artistic values possessed by a nation. Authentic literary,
philosophical and utilitarian values of our oral literature are
reflected in every genre of oral literature one of them being

in its textual and substantial structure are reflections of our

the tradition endures changes. Such an evolution endure

based and approached both in the science of our folkloristic
and in connection with global folkloristic, but always
aspiring to clarify values of this genre of oral composition, as
well as to enrich Albanian folkloristic with a study on this
genre, which is absent in studies regarding oral literature
composition made by now.
"
Γ Γ
My work has been focused primarily in research,
collection and systematization of basic material exploiting
works of Albanian oral literature scholars, which
approached this composition from different viewpoints, but
also exploiting corresponding world literature on4 riddles
given by numbered eminent scholars in folkloristic, such as:
Archer Taylor, Alan Dundes, Robert A. Georges, Roger D.
Abrahams, Jan H.
Brunvand, Elli Köngäs Maranda,
Dan Ben-
Amos, W. J. Pepicello, Th. A. Green, A. Kaivola-Bregenhoj,
etc. In this study I have used analytical and synthetic
method as well as structural semantic approach, which
enabled analyses of most relevant and most functional
issues of a study, aiming as much correct definition of a
riddle as possible within our oral literature composition,
definition of its structural and poetical traits, as well as
meanings deriving from their structure.
An interest on the riddles of our oral literature
composition is relatively late. Collection and edition of the
riddles as our oral literature composition was made initially
by foreign albanologists, which collected different folkloric
materials mainly for linguistic studies. But, a great
contribution to our folkloristic is collection and edition of
Leontina Gega-Musa

materials by our early collectors, which by these materials
not only justified our rich cultural and spiritual tradition,
but also the compositional skill of our nation. In the frame
of these materials, collection and edition of riddles in
comparison with that of other genres is not sufficient, but
these are of peculiar vale and relevance, since remain as a
fact for testifying the presence and antiquity of this genre in
our oral composition.
.
Meanwhile the study of this genre, in the frame of
studies made on our oral literature composition, is not
carried as much as it should and is necessary. Ofr riddles, as
an important genre of Albanian oral composition except in a
preface of
<
any volume and some works satisfying needs of
school or university texts has not been done much.
Riddle, as a genre of literary oral composition,
togather with myth, fables; farytales and proverbs is one of
earliest formulated and extended thought variety. One
priority of these forms comparing with other oral
compositions, including riddles; are essential characteristics
as metaphorical structure, as well as comparisons and
perceptions of similarities and differences. A proof of their
ancientness is continual presence of elements such as
humor and intelligence in their content. Regarding this
there are series of ancient sources such as: Rig Veda of India,
Old Testament, some Island Sagas, Mesopotamiane
tableaus,
Talmud and Koran, etc. Howevere, as one of most
antient forms, during its evolutive progress has changed its
function and charachter from mythological to ritual to

game and intertainment with accentuated esthetical impact.
During this change of functions, the content of riddles
changed also, which was conditioned

History of riddle studies and

research includes
number of possible definitions regarding this
inglobai
phenomenon, recognized and present as a genre in lots of
oral literatures among different nations. Better part of
scholars studying riddles attempted to explain inherent
characteristics of this genre in as much clear way as possible
in order to achieve determination of a possible definition.
These studies unfold definitions succeeding one another,
starting from the earliest ones, as the one of Aristotle, which
in his book "Poetics" highlights that the riddle represents a
metaphorical structure, to the studies of numbered eminent
scholars in the world such as Hegel, which in his famous
lessons on esthetics, sets riddle together with allegory and
metaphor in "conscious symbolic". Same Andre
Jolles,
in
his study "Plain forms", distinguished riddle characteristics
in a quite clear form. Special attention to the riddles was
paid also by a prominent American scholar Archer Taylor,
known among scholars of oral composition as founder of
folkloristic studies, which at the same time established bases
of Anglo-American studies on riddles. However a set of
other scholars, in the world and the region, but also scholars
of our oral literature, followed Taylor in ascertaining that
Leontina Gega-Musa · 265
riddle is artistically rich genre and sufficiently present in
oral literature of lots of cultures, with similarities in
function, form and content. Similarity might be of a nature,
of same elements in objects, but also of figurative modes,
behind which is hidden required object. In such cases
according to
:
Sydow
there could be discussed of so called
oikotipes, which even though are part of culture in general,
nevertheless gain oral composition peculiarities of particular
culture. However, communal to these studies remains the
fact that riddle is
microstructure
and a component of short,
small or minor forms.
The riddle, even though it doesn't have extent of
explication as
к
do some other genres, is characterized by
attractiveness of artistic usage of object, as well as esthetic
and educative implication. This short form,* structured by
the question and the answer, with ambiguous expression
makes the riddle be very dynamic. In the riddle description
of an object is made indirectly. It doesn't mean it is done by
describing some other similar or opposite object, but it can
be done by accentuating some characteristics of the object
in question, either peculiar or general. Thus we can
ascertain thatthe unknown in the riddle is formed by means
of similar signs or antipodes. This makes riddle
distinguishable from other short forms particularly because
of the fact" that there description of an object or
phenomenon is done "indirectly which represents a
metaphorical description of the object or phenomenon.

