That survey in¬ cludes 10,496 Serbian, 16,146 Albanian, 86 Turk, 71 Cherkes, 59 Muslim (Serbian and Turkish speaking), 1,105 Gypsy (Roma, orthodox and Muslim), and 53 settlers Slavic and non - Slavic houses — families, in total 28,016 houses in all village settle- Атанасије Урошевић ments, hamlets and small towns, not including towns Pristina, Kosovska Mitrovica and Gnjilane, about which Urosevic published different monographs included in chapter III, together with the works on small towns. In the supplement (B) of chapter IV, a tabular survey of Patron Saint s Day for all Christians in Gornja Morava and Izmornik was created as a model of meticulous research of customs and traditional Christian culture in the scholarly work of Atanasije Urosevic . The survey of migration and ethnic origin of population in chapters IV, V and VI was supplemented by the chapter VII, with the numerical data concerning number of houses, migration origin and certain ethno-genetic characteristics of sus¬ ceptible to assimilation and resistant ethnic groups; this chapter ends with a general summary, followed by a supplement (A) on Chitac people and Cherkes and supple¬ ment (B) on ethno-religious structure of the population of Kosovo towns and structure of population according to their mother tongue, based on the census of The Kingdom of Yugoslavia population, conducted on 31. March 1931, with a detailed explication. The works included in the chapter VIII deserve particular attention due to an exceptional importance of onomatology research to which valuable contribution is given by Urosevic in his anthropogeographic monographs and other works, as well as in his study of Kosovo toponyms. On a lasting bond between two homelands and scholarly research work A number of articles has been published describing the life and work of Atanasije Urosevic in The Academy s and other publications and 16 papers from a special Collection of Works by The Institute for Serbian Culture from Pristina were read at scholarly gathering held in Belgrade and Leposavić on 30./31. May 2002. Additionally, in the forewords to the revised edition of his monumental study of Kosovo and synthesis studies of Kosovo toponyms and ethnical processes in Kosovo during the Ottoman reign, as well as in the first edition of this book, it was particularly emphasised that entire Urosevic s scholarly work on Kosovo is essential for any of scholarly based observations, which regard this prominent figure of Serbian national science among classics of Cvijić s school. Moreover, many authors pointed out to a deep and permanent connection between his homeland, personal life and professional biography and his scholarly interests, chronology and connection between his life and creative effort and work. Therefore, we are going to state the factors and circumstances that confirm the previous conclusion. 534 О КОСОВУ Atanasije Urošević is an authentic Old Serbian, born in Gnjilane on 14. Oc¬ tober 1898. in a tradesman family originally from Velika Носа or Prizren, which moved to Kosovsko Pomoravlje to escape Albanian anarchy and violence. He gra¬ duated from a four-class primary school in Gnjilane, and then, under the influence of Young Turk component in Turkish government, studied for two years in the Tur¬ kish secondary school in Priština, where he was provided free schooling and accom¬ modation at boarding school. This fact was of importance for future Urošević s schoolarly work, since the knowledge of Turkish language eased communication with ethnic Turks and assimilated Albanians, who constituted almost the second largest population after Serbs in Kosovo towns, even after The Balkan and The First World War — in Pristina even relative majority of nearly 46% , with Serbs orthodox, catholics and Muslims constituting about 38%. After the Balkan Wars of 1912 / 1913 Atanasije finished the second class at the Serbian Grammar School in Skopje, the main political and cultural centre of South Serbia and Macedonia ofthat time. After the end of The World War One, during which he lived in his hometown Gnjilane, he graduated from the Grammar School in Skopje in 1922 and enrolled on studies of geography and cul¬ tural anthropology at the Philosophical Faculty in Skopje — a branch of Belgrade University. He finished studies in 1926., did his PhD dissertation on Gornja Morava and Izmornik at the Philosophical Faculty in Belgrade in 1929. and started a university career as an Assistant Lecturer at the Philosophical Faculty in Skopje, and with utmost effort, typical of the best and most zealous members of Cvijić s school, in the following years he engaged into scholarly research of Novobrdo Kriva Reka, Kosovo valley, Sirinic region, Vučitrn Šalja, Lab, bordering areas of Gnjilane Karadag towards Preševo — Kumanovo Povija, describing with a filigree precision catholic parish Crna Gora (Letnica parish), specific ethno-biological processes in Kosovo and Kosovo Po- moravlje, particularly in towns, small towns and certain groups of village settlements. Such an imposing research opus did not pass without mentioning settling of Serbs and Montenegrins (so called settlers ), whom Urosevic regarded in his anthropo-geo- graphic works as a settlement contingent of particular national, state and economic importance in the context of agrarian reform, abolishing feudal system and peasant agrarian regime, not only to Kosovo and Metohija, but to many other regions of South Serbia, At the same time, Urosevic showed gift for statistical interpretation of settle¬ ment process. After four years spent in Germany as a prisoner of war (April 1944 — April 1945) Urosevic returned to Skoplje where he, in a newly established University, accepted different lecturing, organisational and research engagements, until his retire- 535 Атанасије Урошевић ment in a capacity of a full professor in 1964. Atanasije Urošević never distanced himself in mind, thought and emotion from deep attachment to his Gornjemoravski and entire Kosovo Old Serbia homeland, to which he devoted by far the largest part of his scholarly research ;ork in the field of anthropogeography and related fields — ethnography, historio 1 <*e igraphy, cultural history, historical demography, sociology and onomathology, fn ліу connecting original characteristics of his roots - thorough¬ ness, diligence, steadiness, objectivity and sensibility, cautioness and distrust to any unreliable information, with research work methodology of Cvijić anthropogeographic — ethnographic school as well as with his own methodological contribution in the field of its ontological — epimostological basis. One would say that, in those relations, the most important was the principle of Cvijić s school