SUMMARY
The book
Šavnik
Forgotten is a story of a past time and the
Durmitor
area, in
the center of which is the town of
Šavnik,
a trade and administrative center,
spread out at the meeting point of three rivers crossed by ancient stone bridges, at
the place where once there used to be village mills and big willow groves
-
which
gave the town its name. The story is about the people who came to this place from
far and wide and, owing to their professions, hard work and dedication, created a
new and different settlement from those in the surrounding. Since everything has
been covered by a veil of oblivion, different literature (books, magazines, newspa¬
pers) had to be looked up, after which there ensued a search of archive documents,
photographs, written memories and other material on
Šavnik s
past. In this way
light has been shed on many persons and events from the first eight decades of
Šavnik s
existence
(1861-1941).
Not a single distinguished foreigner (B.Boucek, P. Rovinski, B.
Schwarz,
К.
Hassert,
L. Kuba)
visiting Montenegro after the international recognition of its
borders
1859-1860
by-passed
Šavnik,
which was on the route to everyone; it had
government institutions and also caravanserais, inns, shops and craft-shops sprung
up, for the needs of both the local population and travelers. And all the foreigners
admired the unusual position and appearance of the small town, which acquired
more and more urban features and new institutions (school, church, library, army
headquarters etc). Therefore, the descriptions of foreign travel writers were cru¬
cial in the reconstruction of
Šavnik s
appearance of that time.
The founder of
Šavnik
and the main hero of this story
-
Luka Đurović,
as a
youth of an unruly nature, arrived, almost by chance, at the place where there were
village mills on the
Šavnik
River at the end of the 1850s. He was the first to build
a house there and for the next six decades he was a marker in the life of the town
as a scribe, priest, teacher, politician, mystic, speaker, informer and lay-about. At
the same time, this is also a story of the families (mostly settlers from far-away
areas), which gave an important contribution to the establishment of handicrafts,
trade and other services. This is a narration of the origins and rise of the middle-
class, which strived towards economic prosperity, education and cultural up lifting
of every kind, but also towards civic and political freethinking. This new elite was
always present in the Montenegrin capital of Cetinje, it also reached Belgrade, and
more and more youths left for higher education in Russia or in search of better
earnings to America.
The book also contains numerous documents which speak of the development
of institutions and the political life up until World War I. Within this frame, there
are vivid descriptions of the tragic fates of prominent individuals who, by their civic
courage and political vision, secured
Šavnik
the symbolic nickname of Small Paris
of Drobnjak . The battles of the Montenegrin army and dramatic events in the
Balkan Wars and World War I are described primarily through the destinies of the
soldiers and officers from the units from this area. In
1918,
when the whole of
Montenegro voted in favour of a union with Serbia at a plebiscite, the Podgorica
Parliament had a no small role to play in this story, since there were nowhere more
spokesmen of Unification as in the
Durmitor
area.
The inter-war period in the life of
Šavnik
and the vicinity is shown through two
time periods: the period of
1919-1928,
when this society joins the life of the new
state,
and the
1929-1941
period, when great political and social turmoil occurs in
the entire country. Within the first period there is an overall account of the dynam¬
ic social life in
Šavnik,
which was the seat of district institutions, and in the fore¬
ground are party alignments and political struggles in the
Šavnik
district. Focus is
also directed at figures that, in this period, gave the tone and charm to the town
atmosphere of
Šavnik:

The book is accompanied by a variety of carefully selected photographs of per¬
sons who marked the eight decades of
Šavnik
town. Some rare panoramic draw¬
ings and photographs of the town in the first decade of its existence are also shown.
There are various documents as well, which are now published for the first time
and in their own way illustrate the economic and social life of the enterprising cit¬
izens of this town. A light and unostentatious narration, rich in anecdotes from
Šavnik s
past and the past of the
Durmitor
area, makes the book popular even for
the widest circle of readers. Those who have the most interest
-
either by birth or
originally from this area
-
will recognize in the presented material family roots or
at least some important episode from their family s past.
The book Savnik Forgotten recognizes a time which has fallen into oblivion,
but also gives hope and food for thought on the future of this small town. It is also
a call for a return to roots to all those to whom
Šavnik
belongs in some way or
another, and of these there are quite a few.