Summary
Riddle classification is quite a complex issue exactly as
the one of other short forms. Riddles do not have broad and
peculiar content, according to which would be classified by
particular groups. In to date studies on oral Albanian
riddles classification was made according to their object and
function or according to objects' thematic. A more
complete classification could be considered the one of the
volume
"Gjëegjëza/The
riddle",
Tiranë
1968,
edition in
which, as a special category, are included problem riddles.
Same
A. Çetta
has used in his studies classification by
thematic groups, to which he added enigmas and question-
answers. Meanwhile lots of foreign scholars has classified
riddle by referring to world studies from
19
century in
different European languages, but as initial and pioneering
work is considered the one of American
folklorist
A. Taylor,
which in his study regarding riddle "English Riddles from
Oral Tradition", accentuated relevant differences between
real riddles and others, as well detailed classification of
schemes. He made basic categories of riddles in the system
of classification based on nature of description. Other
scholars working on this genre were basing on Taylor's'
classification. Meanwhile, regional scholars on oral
composition mainly supported thematic classification of
riddles. Hence we can emphasize that classification problem
is of particular complexity. This problem should be
considered both, from practical and theoretical perspective.
The classification I made in this study was due to the fact
that Albanian oral riddles are mainly of category of real
riddles, a notion which was supported and acknowledged
Leontina Gega-Musa · 267
internationally, but also due to the fact that this riddle is
more present in our oral composition which has a structure
built from posed descriptive question and the answer.
Along with real riddles are also evident popular
puzzles/enigmas, problem enigmas and question answers,
which in their structure hold a part of similarity with riddles
even though they do differ according to the form and the
object reckoned in. Similarity is obvious also in common
entertaining elements they have toward recipient, as well as
in exercising of intuition; thus these compositions can be
ranked as riddle types in general.
*
Regardless riddles short, dense structure, its text
represents a compact thought with harmonized poetic
structure. This genre holds within entire general
characteristics of oral composition; however the riddle has
peculiar structural characteristics that make this genre
distinguishable from other genres of compositions. First,
riddle has binaristic form as characteristic, a two part
expression consisting from question and the answer. Its two
part structure creates a close relation and makes one
semantic ensemble., Furthermore riddle differs from other
oral compositions by partaking of two subjects during the
act of its presentation, which means not only the one who is
putting it forward but also active partaking of the receiver,
without whom the riddle would remain without an answer,
which is a component element. This is a reason why some
scholars defined:the riddle as dialog between the presenter
of the riddle and the receiver, thus the one who answers.

Summary
Through dialog in the riddles is created essential ambiguity,
with a purpose of discovering and of hiding its subject at the
same time. An element helping realization of
communication between participants is
a cliché
question as
a formula which is encountered at the beginning or at the
end of the riddle. Most frequent forms: of these questions
are: "What is one thing", "what's a", "What's a riddle", "Do
you know a thing", "What's one and whets two" etc.
The riddle is distinguished by its variantity, which is a
common characteristic of oral composition, however
obvious also in this genre. Large miscellaneousity of riddles
looks like to be imposed by miscellaneousity of cultural
functions by
cliché
forms, nevertheless they were constantly
testified as quite stable and
fitt
to preserve linguistic,
mithological and spiritual elements.

