulge nothing
about far-reaching expansive concepts of king s stepfather
Závis
of Fal-
kenstein within the Czech foreign policy in
1283-1288,
although this has
been a widespread opinion in the literature as yet. As far as foreign affairs
of that period are concerned, the main theme was an endeavour to balan¬
ce relationships between young Wenceslas and the Roman King Rudolf
and his sons.
In the following chapter I try to reassess the beginnings of the ex¬
pansion of Wenceslas II to southern Poland. In this issue again it was
necessary to cope with existing diversity in evaluation of this period of
Czech-Polish history. Even though one can not assert that foreign policy
of Wenceslas II in
1289—1300
was exclusively aimed at gaining regions
in Lesser Poland, the expansion of Bohemian king s power to southern
Poland became an integral part of all mutually intervowen diplomatic and
military activities supporting king s power within the framework of Cent¬
ral Europe. In this light one should regard the Polish royal coronation of
Wenceslas II in
1300
as a logical result of Czech diplomacy that strove to
strenghten its position in southern Poland as well as in relation to other
Polish regions throughout the 1290s. The acquistion of Krakow and
San¬
domierz
duchies became one of the first and most essential steps on the
way to a personal union between the Czech and Polish Kingdom, which
was accomplished in
1300.
Before the very analysis of the acquisition of the Polish Crown I at¬
tempted to propose a new assessment of diplomatic attitudes of Wence¬
slas II towards the Empire in
1291-1298
(e.g. from the death of Rudolf
I to
1298,
when
Albrecht,
a son of Rudolf, ascended the throne of the
Empire after his succesful struggle against Adolf of Nassau, who was
elected in
1292)
and specify the extent, to which the Bohemian king inter¬
fered into the struggle for the throne of the Empire. At this point more
than ever Wenceslas can be characterized as a skillful politician surroun¬
ded by capable advisors in the field of affairs related to the Empire. There
was a close interconnection between interests of the Bohemian king and
interests of the archbishop of Mainz, margraves of Brandenburg and du¬
kes of Saxony, each of them pragmatically pursuing specific goals that had
to be inavoidably taken into account by
Albrecht
of
Habsburg
and Adolf
of Nassau, rival pretenders to the throne, on their way towards the crown.

It is symptomatic that all the aforementioned figures turned away from
the
Habsburg
policy in the Empire several times in
1291-1299.
The role
of the Bohemian king within the election of the Roman ruler seems to be
crucial at that time.
In the next chapter I returned to the foreign policy of Wenceslas II
and dealt with the events in
1300,
when Wenceslas was crowned Polish
king in
Gniezno.
Here again the research had to be based on a new analy¬
sis of sources, by means of which
і
attempted to rethink existing opinions
on the date and course of the coronation. Thanks to this fact my work
offers a new view of the
Gniezno
coronation of the penultimate Premys-
lid king Wenceslas II. I regard the coronation act in the
Gniezno
cathedral
as one of the supreme moments of foreign policy of the last Premyslids.
By virtue of the analysis of sources one can identify those Greater Po¬
land nobles that were behind the invitation of Wenceslas II in
1300.
On
the basis of primary sources and conclusions of Polish historiography
(particularly
Janusz Bieniak)
it appears that the date of the coronation
traditionally supposed in the Czech historical science
—
the turn of August
and September
-
must be shifted to the period between
1
9th October and
26th November
1300.
The depiction of the coronation itself as a hastily
arranged and gloomy event devoid of merry-making and splendid royal
pageantry seems implausible. One of the conclusions of this part of the
work is the view that Wenceslas II perceived his Polish royal title as con¬
nected to the whole of Poland, not only to the
Kalisz
and
Gniezno
regi¬
ons, as the older Polish literature wished to have it.
This chapter is supplemented with the text in which I made an at¬
tempt to summarize the testimony of the sources and existing literature
on the ways and ruling structures of Wenceslas II on the Polish territo¬
ry. It is apparent that for the first time in history Czech diplomacy used
pan-Slavic rhetoric deprecating everything German. On the borderline
between creating an idealized image of royal power and its practical con¬
sequences in real political life there is the institution of feudal subservi¬
ence, consistently used by the Prague court for integration of Silasian and
later some Kuyavian Piasts into the emerging union. The key link between
the Bohemian and Polish Kingdom was the figure of the monarch. Still,
political life remained essentialy unchanged. Nevertheless, clear rules were
introduced, put through by royal officers, responsible only to the king,
who presided over tribunals, confirmed transfers of property, made peace
as heads of garrisons and protected the territory against foreign invasions.
The officers of the Prague royal court had no power in Poland.
To conclude, the submitted doctoral thesis summarizes conditions,
foundations and possibilities of one of key periods of power expansion

of the Czech Premyslid state at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries.
Thus this work proposes possible interpretations of roots and points of
departure of the subsequent development of Bohemia and Moravia under
the Luxembourg dynasty, whose members openly adopted the heritage of
the last Premyslids.
