Summary
The subject of S. Baczewski s book is the idea of nobility in Polish writing in the 16th and 17th
century. The structure of the book has been based on a chronological and problematic criterion. Part I
is entitled The development of the idea of nobility. It concerns the development of the idea of nobility as
citizenship: first, in theoretical treatises of the second half of the 16th century (Theorists and polemicists
of the 16th century), the approval of the idea by the noble political nation (The promulgation and
reception of the idea in great writers worL·) as well as in functional literature (Nobility in political
discourse). Next, the author proceeds to the moment which turned out to be crucial for the history of
the idea of nobility as citizenship (Zebrzedowski s rebellion). Since that time the interpretation of the
idea of nobility as a historical and genealogical phenomenon has been prevailing. What comes to the
fore in the comprehension of the idea is the legacy of blood (Decline of civil ideology: the 17th century).
In part I of the book the author emphasizes the relationship between the political system of the
Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the way the the idea of nobility was comprehended by sixteenth-
and seventeenth-century theorists, feature writers, and other men of letters. According to that way of
thinking, virtue was one of the most important elements which, generally speaking, decided about be¬
ing or not being a nobleman. Among the most important figures mentioned in this part were
Andrzej
Frycz Modrzewski, Andrzej Wolan, Stanisław Orzechowski Wawrzyniec Goślicki, Łukasz Górnicki, Se¬
bastian Petrycy
of
Pilzno, Mikołaj Rej and Jan Kochanowski.
At the time when it was taking its form,
the idea of nobility was bound up with the beginnings of republicanism among the gentry. Also, there
were attempts to discuss the idea of nobility made, among others, by the Jesuit
Piotr Skarga.
Thus, in
this part nobility has been shown as equal to citizenship.
Part II, Towards a closed society, concerns nobility as legacy
oí
blood. Compared with that stemming
from being virtuous, it was an alternative concept of nobility. Nobility comprehended in such a way
was independent of a political system. It resulted only from being born to the right family. For this
reason the most serious problem for so comprehended idea of nobility was the retention of pure blood
among the gentry as well as protection against mixing with commoners. A lot of attention has been
paid to the figure of
Bartosz Paprocki,
who was among the most significant theorists of a genealogical
and heraldic discourse, which was analogous to the West-European ethic of race. Paprocki was one of
those writers who affected the genr/s belief in an eternal character of their class. Two most significant
of his works were: Coats of arms of the Polish knighthood and The nest of virtue. His views on gentry and
nobility were carried on by Joachim
Bielski, Mikołaj Sęp Szarzyński,
and later on by
Szymon Okolski
and
Wojciech Dębołęcki.
A special attention has been paid to armorials, which became popular thanks to Paprocki s works
(Heraldic and genealogical discourse). The author emphasizes their major position in shaping the ide¬
ology of nobility. They contained the most profound interpretation of the socio-political doctrine of
nobility, characteristic for the 17th century. The author proceeds to discuss the influence of the ideolo¬
gy of the genealogical and historical nobility in middle and poor gentry s views (Between a class envy

and a heroic myth: a genealogical and historical discourse as related to middle and poor gentry s views
in the 17th cenury). The materials that has become the subject of examination are the texts written by
Walerian Nekandy-Trepka, Wacław Potocki
and Wespazjan Kochowski. The texts presented a simplified
version of the ideology of genealogical nobility. What emerges from those writings is the view in which
the boundary between a nobleman and a commoner, a peasant and
a
burgherwas
of biological nature.
Next, the author deals with interpretations of the concept of nobility occurring in treatises on nobility
in the second half of the 17th century. In those works the concept, previously equated with virtue of
ethical and political nature, became simplified and equated with valour on the battlefield as well as
the fight to protect Catholicism (New treatises on nobility).
Part III The idea of nobility in use. A discourse on panegyrical and preacher circulation in the 17th cen¬
tury concerns a discussion of particular source exemplifications illustrating a popular comprehension
of nobility, which was based on panegyrical functional texts. The first sub-chapter deals with functional
poetical texts
(stemmata
and epitalamia). The second one concerns funeral sermons in which the idea
of nobility was expressed in a variety of ways (Funeral sermons compared with the idea of nobility)
This part of the book stresses the fact that the idea of nobility was present not only in literary, journali¬
stic, and political texts. On the contrary, it constituted popular culture and accompanied the people of
the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in every aspect of their lives.
The major conclusion emerging from this book is the fact that the idea of nobility constituted one
of the most important elements which formed the ideology of political power in the second half of the
16th and 17th century. It was one of the constituents building the identity of the group (the gentry) as
well as legitimizing their political power.
