EDUCATION
Written specifically for teachers, this book offers a wealth of research-based
principles for motivating students to learn. Its focus on motivational principles
rather than motivation theorists or theories leads naturally into discussion of
specific classroom strategies.Throughout the book these principles and strategies
are tied to the realities of contemporary schools (e.g., curriculum goals) and
classrooms (e.g., student differences, classroom dynamics). The author employs
an eclectic approach to motivation that shows how to effectively integrate
the use of extrinsic and intrinsic strategies. Guidelines are provided for adapting
motivational principles to group and individual differences and for doing repair
work with students who have become discouraged or disaffected learners.
•
Changes —In addition to updating, this edition features new material on
the role of parents in their children s school motivation, on goal theory and
self-determination theory, on the value aspects of motivation, on the self
and identity aspects of motivation, and on the teacher s role in scaffolding
students motivation.
»
Teacher Oriented—The coverage focuses on those aspects of the
motivational literature that are directly applicable to classroom teaching,
that is, it focuses on the teacher as the motivator more than it does on the
student as the motivatee.
•
Organizing Perspectives—The author uses three general perspectives to
organize the field:
1)
social milieu/learning community,
2)
expectancy/
confidence/efficacy aspects of motivation, and
3)
value aspects of
motivation. This helps readers see the connections among related theories
as well as teachers strategies for motivating students.
>
Value Aspects of Motivation —More than other texts, this one emphasizes
the value aspects of motivation. This is what most teachers have in mind
when they talk about school-based motivation, that is, how can I get my
students to see value in the curriculum and lessons I am teaching.
Jere
Brophy is University Distinguished Professor ofTeacher Education and
of Counseling, Educational Psychology, and Special Education at Michigan
State University.
