Flint
material
obtained during excavations of barrows
of the Corded Ware culture on the Sokal Hills
Summary
In the course of excavations of
30
barrows there
were explored
120
features
-
grave pits and settle¬
ment structures. Flint artifacts were found in
40
fe¬
atures, among them burials of the Corded Ware cul¬
ture (CWC), of the Mierzanowice culture, and the
Funnel Beaker culture. Artifacts of siliceous rocks
were also discovered in mounds damaged by plo¬
wing (regarded as cultural layers) and in fills of two
settlement structures (Table
1).
CWC graves represent three developing phases:
Early (Category A)
-
linked with central burials
(12
assemblages), „Classic" (Category B)
-
related to
the Cracow-Sandomierz group
(5
assemblages), and
Late (Categories C, D, E, F)
-
the so-called Sokal
group which shows certain links with the Middle
Dnieper culture
(9
assemblages). In total, they acco¬
unt to
26
funeral assemblages.
Graves of Category A are represented by
12
as¬
semblages which contained together
42
flint artifacts.
They include the following tool forms: arrowhead,
axes, blades with marginal retouch, retouched bla¬
des, a para-backed insert
(?),
a striker, a burin, and
common knapping products: flakes, blades, and one
laminar flake
(cf.
Table
2).
Graves of Category
В
(5
assemblages) contained
8
flint artifact: an axe, an arro¬
whead, a sidescraper, a para-backed insert
(?),
a reto¬
uched laminar flake with, and flakes
(cf.
Table.
3).
Flint
artifacts from graves of Categories C-F
(29
pieces in
total) were found in
9
assemblages. They include tools
-
axes, sidescrapers, arrowheads, retouched blades,
one flake with marginal retouch) and blanks
-
flakes,
laminar flakes, blades, and a splintered piece (Table
4).
Characteristics of the lithic chipped industry of
CWC within tree categories described above is a de¬
manding task, because of the shortage evidences and
their very unequal distribution within the distingu¬
ished chronological phases. For that reason we will
limit our analysis to a general presentation of the ma¬
terial, focusing on their most characteristic elements.
List of lithic forms recovered from graves acco¬
unts to
16
positions. The collection of
46
artifacts inc¬
ludes
12
tool forms (in the typological sense) constitu¬
ting
58.23%
of it. The other artifacts of the collection
are lithic blanks. The first group (tools) is dominated
by axes and arrowheads. It includes also blades with
marginal retouch, sidescrapers, retouched blades, re¬
touched laminar flakes, and para-backed inserts
(?).
There have been also registered other forms: a com¬
bined tool (sidescraper
+
knife-like tool), a striker, a
splintered piece, and a retouched flake. Among com¬
mon knapping products flakes prevail, but we have
also blades, laminar flakes and one splinter (Table S).
In the scope of raw material, the assemblage
is dominated by the Volhynian flint
(66
pieces, i.e.
83.54%).
There has been also registered a spora¬
dic the presence of the erratic flint
(7
artifacts, i.e.
8.86%).
Five artifacts of an undetermined siliceous
rock constitute
6.32%
of the collection and a single
piece of the
Świeciechów
flint
1.26%.
Blades and blade tools are the widest at the stri¬
king platform part, have the proximal part either co¬
nverging or straight, and triangular or
trapezoid
(occa¬
sionally also polygonal) cross-section. They feature a
slight middle bent and straight or S-profiles at the stri¬
king platform. The latter is usually plane, lenticular in
shape, high, and of single-negative. Edges of striking
platforms are trimmed On artifact shows facet traces.
Practically all forms have on
lhe
dorsal side impact
scars on the percussion bulb and „teardrop" splitting
negatives beneath the platform edge.

type were obtained from
single-platform cores, conical or para-conical. In early
stage of exploitation they might have a narrow striking
face (such a presumption is based on
trapezoid
cross-
section of blades and their straight terminations).
Striking platforms of flakes and tools made on
blades do not morphologically differ from platforms
of blades described above. Only a single example of
the sidescraper has the edge-like platform.
Arrowheads constitute the only group of typolo¬
gical forms produced from flake blanks. We should
be very cautious to draw chronological conclusions
on the basis of their morphological-metric differen¬
tiation. It is because we are not sure whether their
positioning in graves
-
single artifacts near or on
human remains, was always intentional. Two cases
of two arrowheads found in one burial
(Łubcze,
Site
25,
Barrow
2,
Grave
2,
and Wierszczyca, Site

Barrow
1,
Grave
1)
are exceptional in this respect.
