We may think of Voltaire
(1694-1778)
as a
leading figure of the Enlightenment. Yet
he himself never sought to be a leader of the
Enlightenment, or indeed of anything. What he
wanted was to be an entertainer: a writer, a poet,
a playwright and a storyteller. In this he succeeded
brilliantly, with a meteoric career as France s
leading writer of classical verse tragedies.
As a result, he became the most celebrated and
the most controversial literary figure in Europe.
The fertility of his wit, intellect and imagination,
and the range of his interests, kept him
permanently in the public eye; if he was a
philosophe,
he was also the first example of a
truly international celebrity. In other words, he
became one of Europe s first public intellectuals.
In the process, he became a moral leader of the
Enlightenment. What he needed for himself, most
deeply, was the freedom to write and the freedom
to speak, and especially the freedom to question
official doctrines; and it was this claim which
made him most famous in his lifetime, when he
campaigned noisily against a series of spectacular
miscarriages of justice. What we owe to him is his
belief in the essential value of toleration in the
face of fanaticism, and in the right of every man
to think and say what he liked.
This magnificent biography celebrates the man,
enriched by an extraordinarily diverse range of
quotations from his work, above all from the
thousands of his letters which have survived.