While scholar
A. Jolies
sees the
;
riddle as two part
structure, the scholar Elli
Köngäs
Maranda sets in from the
fact that the riddle, as a structural unit is always compund
of two components that are descriptive part and the answer.
This scholar distinguishes five elements in elementary
structure of the riddle. First element,
ѓ
is visible public
element and is considered the
esence
of figurative part of
the riddle; second element, is the permanent message as
significant part; fourth element, is public alterable message
and serves as a hint for an answer. These elements are
presented by the one who presents the riddle. Meanwhile,
third element is hidden alterable message, it informs
listener that something is not quite as figurative part of the

riddle expresses, and it's also a reminder for the one who ¿is
answering and thus causes the fifth element that is the
hidden term, or the answer of the listener.

have also tried through structural analyses to come to more
exact definition of this genre prevalent in different world's
cultures. However, what is consistent is the fact that the
riddle has a peculiar structure by its short form, with a

thematic-motive abundance in poetical sense elaborated in
particular manner. In this aspect the riddle doesn't consist

surround people and their mundane. Thematic of riddles is

However, thematic ofg hidden objects that

The poetics of ridlle- Summary
discovered is much broader and miscellaneous than the
object that needs to be discovered itself. This is noticed
from figurative system of riddles, through which it's
presented as much broader than the answer. Thematic
object of riddles comes out from richness of the universe
surrounding human. Thus in riddles can be noticed
thematic circles, starting from the objects surrounding us to
those more distant. Human and his surrounding
environment form most extended thematic circle of oral
riddles. Thematic matter of the riddle thus is human life, as
well as all its stages, human activities and its
preoccupations, customs, beliefs and in a word everything
that surrounds human and consist his life.
Another characteristic of the riddle is its rich
figurative language, which makes this short text so attractive
for receiver. Language of oral riddle functions through
semantic figures, which are bearers of additional meanings
of act, in order to be able that through only one linguistic
sign name and understand more widely, especially with
metaphor and metonymy on which the riddle is build. Thus
the riddle has been seen as metaphorical compound,
which's usage highlights things and phenomenon features of
similarity or difference. By analyzing corpus of oral riddles
used in this research, it was ascertained that the largest
number of them are built in metaphorical form, where
abstract idea is replaced by a concrete figure, which leaves
stronger impression then simple comparison. The presence
of metaphor in a riddle makes it rise in higher poetic level.
Leontina
Gega-Musa
Thus we have said that riddles can be analyzed, treated and
deciphered also as metaphors.
:.-''*
,.νΛ*
Epithet is also one of the mops frequent figures in the
riddles, through which is accentuated an essential necessary
feature of a thing or phenomenon. Even though in our oral
composition epithets are various, in riddles mainly of lyrical
field, metaphorism is expressed through attribute, thus
through metaphorical epithet.
* *;'.
Yj
In oral riddles very often are met examples of
composition with the figure of metonymy, which appears as
bearer of the group of figures according to imminence,
neighborhood, and ambiguity. Furthermore in our oral
riddles emerge other semantic figures such as: comparison,
synecdoche, personification, contrast etc.
'
It happens for these figures, to appear in the riddles
singularly, but at most there are present several semantic
figures in just one* riddle, complementing each other in
perfect way in order for receiver to come as easy as possible
to the required answer: Thus the language of the riddles is
quite similar with written poetic language!'As much as the
language of the riddles is in concern, American linguists and
folkbrists
Pepicello and Green has
;
claimed that
communication of the riddle is "an evidenced artful
(deceitful) communication". The riddle as artistic form has
semiotic,
esthetic and grammatical thematic content, which
make this oral composition have relatively complex
syntaxes. Riddle language of our oral composition is
completely traditional language, not only in their meaning,

passing, if not completely, they have been over fulfilled as

enigmas. If we consider aspect of text in enigmas
without an answer, we will notice that it has structure of a
story, where are present one or more personages with their
functions which are a characteristic of prose genres.
Since antiquity, the riddles have been used for
development of mental resourcefulness and for this reason
they were so much present in different rituals and festivities.
This ancient genre of oral composition, together with lots of
other functions it had in the past, continued ceaselessly to
conserve educational function, in order to achieve through
this function of a riddle to broaden more complete and
general knowledge on reality. The riddle seeks the truth in
nature and society, while in human thought brings rich
information on different life aspects. Hence, by losing its
mythical and ritualistic function, the riddle remains in the
function of incitement and measurement of logics and
intelligence, however by always preserving entertaining
character and of game mainly in the relation to children.
Therefore lots of child poets has used oral riddle in order to
find new possibilities of poetic communication with
children. But, while in oral riddles after posed question
there is expected an answer from a child, in child poetry of
enigmatic character the answer is understood after the
reading of several verses. Here the small reader enters