Tools shaped with application of the block-re¬
duction technique are represented by axes. As arro¬
wheads, they do not show any evident differences
within the three distinguished chronological phases.
However, they can be discriminated on the basis of
features the secondary importance observed within
them. In the collection we have axes of rectangular
and lenticular cross-section.
Excavated burials from the Sokal Hills are simi¬
lar to CWC graves in western Lesser Poland. Almost
all types of burials on the area of our interest (Ta¬
ble
4)
have their analogies there. Some observable
differences are of minor importance and are related
mainly to frequencies of individual forms.
Lithic chipped industry of CWC utilized vario¬
us chipping techniques of tool shaping: surface re¬
touching (axes, arrowheads), edge retouching (im¬
plements made on laminar flakes and flakes), also
in forms of oblique flat lamellar or pseudo-lamellar
trimming (retouched blades and arrowheads), and a
specific application
-
courtsation. There are also tra¬
ces of the splintering technique.
Interesting is the observation that more than
37%
of lithic artifacts recovered from graves are incom¬
plete forms (I do not mean any kinds on modern-time
damage. Both chipping products (blades, laminar fla¬
kes, and flakes) and tools have some parts missing.
They are usually distal or proximal ends, but also
edge parts
-
parallel or oblique to the percussion axis
of the blank (presumable para-backed inserts. Missing
blank ends can be related to the intentional removal of
bent (distal) and thick (proximal) parts. Blanks frag¬
mented in such a way could be utilized as
segmental
blades (e.g.
13
artifacts of similar metric characteri¬
stics found in Grave
2
at
Łubcze,
Site
25,
Barrow
2).
Analysis of flint inventories of graves from three
CWC developing stages, taking into account age and
sex of the dead and location of artifacts, has not been
conclusive in relation to the possible interrelations
between those elements, mainly because of the poor
state of skeletal remains and
-
in consequence
-
lack
of many important information (Table
6).
The most
persistent forms are: axes (located near legs, feet, or
hips of the dead, but also in various parts of grave pits),
arrowheads (near legs, behind head, shoulders, or hips,
in the central part of the skeleton, and outside of it),
and laminar forms (near legs, hips, shoulders, head,
and in the central part of the skeleton). Number of arti¬
facts found in one grave varies from one to seventeen.
Row material analysis indicated the predominan¬
ce of the Volhynian flint
(83.54%
of the whole col¬
lection). It appears in two varieties of glossy-gray or
matt-gray siliceous mass (in some cases banded or
dotted), occasionally merging one into another. Be¬
sides a general inference that the rocks in question
come from Volhynia, we are unable to identify more
precisely their deposits. Share of other rocks is mi¬
nimal: the erratic flint
- 8.86%,
flint of unidentified
kind
- 6.33%,
and the
Świeciechów
flint
- 1.26%.
The last rock is represented by one artifact only
(a rectangular axe).
Seven funerary assemblages of the Mierzanowi-
ce culture contained in total
19
flint artifacts. The
list includes tools (arrowheads, a sidescraper, reto¬
uched laminar flake, a burin), and chipping products
-
flakes and laminar flake (Table
7).
As blanks there were utilized mainly flakes,
very occasionally laminar flakes, and
-
exceptional¬
ly
-
blades (the burin).
Inventory of two graves of the Funnel Beaker
culture includes marginally retouched blades and an
arrowhead (Table
9).
Flint artifacts were also found in
19
barrow mo¬
unds damaged by plowing
(cf.
Table
1).
They were
recovered from layers above visible outlines of grave
pits and other structures. Due to various degrees of
the destruction of the barrows we cannot unquestio¬
nably associate the artifacts in question with indivi¬
dual features. The task is even more difficult becau¬
se of the presences potsherds of other culture in the
vicinity of the excavated barrows. In seven barrows
lithic artifacts from cultural layers we found only
in the CWC context, in one
-
in the
MC
context.
Lithic artifacts from cultural layers with CWC
features (almost
40
artifacts) do not differ from the¬
ir counterparts from closed assemblages. However,
some of them can be linked the Middle Paleolithic
(a Levallois flake), Late Paleolithic (a burin and an
endscraper), and the
Lusatian
culture (backed insert). |
