Hugh Trevor-Roper s life is a rich subject for a biog¬
raphy
—
with elements of Greek tragedy and moments
of high farce. Clever, witty and sophisticated, Trevor-
Roper was one of the most
gifted
scholars of his
generation. He moved easily between Oxford and
London, between aristocratic great houses and the
more humble haunts of literary Bohemia. While still
a young man he made his name with The Last Days of
Hitler. He developed a lucid prose style which he used
to deadly effect, becoming notorious for his acerbic
attacks on other historians.
In his prime, Trevor-Roper seemed to have every¬
thing: a grey
Bentley, a
prestigious chair at Oxford,
a beautiful country house, a wife with a title, and,
eventually, a title of his own. But he failed to write
the big book expected of him, and tainted his
own reputation when in old age he erroneously
authenticated the forged Hitler Diaries . In this major
new biography, Adam
Sisman
makes use of previously
unseen sources to investigate the puzzle of how a man
so disdainful of sloppiness in others could have been
so careless himself.
Trevor-Roper s interests were extraordinarily wide:
his life intersected with such diverse individuals as
George Orwell and Margaret Thatcher, Albert
Speer
and Kim Philby, Katharine Hepburn and Rupert
Murdoch. From wartime code-breaking to grilling
Nazis while the trail was still fresh in
1945
(and
finding Hitlers will buried inside a bottle), from his
feud with Evelyn Waugh to his secret and passionate
affair with an older, married woman, this is the story
of a full and varied life. The tragicomedy of Trevor-
Roper s tenure as Master of Peterhouse provides an
entertaining finale to a career packed with incident.

SISMAN
is the author of three previous
biographies, all very well received by the critics.
His first book, published in
1994,
was a life of
Trevor-Roper s colleague and rival, A.J.P. Taylor,
lauded by the late Roy Jenkins as one of the most
succinct, complete and satisfying biographies I have
read for a long time . Sisman s Boswell s Presumptuous
Task, which appeared in
1999,
was praised as
extraordinarily gripping and wonderfully vivid by
Richard Holmes, and as fabulously entertaining,
deft and witty by Philip Hensher; it was shortlisted
for various prizes, including the Whitbread, and
won the Biography Prize awarded by the American
National Books Critics Circle. In
2006
Sisman
published a much-admired study of the friendship
between Wordsworth and Coleridge, described by
Diana Athill as unputdownable .
