WAR TRAUMA AND
MORAL
REASONING VI
Detrimental effects of war on individuals, ranging from increased feelings of hatred
and revenge to increased stress and aggression as well as various types of psy-
chopathology have been already documented in many studies including a study
(Haskuka
2001)
which showed that exposure to war had a very strong negative ef¬
fect on higher cognitive processes, namely moral reasoning. The present study
tries to assess the nature and mechanism of the adverse effects of war exposure
on moral reasoning. Specifically the study analyses whether traumatic events, exis¬
tence of post traumatic symptoms, anxiety and depression, feelings of hatred and
revenge influence the postconventional moral reasoning. As attachment may medi¬
ate the resilience and vulnerability toward developing psychological problems at¬
tachment styles were also investigated to analyze their mediation. Through an
extensive survey of students at the University of Prishtina the following hypotheses
were tested: Number of traumatic events will have negative effect on principled rea¬
soning scores. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) will have negative effect on
principled reasoning scores. Anxiety will have negative effect on moral reasoning.
Depression will not have any effect on moral reasoning. Attachment style will mod¬
erate the effects trauma and psychological problems on moral reasoning. Present
study validates some of the hypothesis and assumptions about the relationship be¬
tween psychological problems created by traumatic events and cognitive functions,
namely postconventional moral reasoning. Number of psychological problems cre¬
ated by traumatic events has a negative relationship with postconventional moral
reasoning. Study also provides limited support for the mediation role of attachment
representation on how the psychic trauma relates to moral reasoning
