adam_text | At a time of grave economic uncertainty, The
End of Lawyers? predicts significant new pres¬
sures on the legal marketplace and, in turn, great
change in the world of legal services. This book
is the long awaited sequel to the legal bestseller
of
1996,
The Future of Law. In that earlier work,
Richard
Susskind
claimed that the law would
be transformed by IT. The book generated
enormous interest and influenced public policy¬
makers and top managers in law firms around
the globe. Many of its predictions have already
come to pass.
In The End of Lawyers?,
Susskind
sets a new
challenge for all lawyers. He urges them to ask
themselves what elements of their current
workload could be undertaken more quickly,
more cheaply, more efficiently, or to a higher
quality using different and new methods of
working. He argues that the market is unlikely to
tolerate expensive lawyers for tasks that can be
better discharged with the support of modern
systems and techniques. He claims that the legal
profession will be driven by two forces in the
coming decade: by a market pull towards the
commoditisation of legal services, and by the
pervasive development and uptake of new and
disruptive legal technologies. The threat here for
lawyers is clear
—
their jobs may well be eroded
or even displaced. At the same time, for entre¬
preneurial lawyers,
Susskind
foresees quite
different law jobs emerging which may be highly
rewarding, even if very different from those
of today.
This is a fascinating book. It raises serious
questions not only about the future of legal
practice, but about how legal services are
structured and delivered now. As is to be
expected from
Susskind,
the arguments are
pacey and challenging. The conclusions and
predictions are likely to provoke strong
reactions, but the book will not fail to engage.
Professor Dame Hazel Genn,
Dean, University College London
Faculty of Laws
Susskind
remains the only the writer today who
can put the future of lawyers and the legal
professions on the agenda at the highest levels of
government, the judiciary, the legal institutions,
major corporations
—
and law firms.
Charles Christian, editor,
Legal Technology Insider
Richard
Susskind
is an independent adviser to
professional firms and to national governments.
He is IT Adviser to the Lord Chief Justice of
England and Wales and Emeritus Professor of
Law at
Gresham
College, London. From
2003
until
2008,
he was Chair of the Advisory Panel
on Public Sector Information, a non-depart¬
mental public body set up by the Cabinet Office
and now sponsored by the Ministry of Justice.
Richard has written numerous books and over
100
columns on legal technology for The Times.
He has been invited to speak in more than
40
countries. He holds a doctorate in computers
and law from Balliol College Oxford, is a Fellow
of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and was
awarded an
OBE
in
2000
for services to IT in the
Law and to the Administration of Justice.
