Between Broadway and Hollywood
Summary
Broadway and Hollywood, the American show-business capitals, are sy¬
nonymous with fame and fortune. Although they attracted many Polish
film and theatre artists, relatively few were able to carve out careers there.
Despite the fact the talents were discovered in these capitals, most were
only stars for one season, who shone in a couple of performances or films.
Still, between Broadway and Hollywood, there were a lot of centers whe¬
re great art was made and there were many stages full of true diamonds.
Part of them cut in Poland. I dedicate this book to them.
This book introduces several artists who
-
in the first half of the
20th century
-
contributed to Polish and American culture. In symbolic
»Forgotten Stars Avenue I reveal their achievements on both sides of the
ocean. The first star belongs to Richard Ordynski, a director who was
the forerunner of theatre reform in the United States. Between
1915
and
W20, as American theatre stepped in the way of art showned by Europe¬
ans, he introduced the Max
Reinhardt
style and method of directing to
different kinds of theatres: from student and independent performances,
through musicals to the outdoor pageants. He taught a large number of
American actors and directors. In
1915
Ordynski cooperated with artist
painter
Władysław
Theodore
Benda,
the talented nephew of the great
tragedienne Helena Modjeska. Soon
Benda
became famous as the maker
of original masks which were admired by the Broadway revue producers
and critics alike, used by theatre and film-makers and exhibited in the
famous galleries. In
1916
Ordynski invited another artist painter,
Witold
Jurgielewicz-Gordon to work on set decorations for his productions.

Summary
_________________________
Gordon worked on many areas of artistic creation and introduced what
we now know as „Art
Deco
style to America. In the US Ordynski also
met Ganna Walska who came to New York hoping to become
a pri¬
ma
donna. She became the talk of the town
-
not through her artistic
achievements but her sensational exploits. After some years, this kind
oí
noteriety was forgotten, but her contributions as the owner of the Paris
Theatre Champs
Elysées
and the founder of the unique
Lotusland
bota¬
nical garden in California were ever-lasting.
During WWI two silent film stars left Poland for America. The first
was
Pola
Negri
-
who became a Hollywood movie goddess. This book
contains part of her biography: some details of her Polish career, her life
in San Antonio, Texas and newspaper accounts underscoring her celebri¬
ty status in Poland and the United States. The second actress was
Halina
Bruzovna. She made several unsuccessful attempts to become a Holly¬
wood film star and Broadway artist. She lacked persistence and ambition,
however. Unlike Bruzovna, a young actress from Krakow
Marianna
Mi¬
chalská,
attained stardom. The world knew her as „the Polish Cinderella
Gilda
Gray
-
the „shimmy queen, an icon of the Roaring Twenties and
star of the
Ziegfeld
Follied. The next artist,
Marek
Windheim,
never made
career as a leading man and usually played minor roles. This „master

episodes, did work on famous shows in illustrious theatres, however.
After some years of relative obscurity, singing and dancing in Warsaw s
cabarets, he found his way to the Metropolitan Opera and to Hollywood
where he appeared in fifty films.
Jewish actors who began their careers on the Polish stage constitu¬
ted quite a big group who sought the „American dream. Three of them
were born in
Lwow
(when it was the Polish city). The oldest was the
tragedienne Bertha
Kalich
whose contribution to Jewish theatre was as
significant as Modjeska s to Polish theatre. Like Modjeska,
Kalich
lear¬
ned English then came to the American stage where she played lead roles
in tragedies and psychological dramas and was able to claim to the legacy
of her great predecessor. Comic roles were the domain of
Ludwig Satz.
This natural talent was called „The Jewish Chaplin. He was loved by
the poorest and lost Jewish emigrants in New York, and helped them to
survive through adversity with a smile on their faces. His successor was
Leo Fuchs -
perhaps an even more versatile talent. He trained in Jewish
and Polish cabarets then spent many years in Second Avenue theatres on

American musicals, film, and theatre. Joseph Buloff was also of Jewish
origin but came from
Vilna.
He learned his art while travelling with The
Vilna
Troupe all over Poland and Europe. He was a fine actor both in
comic and tragic roles and, like
Fuchs,
known by Jewish as well as Ame¬
rican audiences. Since he took part in Oklahoma!, the well known Broad¬
way musical, I write about him in the last chapter together with
Witold
Gordon and the three dancers who performed in the show:
Dania Krup¬
ska,
Sonia Wojcikowska
and Eva Rubinstein. Although, the dancers
were not born in Poland but from time to time they visited or worked in
the country of their ancestors.

thanks to the finan¬
cial and educational support of the
Kosciuszko
Foundation. I started this
journey tracing the „faded stars in Buffalo where, as the guest of the
State University of New York, I had the pleasure to work in
Lockwood
Library. Then I did research at The Hillman Library at The University
°f Pittsburgh, Harry Ransom Center at University of Texas in Austin
(Norman Bel Geddes Archive), Special Collections of The
Blume
Lib-
rary at St. Mary s University in San Antonio (The
Pola
Negri
Archive),
The New York Public Library, YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, The
Metropolitan Opera Archives, The Shubert Archive at Lyceum Theatre,
Princeton University Library s Department of Rare Boob and Special
Collections
(Otton
Kahn
Archive), The Robert and Molly Freedman Je¬
wish Music Archive at Rare Boob and Manuscript Library, The Uni¬
versity of Pennsylvania, UCLA Film
&
Television Archive. I also visited
Eleanor Shimler and Ann Taylor
-
the daughter and granddaughter of
У Т.
Benda in
Connecticut, The Illustration House art gallery in New
York and Ganna
Walska s
Lotusland
garden in California. I completed
Щ
research in Polish libraries and archives
-
mostly in the Jagiellonian
Library in Krakow.
I am deeply indebted to the libraries, institutions and all the people
1
had the pleasure meeting and who helped me in many ways. Thanks to
them the journey was not only educational but also adventureous.
