Oral problems are common in cancer patients, and are a significant cause of morbidity in
this group. Furthermore, in some patients they can prevent administration of potentially life-
saving treatment, whilst in others they can themselves cause potentially life-threatening
complications. However, oral problems are usually predictable, and may be prevented or
ameliorated by appropriate interventions.
This unique book provides an international, up-to-date, evidence-based, clinically-
relevant reference source for all members of the multi-professional oncology team on the
oral complications of cancer and its management. The book is written by international
authorities in their respective specialties, and in the field of oral complications of cancer.
It includes extensive tables, figures, clinical photographs, and references. The topics
covered include oral anatomy and physiology, oral assessment and oral hygiene, as well as
more common oral complications of cancer and its treatment. Surgical, radiotherapy and
chemotherapy side-effects are detailed in overview chapters, whilst specific problems are
discussed in detail in separate chapters (e.g. oral mucositis). Other chapters focus on oral
infections, and major oral symptoms experienced by patients with cancer (e.g. xerostomia).
Furthermore, there are chapters addressing the needs of specific groups of patients (e.g.
paediatric patients), and the health economic impact of oral complications.
This book is a complete reference source for the multi-disciplinary team involved in treating
the cancer patient with oral problems, including oncologists (both medical and clinical),
oncology nurses, oral medicine specialists, special care dentists, dental nurses/hygienists,
palliative care professionals, and (radio-)therapy radiographers.
