Transformations
of iconosphere.
The visual context of theatre
Summary
Since the first declarations of autonomous theatre in the early 20th century, theatre liberated
from literature, and this caused significant changes in the theatrical arts. Numerous alternative
theatres have sprung up and so has visual theatre . This type of theatre was known for a long time,
but today it has become independent and is one of the important branches of the theatre. However,
the present book will not be devoted to visual theatre. The author intends to examine the visual
context of theatre over the centuries. In some periods it was almost identical to stage images, in
others
-
it differed substantially from them.
When analysing these issues, the author draws on the work of theoreticians of art and experts
in the field such as
Mieczysław Porębski
or the philosopher Edgar Morin. They help him to present
the history of iconosphere in a systematic manner. The book discusses the iconic fashions in various
periods in the history of culture. It is not, however, about the whole sphere of iconicity, but about
those of its components that contained narrative elements. This is where we can see their links to
various theatrical performances. We thus have an array of religious and utilitarian objects covered
by figurative ornaments that were parts of certain narratives. They are ancient jewel cases, triumphal
arches, columns, altars and even, in later periods, embroidered fabrics. Obviously, they could not
replace theatre, but they did function as visual transmitters of narratives.
The Greek and Roman approaches differed significantly from that of the followers of new re¬
ligions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam), who were against artificial representations of God. The
Christian Europe was riven by conflict over this issue for several centuries. Towards the end of the
8th century, the advocates of icons won and thus began a period during which visual representations
were used for evangelisation-related purposes. Not only did the Church introduce sculptures and
images into its places of worship, but it also used in its liturgy artificial movable figures, which had
existed in the Church longer than mystery plays. Christian iconography spread all over Europe; it
was present both inside and outside churches, and in a number of processions featuring popular
objects of faith. The lay rulers, emperors, kings and princes, followed in the Church s footsteps and
would organise their own celebrations, in which religious symbols would be mixed with dynastic
ones. This was the case of ceremonial entries into cities and various court celebrations during which
artificial figures confirmed God s favourable inclination towards the ruling family.
Renaissance further encouraged both the Church and the courts to develop theatre and ceremo¬
nies that celebrated some dynastic events or achieved specific political purposes. New theatre halls
were created for various courts; they were noteworthy thanks to their technical facilities and to new
iconography that drew on antiquity and mythology as well. The court performances were to provide
entertainment, though they were not free from political allusions
-
examples of these can be found

in 17th century court masques in England, or in operas performed at the court of
Władysław
IV, the
king of Poland.
The increasing size and influence of the third estate in the IS* century made ancient allegories
give way to scenes from real life; court performances were becoming a political anachronism. New
sources of iconosphere were becoming popular. They included such types of popular entertainment
as visual theatre in the form of Servandoni s and Loutherbourg s works, first optical experiments
with panoramas and dioramas, and performances of the so-called Olympian circus that tackled
topics related to current events and fantasy. Realism and a dose of democracy found their way on to
theatrical stages (Prince George s theatre in
Meiningen),
but they could also be found in mime
theatre or in variety theatre, where Charlie Chaplin paved the way for great film comedy.
Such social events as the French Revolution or the October Revolution in Russia had a huge
influence on popular symbolism and iconography. However, modernism was on its way; it protested
against bourgeois culture and proposed both new form of visual expression
-
taking into account
technical developments that led to an apotheosis of machines, as well as autonomy of colours and
sounds
-
and new theatrical forms such as visual theatre and theatre of robots.
The number of images and their recipients was on the increase too. So was the number of those
who owned the images. The visual themes of performances were no longer chosen only by the
Church and the emperor; they were also chosen by representatives of various groups: social and
private sponsors, as well as the artists themselves. Their works were not closed because the persons
who commissioned them wished so; they were open and could be interpreted in a variety of ways.
The market of visual works is now growing rapidly. The viewers may feel lost if they have not
learned how to analyse and judge the works of art put before them. Yet it is the viewers that decide
the fate of art. They make the choice.