according to which only problems and fact used for their scientific explication are collected- facts with no use are not collected! Although a follower of Cvijić s schollarly method, Urošević stands out for his superstructure of its postulate, methodological creativity which surpasses imitation of methodological sample, in order to create his paradigm, which he develops to perfection. Therefore, there is no unreliable generalisation in Urošević s work, but there is excellent understanding of mysterious, hidden occurrences of ethno-cultural and ethno-genetic character. Deep attachment to his native homeland was that first, blood, spiritual and persistent professional characteristics during all of his lifetime. At the same time, Old Serbian Atanasije Urošević was intimately attached to Skoplje Old Serbian — Macedonian city of multicultural environment, in which he, during his studies of geography and ethnology, with the support of professor Petar S. Jo- vanović and Serbian Royal Academy, started and developed anthropogeographic re¬ search, crowned with the monograph on Gornja Morava and Izmornik - scholarly work which evaluators of the entire opus of Serbian anthropo-geographic studies con¬ sidered model works of permanent scholarly value, which essential for the period of anthropogeographic-ethnographic studies of Kosovo and Metohija between two wars. Urošević s scholarly work between two wars and the beginning of university career was firmly connected with Skoplje, Philosophical Faculty in Skoplje, Skoplje scholarly society and its herald which gathered Yugoslav and Russian Emigra intellectual elite and represented one of the most distinguished scholarly publication in Balkan, in the same way The Serbian Royal Academy, with its Serbian Ethnographic Collection - the unique publication of its kind -, had been support to his development into the leading researcher of Kosovo Old Serbia since Urošević s student days. Not even the war period between 1941- 1945, when he, as a reserve officer of the Yugoslav army got into German captivity - which saved him from exile from Bulgarian occupation 536 О КОСОВУ and annexation, nor after war changes in state-political organization of socialist Yu¬ goslavia, did not distance him from his second — and according to his scholarly work — first homeland. On the contrary! Atanasije Urošević responded to an appeal by the new government to help development of Macedonian university lecturing — scholarly centre, particularly Natural — Mathematics Faculty and its Geography department, accepting the mission to become the founder of Macedonian Geographic Society, while during the period of his active engagement at the University Kiril and Metodij in Skoplje (1946-1964) he lectured on a number of subjects and published and wrote course books for Physical Geography (1952), land hydrography (1954) and cartogra¬ phy (1964), for which he had particular liking. In the period from the late 50 s and early 60 s of the last century to the end of his life in 1992, Urošević linked his scholarly activity to The Serbian Academy of Science and Art, its Department of Social Studies, The Serbian Ethnographic Collection and Ethnographic Institute. Atanasije Urošević had never been at variance between Skoplje and Belgrade, nor between his Gnjilane — Kosovo and Skoplje homeland, since he had delicate sense of being able to make wise and accurate estimation of social — political circumstances, honestly accom¬ plishing missions assigned to him and bravely bearing crucial moments which did not spoil his moral and scholarly integrity, not even when he, after retirement, before the torrent of pogrom — like Albanian nationalism, silently left Priština University., where he tried, according to his professional and patriotic conscience, to contribute to de¬ velopment of geography lecturing and the subject itself. In that context academic Vladimir Stojančević at the scholarly gathering dedicated to Atanasije Urošević (Beograd — Leposavić 2002), pointed out to all these characteristics of Urošević s personality and scholarly work, which were, despite the harsh adversities he encoun¬ tered, and remained, until the end, inviolable. Atanasije Urošević, says Stojančević, preserved and firmly formed, a perso¬ nality of strong national feeling, but also freethinking, and of strong personal integrity typical of democratic Serbia at the beginning of 20th century (...). Identyfing himself with the science, he insisted on its objectivity as the truth which cannot be distorted , (...) after complete collapse of Serbian national policy in Kosovo and Metohija , as the trauma hard and almost impossible to get over , probably like Slobodan No- vaković (...) with deep sadness in his soul, but a stoic in his mind, ended up his long life without two homelands: one from his childhood — Gnjilane and the other from his youth — Skopje. 537 Атанасије Урошевић Ending these observations, it is my duty to point out to another characteristic of Urošević s personality and his scholarly work which almost eludes the attention of evaluators and promoters. And this is absolute distance and dislike for any or any¬ body s nationalistic - chauvinist feelings, actions and insinuations, which were diffi¬ cult to resist in the condition of crucial geo-political and social changes which harmed Federative Yugoslavia, Serbia more than any other country, together with its Kosovo Metohija state, cultural and spiritual centre. In Urošević s behaviour and scholarly work there is no trace of nationalistic enthusiasm and interpretation of anthropogeo- graphic processes, but there are outstanding observations and explanations concerning character of native Serbs and settlers, particularly Montenegrins and Herzégovine, and Albanians, Turks, Cherkes, Roma and other ethnical groups in Kosovo- Metohija multi-ethnical and multi-cultural society which had been exposed on many occasions during Urošević s life to devastating critical changes, with tragic consequences for Serbian people on the whole area of Kosovo Metohija Old Serbia. Therefore, I consider that this aspect of Urošević s moral and scholarly integrity, for the purpose of accuracy and objectivity of scholarly judgment, requires a special attention. With academic Atanasije Urošević and pleiad of his predecessors, contemporaries and followers in the field of anthro- pogeography and related sciences, the fundamental period of anthropogeographic- ethnological school and its results of permanent scholarly value is completed. It proved lately that, that enormous knowledge fund is of current interest from historical and social aspect as much as it had been in the period of research and search for scholarly truth.
