PREFACE
The title of this book may seem rather a portmanteau one, hiding a diversity of
contents hardly connected with each other. But they are connected in the author s
mind by a common approach. They are all studies of how religion on the one
hand, and politics and society on the other, impact on, or are intertwined with,
each other. The religion may be that of rulers like Charlemagne, bishops like
Boniface or Liudprand of Cremona, churches like Magdeburg or Saint-Denis,
writers like
Bede.
Or it may be that in question are religious phenomena like
angelic apparitions, conversion, or apocalypticism.
A friendly critic who heard my
Slade
lectures, which became my book,
Ottoman Book Illumination: An Historical Study, said to me in a relieved tone,
I see that you have wanted to deal with real things. I took that to mean that as
an historian I had not taken refuge in art from political and social history. Indeed
I had not! A large theme in that book was the necessity to study religion as a
whole in
Ottonian
society in order to understand its art, including what might
be called its political art. Again in my recent book, Church and Cosmos in Early
Ottoman Germany: The View from Cologne (Oxford,
2007),
I have tried to show
from annotations in manuscripts at Cologne, where the brother of Emperor
Otto I was archbishop, a religious/intellectual world underpinning rule in the
mid-tenth-century West. The approach is to combine a study of how scholars
read texts of religious significance with a study of how Ruotger, in particular,
in his Life of Bruno of Cologne, wrote about politics in the tenth century. Thus
these two books and the papers collected in the present volume have not so
much a coherence of argument as one of approach. The approach is not, of
course, new, but I hope its applications in these varied papers have their own
interest, not least human interest, which has saved my approach from turning
into a blanket methodology.
My indebtedness to many persons is expressed in the notes to particular
articles, but I should like to single out three for special mention. One is Ralph
Davis, my former tutor, who imparted to me his love of the detective element in
writing history (when combined with an argument of historical interest), which
can be seen in more than one of these papers. The second is John Smedley of
Ashgate Publishing Ltd, who has given me the opportunity to put together and
publish the present volume. The third but not the least, is Karl Leyser, who
would have been
90
in the year of this publication, had he not been cut off in
1992
when he still had so much to offer to the world of scholarship. The reader
