to two billion dollars a year marketing the foods, clothing, objects, vacations, and
events that help people express their ethnic identities. In Shopping for Identity,
Marilyn Halter demonstrates that as immigrant groups gain economic security, they
tend to reinforce, not relinquish, their ethnic identification. And the marketplace has
responded to this phenomenon by both tweaking old products and inventing new ones,
vigorously seizing the opportunities offered by the marketing of ethnicity.
Halter brings to her subject an abundance of anecdotal evidence, overt exam¬
ples of ethnic marketing, and interviews with entrepreneurs. Provocative and
