The Oral Personal Narrative
RESUME
In the Contemporary folklore studies is known a specific
genre called Oral Personal Narrative. This genre is based
on the personal experience of narrator, has its creativeness,
is narrated in the first singular, is not directly based in the
tradition, is influenced from the outside circumstances,
expresses the emotions of the narrator and needs the
careful listeners to hear and to understand it. This genre,
like others, was reacted as well as accepted by different
researchers and scholars until its place was finally located
in Folkloristics. In nineteenth century when the awareness
for folklore was built, the narrative genres that were
searched, collected and studies were mostly those with the
fantastic element within which transmitted by generations.
The oral genres which are treated as folklore ought to be
traditional, to have the fantastic element within and to be
transmitted orally. Even that folklorists have found in the
field the narrative with realistic elements, that express an
personal experience without a traditional transmission,

those weren t considered as folklore, although some of
them recorded it as such. But this narrative genre wasn t
treated more than memories. In the beginning those
narratives were called memorates, chronicates, life stories,
local histories etc. The presence of historical element
inside them has excluded them from folklore while
approaching to history. In the other side the connection
with history wasn t permanence. Because they are based
on emotion, evocation and the imagination of narrator,
history has resisted the factual truth that those narratives
might offer, hereupon the historians who have based their
studies on oral sources weren t consider very persuasive.
In the beginning of the last century some folklorists
started to give some importance those oral genres, by con¬
sidering them as oral narrative and the versions of perso¬
nal experience. The emotional part of the history that those
narratives brought started to be interested for folklorists.
When started to accept the imagination of narrator as
expression of man s soul, the originality of expression in
the moment of narrating, the indirect presence of tradition
expressed through inherited sayings, concepts, and ideas
of narrator, the dramatic plot of the event, the implicated
verity of the narrated event, folklorists started the debate
for accepting this genre in Folkloristics. The first scholars
who gave serious character of studying for the personal
narrative were William Labov and Joshua Valetzky and
later Sandra
Dolby-Stahl,
who wrote a monograph for
such oral genre in the same calling for first time
—
the Oral
Personal Narrative. Later them accompanied number of
narratologists, which more and more were giving support
for the place of personal narrative in folklore then history.
The history field based on oral sources is called Oral
history and the oral tradition is inseparable part of oral

sources. The oral personal narrative might be treated better
if we observe it in the context of oral historiography. The
historical events and their affection on the individual fate
produce the oral personal narrative. The oral personal
narrative is the result of connection between oral tradition
and history.
Like in other world folkloristics, in our folkloristic
this oral genre wasn t accepted as part of oral creativity
and as study subject for folklorists. The Albanian folk-
lorists even that this material has found in the field always
had qualified as memoirs. In Albanian terrain side with
fantastic genres were collected two types of oral genres
with the topic from reality. Those are Short Tale and Folk
Realist Story. The characteristics that qualify those both
genres are very close with oral personal narrative thus if
we compare them will see that they differ very little. Ba¬
sed on some deeper analyses we arrived to the fact that
Oral Personal Narrative is a new genre in Albanian Folk¬
loristics.
Coming to the complete definition of this genre we
ought to use the materials from the field. First we identi¬
fied this genre in the filed and than we had to collect.
After not an easy job for identifying the narrators we had
to start working with them. This genre is based much on
personal information and on inner world of the creators, so
wasn t so easy to eject the personal world of the narrators.
Each narrative is very special, presents the personal world
of the individual with all its particularities. After collec¬
ting a number of oral personal narratives by recording
them, follows the second faze of the work, transcription.
During transcription the main problems were the issue
respecting or not the linguistic dialect of narrators and the
discovering or not of their identity. About the linguistic

issue we decided to respect the local dialect speech. This
decision was for the needs of Folkloristics and for better
presentation of the oral personal narrative components.
And about the identity issues, even which most of the
narrators signed for uncovering identity, we choose to
cover it. In this way we considered the easier way for
analyzing and studying of the materials in this account.
After we provided both sources of those substance,
oral and written, we treated, analyzed and studies that.
Based on theories, concepts and methods that were done
for this genre until now on world folkloristics, we tried
that Albanian substance to observe on the scope of world
studies.
The basic matter that have served us for considering
the oral genre of personal narrative as part of Albanian
oral tradition, were twenty life stories of old people on
their seventies, eighties and nineties from the
Kosova
citi¬
es, Gjakova and Prizren. Their memory is based on
personal experiences conditioned by historical circumstan¬
ces such as: Slavic invasion of
Kosova,
free and interrup¬
ted relations with state of Albania in different periods of
time, the Second World War and the influence of fascism
and communism in daily life of the inhabitants of these
cities, the educational circumstances before and after the
Second World War etc. In the same time the narratives ha¬
ve offered data and experiences that connect with material
and moral traditions and the heritage of this tradition until
the time when they spoke.
We approached the personal narratives in aspect of
decomposing the identity, so an biographic approach, in
aspect of decomposing the order of sentences while collo¬
quialism, the linguistic approach as well as an psycho-

biographic approach, by attempting that through specific
episodes of the narrative to analyze the psycho-emotional
status of those narrators, always linked with their biogra¬
phy. We made decomposing of the personal identity thro¬
ugh identification of respective group of each person. The
group categories that we explore by the individual were;
family, the ethnic pertinence, religion, living place, age,
sex, social category and profession. The linguistic appro¬
ach toward personal narrative enabled us to drag out from
the oral texts main sentences that construct the flow of the
event, depended sentences which don t oppose the narra¬
tive even that we depart the from the entire text, the key
sentences and the other types of the sentences that consti¬
tute the narrative structure. In part of decomposing the
personal narratives through psycho-biography of the narra¬
tors we attempt to drag out and analyze some episode from
the narratives.
We approached the personal narratives in aspect of
narrative structure and functioning of the memory during
the process of narrating, as well. Starting from the concept
that structure of personal narratives is
multi
episodic; the
possibility for analyzing the narrative structure is through
the episodes. Narrative structure of the personal narrative
contents introduction, orientation, action, evaluation, deci¬
phering and coda (the moral).
The study object for the following chapters is con¬
tent of the personal narratives. Through those stories is
attempted to be interpretation of history and tradition. Ba¬
sed on the effects that history had on the life of those
people, which often gave the orientation of their life, we
attempt to interpret the history through their personal life
stories. Observed from the individual perspective, history,
almost always was harsh. For many narrators, whose life

was
influenced directly from the historical circumstances,
their personal narratives express the emotional part of the
history. Facing with the jurisdiction, which for Albanians
were always stranger, has produced experiences from the
most different and those were reflected in the creative
world of the inhabitants in these zones, by giving chance
for creating personal narrative as reflections of personal
experience.
Except the possibility for interpreting the personal
narrative, so except dealing with oral text and its tran¬
scription, we treated the narrator and the audience as well.
Although analyzing of personal narrative is inevitable,
because the biographic element and the life and experience
of the narrator is expressed while interpretation, we obser¬
ved the role of the narrator in interactive relation with the
listener/audience. On an oral performance, there are in
continuous relations the narrator and the audience and the
idiosyncrasy of the creativity in one moment is closely
related between them. Audience might be at least one lis¬
tener and for personal narrative is preferred to be one. The
expressiveness of narrators is depending from the au¬
dience category as well as the connections with him/her.
Having a chance to consult the rich and used litera¬
ture of world folkloristics, as well as having a chance to
apply it on twenty Albanian oral personal narratives, we
consider that offered for Albanian student and scholar an
attractive and indispensable material for intriguing to send
further the Albanian Folkloristics.
