THE POPULATION OF WARSAW
IN THE 20TH CENTURY (SUMMARY)
The monograph presents development, distribution, natural and migration
movement of the Warsaw population, as well as its demographic, social and reli¬
gious composition over the course of the 20th century, for the city as a whole and
if possible for individual districts. Unfortunately, in this work, not all of the issues
and periods related to that topic have been dealt with in accordance with their
significance, mainly because of lack of statistical data, which either had not been
compiled or processed. Such issues included, for instance, population education
in
1931,
natural and migration movement of population in the postwar decade
and foreign migration in the 1950 s and 60 s.
Warsaw entered the 20th century as an administrative centre of a Russian
gubernia
with
686,000
inhabitants. Its rapid growth during the last two decades
of the 19th century was such that at the territory of Russian controlled Poland it
was second only to a booming city of
Łódź
at that time. When Poland regained its
independence, Warsaw obtained the capital city status, which was lost again dur¬
ing the Nazi occupation throughout World War II, and then restored after the lib¬
eration, in May
1945.
Contrary to the World War I, which affected the city popula¬
tion growth only to a minor degree, the damage inflicted on its population by Nazi
occupants during WWII was huge. Some
685,000
to
729,000
of its inhabitants
lost their lives, including extermination of almost all the Warsaw Jews population,
which in
1938
constituted
29,1%
of the total number of city residents. After the
period of an extremely dynamic increase in the number of Warsaw residents in the
first postwar months, its further growth was much slower, and only in the first
quarter of
1970
the Warsaw population reached the same size as in
1938.
In total,
during the 20th century the number of Warsaw inhabitants rose almost two and
a half times, from
686,000
to
1,689,000
in
2002,
but, at the same time, its area
increased by
15
times, from
33.5
to
501.2
km2 (excluding the area of the Vistula
River). The surrounding areas were incorporated to the capital city eleven times,
just as many times as the administrative division of Warsaw has been changed.
Enormous changes took place in the natural movement of population. Birth
rate, high at the end of the 19th century, amounting to
45
births per
1000
396
Ludność Warszawy w
XX
wieku
people, declined thereafter to reach, at the end of the 20th century a low level of
7%o. At the same time mortality rates have increased slightly. As a result since
1987
Warsaw has been characterized by a negative growth rate. A high infant
mortality continued at the rate of
200
deaths per
1000
live births into the first
decade of the 20th century. Eventually, as a result of a gradual general social
progress it declined significantly at he end of the 20th century and reached the
rate of a few deaths per
1000
live births. Age structure of the Warsaw population
experienced a significant changes. In
1897,
an average population age amount¬
ed to
25,9
years, in
1931
it rose to
29.9,
in
1950
and
1960
it slightly exceeded
32
years, in
1970
it was
35.9,
in
1978 - 36.7,
in
1988 - 37.8
and in
2002
it
equaled
40.9
years. Over the century, an average age of Warsaw resident rose
by
15
years. A significant social progress can also be attested by an average life
expectancy at birth, which between
1931
and
2003
rose from
50.8
to
72.6
for
men and from
56.2
to
79.8
for women, respectively. Changes in the gender struc¬
ture of the Warsaw population were being shaped by wartime events. The usual
slight numerical superiority of females in the population occurring in cities was
disturbed in the beginning of the 20th century by the presence of the Russian
armed forces. After World War I it rose to
122
females per
100
males, and then
in the following years it slightly fell to
119
per
100
in
1939.
Huge wartime loss¬
es among males caused that in
1946
the ratio of females to males was
141
per
100,
and in
1950
this ratio fell to
127
per
100.
For the last three decades, the
feminization ratio has been steady, continuing at the level of
114-116
females
per
100
males.
The population education structure has seen revolutionary transformations,
predominantly as regards women education. In
1897,
only
0.98%
of the Warsaw
population aged
10
years and more had higher education qualifications
- 1.6%
of men, and merely
0.05%
of women. In absolute numbers it meant that
4,252
men, part of which were czarist military men and officials, and just
125
women
graduated from higher education institutions. In independent Poland, in
1929,
the share of men with higher education was
6.3%
and that of women equaled
1.6%
(aged
10
years and more). After World War II the question on the level of
population education was for the first time included in the population census
of
1960.
In Warsaw, the share of men with higher education, aged
14
years and
more, doubled, reaching
15%,
but that of women rose fourfold, to
6.4%.
A dec¬
ade later, in
1970,
there was
16.6%
of men and
8.1%
of women who had high¬
er education (aged
15
years and more). Another significant growth in the share
of population having higher education qualifications, especially among women,
occurred in the years
1971-1988
(for
1978
data on education by gender are not
available). Thus, the share of women doubled, reaching
16.2%,
and that of men
rose to
23.2%.
Over the last fourteen years
(1989-2002)
women were still ahead
of men in getting the higher education qualifications. In
2002,
the share of wom¬
en (aged
13
and more) with higher education was
22.3%,
being almost at equal
with the share of men acquiring that level of education
(24.8%).
In total, Warsaw
with
23.4%
of population with higher education qualifications came third among
Polish urban centres, behind
Podkowa Leśna
(33.4%)
and Sopot
(23.9%),
and
ahead of
Piaseczno
(21.6%).
Summary
397
The census questions on birth place and place of current residence permit
to establish the degree of residential stability. Warsaw demonstrates a fairly sta¬
ble participation of population domiciled there from birth. In
1897
it represented
52.6%,
and then in the subsequent years the percentage values were as follows:
1921 - 55.8%, 1970 - 52.4%, 1978 - 54.9%, 1988 - 58.7%
and finally for
2002
- 52.7%.
Compared to other Polish urban centres Warsaw is characterized by a modest
participation of population resident there from birth
—
the extreme participation
values for other cities/towns as of
2002
range on the one hand from an extreme¬
ly low residential stability of population, as is the case for Borne-Sulinowo
(9.4%)
and
Podkowa Leśna
(25.8%)
to, on the other hand, the exceptionally high one for
inhabitants of
Skała
town
(83.3%)
located in the near vicinity of
Kraków.
Among
the cities with more than hundred-thousand inhabitants, the lowest residential
stability is the main feature of
Olsztyn
(41.1%),
Zabrze
(44.2%)
and
Opole
(44.6%),
whereas
Kalisz
(68.9%),
Radom
(67.8%)
and
Łódź
(65.8%)
are marked by the high¬
est one. As regards
Kraków,
the former capital of Poland, the degree of residential
stability
(57.1%)
is comparable with that of Warsaw.
It may be expected that further moderate development of the city of Warsaw
will go on due to a migration inflow of young and well educated population attract¬
ed by well-paid jobs, whereas, at the same time, there will be steady outflow of old¬
er well-to-do generation, moving to their own houses built in the attractive towns
and villages outside Warsaw.
