Selected problems of the European reception of Byzantium
from the seventeenth to twentieth centuries
Summary
The absence of Byzantium is how
Averil
Cameron, eminent British
Byzantinist, entitled her essay about the presence (or perhaps rather the
absence) of Byzantium in modern public discourse. It is difficult to disagree
with Cameron s diagnosis, which shows how Byzantium has been ignored
and disregarded throughout the centuries. In the same way, the reception
and use of Byzantine culture in the visual arts, in literature and in music is
paltry when compared to the use made of classical culture.
Historical conditions have shaped the image and perception of Byzan¬
tium in various cultures in different ways. But there are a small number
of common ways of understanding and interpreting Byzantium. There is
Greece, where Byzantium and the Byzantine legacy is an integral, though
sometimes unwelcome, part of history. Secondly, Russia and the Balkan
states whose histories were intertwined with that of the Byzantine Em¬
pire, provide an alternate way of viewing and using Byzantium. Russian
views of Byzantium changed considerably through the centuries. From the
sixteenth-century myth of the third Rome to the nineteenth-century very
negative views of Byzantine heritage (but at the same time the Russian
tsars dreamt about the conquest of Constantinople) to the return to
neobyzantine, imperial, ideology in today s Russia. The third way of view¬
ing Byzantium embraces those countries that somehow encountered By¬
zantium in their past. However, within this group Byzantium was per¬
ceived in very different ways. Approaches by French or English writers
and thinkers to Byzantine history were decidedly different to those of Pol¬
ish writers, who looked at Byzantium through the Russian mirror. Finally,
the last way of looking is reserved for those countries for whom
Byzantine culture serves as a source of literary motifs, and is an example
of an exotic country par excellence

ple in December
2006.
Two periods of history were crucial in shaping the image of Byzantium
in the modern world
—
the Enlightenment and nineteenth century. It does
not mean that Byzantine history has not been used
—
and abused
—
earlier
or later. Yet, majority of generalisations and stereotypes concerning Byzan¬
tium were conceived in the eighteenth century and reinforced (and some¬
times corrected) in the nineteenth. My work therefore concentrates on the
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
This book is divided into five chapters, with an introduction and sum¬
mary. The introduction deals with the general issues such as chronological
range of the material used, and the methodological approach (Harold Blo¬
om, Victor Turner, ideological myths and so on).
The first chapter, entitled Prolegomena Byzantina , is made up of two
parts
—
the first concerns the reception of Byzantine art in modern times.
As well as discussing a few works of art inspired by persons and events
from Byzantine history, I focus mainly on the opinions on Byzantine art
expressed by art historians and philosophers in the nineteenth century. The
second part of the introduction is devoted to the presence of Byzantium in
the political and public discourse in the three following countries

France,
Russia, and Greece.
The second chapter, The image of Byzantium in language and histori¬
ography , addresses two main issues
—
the use of the word Byzantinism
and its derivatives in most European languages as well as the image of the
Byzantine Empire in historiography between the eighteenth and twentieth
centuries. I have stressed the influence of the scholars of the Enlighten¬
ment, especially Edward Gibbon, in shaping the image of Byzantium in la¬
ter times. It has to be remembered, however, that very often opinions found
in the works of earlier historians, mainly Gibbon s history, were repeated by
others without due consideration for the context in which these texts were
created.
The central part of my work is the chapter Byzantium and literature .
Here I analyse a number of texts, from the seventeenth to the twentieth
centuries. I examine the works of the so-called school-theatre , whose plots
drew on Byzantine history, works dealing with the story of Belisarius, the
texts of the French decadents and finally some of the twentieth century
works such as the poetry of Yeats and
Umberto
Eco s novel Baudolino. The
aim of this chapter is to show which sources the authors used and what pic¬
ture of Byzantium they created in their works.
The next chapter, Byzantium with a Russian face concentrates on the
reception of Byzantium in Polish culture. The most important feature of the
reception of the Eastern Empire in Poland in the nineteenth century (more
accurately, that part of Poland under Russian rule) was the equation of By¬
zantium with Russia in popular imagination.

The last chapter, Medieval Gotham City discusses the presence of By¬
zantium in modern popular culture. I have discussed examples taken from
literature (mainly science-fiction and fantasy) and pop music. I have also
addressed the issue of Byzantium in cinema. I examine the films which
were inspired by events from Byzantine history, including the only film on
the fall of Constantinople, shot in
1913
in France, as well as a parody of
Turkish films dealing with Byzantine history, entitled Kahpe Byzans
—
Perfidious Byzantium .
In the Summary I show how the reception of Byzantium developed
through the centuries up to our own times and how strong, even today, are
the prejudices against Byzantium that were born during the Enlighten¬
ment.
