Summary
In the introduction to my work on Slovak organ building I tempt the
reader, particularly the
VŠMU
student in Bratislava who is studying
organ playing and church music, to have a closer look at the subject
in this branch of science. I must say that the situation has partially
improved. In addition to older written material which is poorly rep¬
resented we have recorded several interesting studies on organs in
Slovakia and lesser comprehensive profiles of organs from Slovakia.
Relatively extensive publications about the leading personality in
19th century Slovak organ building, Martin
Šaško
senior of
Brezová
pod
Bradlom,
have appeared. A publication entitled The
Brezová
organ builder Martin
Šaško,
his forbears and descendants was writ¬
ten by
Oľga Kovačovičová-Húsková
in
2006.
The book is conceived
more as a biography and is furnished with very detailed genealogies.
My book entitled Martin
Šaško
and his organ building school was
published in
2003
and is directed chiefly towards the works of Mar¬
tin
Šaško
senior but as the title implies also to the works of his stu¬
dents

There also ap¬
peared monographs on other organ builders such as Valentin Arnold

We need to value the fact that at
VŠMU
numerous theses, even one at PhD level, have appeared dedicated to
organ building in Slovakia. In the doctoral thesis
Marek
Серко
has
very well researched the organs built in Slovakia by the Rieger Broth¬
ers firm from their establishment in
1873
through to the end of the
First World War.
My own work I have dedicated to the history of the organ in Slo¬
vakia. I endeavour to bring the history of the organ in Slovakia to the
reader but also to call attention to some important moments in the
development of the organ in the rest of the world. The book is divided
into chapters according to the main parts of the organ. I consider
the main parts to be soundboards, actions, consoles, specifications,
stops, pipes, playing aids, bellows and finally organ cases. Since
works on the beginnings of the organ in Slovakia are few and infor¬
mation is scattered in various places and is sometimes difficult to ac¬
cess, before dealing with individual parts of the organ I have tried to
offer the reader (brief) initial remarks on the building of organs in
Slovakia and subsequently the first preserved organ builders memo¬
ries dating from the first half of the 17th century. These relate to the
oldest instruments or their parts in the church of St James in
Levoča
(1624-1631),
St
Nicholas in
Prešov
(1636)
and the Lutheran church
in
Štitnik
(1639).
I have tried to mention all the instruments which
date from the 17th century. There are more than
20
of them and their
standards of conservation differ. Likewise of the organs from the first
decades of the 18th century I have listed all. From the remaining dec¬
ades of the 18th century, that is from the time when many organs were
preserved,

had to make a choice. From the 19th and 20th centuries
only the most interesting organs are mentioned or those which are
outstanding due to their technical, specification or artistic design.
So that the work is as clear as possible, the individual chapters are
divided into smaller sections. Soundboards are divided according to
their construction: tone channels, stop channels and so-called unit
chest
(Kegellade).
The above-mentioned and main ones are of course
representatives of different types of soundboard
-
soundboards with
tone channels, slider soundboards; soundboards with stop channels,
cone chests; but also various others. Great care is directed to so-called
economy soundboards, that is soundboards using transmissions,
extensions and unit chests. Actions are divided into two large groups,
playing and stop actions. Among these are mechanical, pneumatic,
electric and various hybrid actions connecting them. With consoles
I analyse the possibilities of their locations. Where consoles are con¬
cerned, I deal with manual and pedal keyboards, chiefly their com¬
passes, fixed and free combinations, stop
crescendos,
swell boxes etc.
Specifications are divided according to individual instruments, Posi¬
tive, specifications of one, two, three and four manual organs and Ped¬
al specifications. Stops are separated into groups

Principal, Flute,
String, overblown, Mixtures, reed stops etc. In these cases they are
broken down into the main representatives of individual groups. Un¬
der pipes I deal with pipe material, their shape, various beards, tuning
devices and similar. I also mention various accessories like timpany,
bird song (nightingale), bells, tremulants etc. Under bellows not only
are their different types and uses in Slovakia dealt with but also for
instance wind pressures. I have not avoided organ cases where I fo¬
cus on the location of cases inside (the building), the configuration of
individual departments (Werkprincip) and the placing of all depart¬
ments in a common case. Neither have I avoided organ case decora¬
tion. I have concerned myself with each part of the organ from ini¬
tial information in Slovakia but with more detailed information only
from periods where specific solutions were preserved in Slovakia. For
a better arrangement I have not divided individual chapters and their
parts into several time periods but I deal with them from the earliest
data up to the present. So for instance I deal with slider soundboards
from as early as the 17th century but soundboards with stop channels
from only the middle of the 19th century although I draw attention to
the fact that these types of soundboards with stop channels could ex¬
ceptionally be found in Europe back in the 18th century. I list numer¬
ous examples from preserved instruments and describe a few specific
solutions characteristic of individual organ builders and workshops.
I support individual assertions with examples from particular organs
listed in the text or in an extensive notebook. I have done my best to
illustrate the text; unfortunately possibilities regarding inclusion of
a greater number of pictures in a larger format were limited. In order
for the reader to form his own opinion, possibly to review assertions
with actual organs, I have tried to include the largest possible number
of detailed descriptions of instrument entries different periods, vari¬
ous sizes and naturally various builders. Originally more than
150
or¬
gan entries were covered in the publication. For space and financial
reasons it was not possible to show all of them in the work. I decided
to eliminate the large majority of examples from the work of Martin
Šaško
senior and his disciples since these are available in the already
mentioned publication on Martin
Šaško.
And despite this precaution
I had to remove from the book other instruments which I considered
important. I had to confine the supplement to

instruments. In or¬
der to save space the instrument entries and annotations are set using
a smaller print. When listing individual instruments I show where
each is to be found, in the case of catholic churches usually also with
their dedication. As there are in Slovakia many places with the same
name I elected to state the jurisdiction of the locality to its individual
district only in cases where it is necessary for a safe identification. In
cases of individual instruments in church buildings I list the dioceses
and deaneries including
seniorates
to which they belong. The western
province of the Slovak Roman Catholic church underwent reorgani¬
sation in
2008.
Since not all dioceses have yet publicised their new
directories, for some entries the old diocese and deanery are shown.
In the instance where it was possible to find the affiliation according
to the new arrangement, it is stated in brackets.
