Summary
The study consists of an introduction, two parts, conclusions, ap¬
pendixes and lists of sources and literature. The first part describes
Christian chants in general. This part aims at presenting Christian
hymnody and its tradition as a phenomenon out of which Lithua¬
nian (Christian) chants originated as a natural branch. The second
part tells about Lithuanian Catholic chants and hymn books of

8th century, their development and structure, spread, perception of
the world and thematic features. Appendixes at the end of the work
consist of the catalog Lithuanian Catholic chants of

and also two lists with Polish and Latin titles of chants.
The first Christian chants originated in the days of early Chris¬
tianity and it was an inseparable part of spiritual life in the Christian
community. In the Middle ages chants made up the base of church
poetry. The first known authors of chants date back to the 3 rd cen¬
tury. In

centuries Christian hymnody underwent a big change:
Gregory the Great reformed church singing. In the 10th century, in
addition to official liturgical church singing, new forms

were introduced and became very popular in

turies. Christian chants in national languages started emerging in the

century. Polish hymnody, having influenced the Lithuanian one,
originated in the 13 th century and in the 16th century the tradition of
Polish chants had already been formed. The development of the hym¬
nody in general and especially the development of chants in national
languages were greatly influenced by Council of Trent which pointed
out in its resolutions to cherish Gregorian chant. The resolutions of
the Council were widely put into practice by the Jesuits who spread
the theory of Gregorian chant, taught chant singing, collected chant
repertory, and compiled hymn books.

Since the coming of the Christian hymnody, chants were va¬
lued from the spiritual and practical point of view. The chants were
considered as means of expressing joy and means of glorifying and
worshiping God. The use of chant singing was being advocated in
every possible way: emotional strenghening of the singing person,
peace of soul, and hope of life. This tradition of chant appreciation
was continued by Lithuanian authors who basically saw the purpose
of the chants the way previous authors did.
Lithuanian Christian chants in Lithuania are thought to be origi¬
nate after the introduction of Christianity and in all probability from
the times of the second christening of Lithuania. Lithuanian Catholic
hymnody dates back to Katekizmas
(1595)
written by Mikalojus
Daukša
and containing the first two Lithuanian Catholic chants in
it. The first Lithuanian Catholic hymn book
Giesmés tikèjimui
ka¬
toličkám priderančios
was written by Saliamonas
Slavočinskis
and
published in
1646.
The hymn book consisted of translations of Polish
and Latin chants. The hymn book was being used in compiling later
Lithuanian Catholic hymn books. A more intensive publication of
chants dates back to the publication of Catechism written by Roberto
Bellarmino in
1677.
The Catechism also contains a small collection
of chants. The chants used in the book were translated from Latin
and Polish,
Slavočinskis
hymn book was used as well. Afterwards
the book was being used in preparation of later editions. The second
Lithuanian Catholic hymn book Balsas
širdies
was written by Pran-
ciškus
Srubauskis and published around
1679.
The basis of this book
consisted of: earlier Lithuanian publications, a few newly translated
chants and a few original chants. Later this hymn book was used in
compiling other collections and publications containing chants of the
period being researched in this study. The third

and the last

hymn
book of the research period was published in
1765
and it was called
Giesmés

Švenčiausia
Pana
Marija .
They used
Šrubauskis
hymn book and Polish texts of the 18th century in that publication.
Later chants from this hymn book were used in other publications.
A number of old and new chants were published in various editions
containing chants in them. Those were prayer-books, books descri¬
bing lives of the saint, and publications focusing on brotherhood

needs. From the time period which is being analysed here, there are
just two manuscrips existing and one small manuscript collection of
chants taken out of the collection of sermons Contiones Litvanicae,
compiled around
1720.
The origin of the Lithuanian Catholic

century chants
is questionable. The problem comes from the Middle ages and is
typical of baroque religious Catholic literature. Its essence is to be
uncommitted about the authorship and the origin of the chants.
Not a single Lithuanian Catholic

8th century hymn book nor
any other publications give the names of the authors. Translations
are not always exact equivalents of the text, they often are just para¬
phrases or descriptions but at the same time the name of the original
source or the first line is given. Later when the chants were included
into other hymn books, they usually were edited quite a bit. All of
these factors add more complications to the research and questions
of origin and authorship of Lithuanian Catholic chants become very
difficult to answer.
From the literary point of view Lithuanian Catholic chants of the
17-1
8th centuries are asscribed to the literature of Baroque epoch. In
Lithuanian Catholic chants of this time period one can distinguish a
few baroque (literary) aspects, such as didactics, traditions of Middle
ages, and contrast. The didactic side of the chants of the religious lite¬
rature is conveyed through one of the most typical functions, trying to
teach people dogmatic elements, exciting religious feelings, providing
examples from life which are worth to follow, and inducing devotion.
Different means of literary expression are being utilized to realize the
didactic aspect of the chants: people s mind is being influenced with
the help of visual images and didactic stories. Features of the baroque
chants of the Middle ages are the following: tendency to allegory,
panegyrical nature, and naturalistic description. Contrast is being
conveyed through the
dualistic
understanding of the world.
In many aspects the baroque nature of the chants is related to
other thematic features of the chants in
16-і
8th century. One can
distinguish motives of sinfulness and kindness, motives of love, suf¬
fering, joy, and death, motives which relate the world of chants and
their characters with the real world. In the chants of Baroque period

through the themes of a sinfull man and merciful God the concept
of redemption of one s fault is being rendered. The most important
sensuous God s relationship with the man described in the chants is
mutual love, which is the foundation of all feelings. The chants of
this time period reveal the conception of death which is important to
the perception of the world in Baroque epoch. In some chants you
can find one or the other evidence of life, such as historical event,
holy places, etc.
