Resumé
The Roudnice
Incunabula
and the Library
of
Bohuslav
Hasištejnský
of
Lobkowicz
The catalogue aims to fulfil two tasks, which to a considerable degree
overlap: to record the preserved volumes of the library of the Czech poet
Bohuslav Hasištejnský
of Lobkowicz as well as to catalogue all the in¬
cunabula of the Lobkowicz library in Roudnice. The reason is that in this
library, which was being established by the princely Lobkowicz family
at their castle in Roudnice n.
Labem
from the 17th century and which is
now deposited and made accessible to the public at another castle of the
Lobkowicz family, in Nelahozeves (north of Prague), a significant part of
the famous Humanistic library of their ancestor from the
Hasištejn
branch
of the family, whose roots go back to the end of the 14th century, has
been preserved. The catalogue simultaneously describes the individual
items from Bohuslav's library which have been successfully identified
in other libraries.
Dr
Emma
Urbánková
(1909-1992),
a long-time head of
the Manuscript and Early Printed Books Department of the present-day
National Library of the Czech Republic in Prague and an important spec¬
ialist in the field of early Bohemian book printing spent years preparing
the catalogue. Owing to the greater number of projects on which she was
working, however, she was never able to complete it.
The Roudnice holdings contain a total of
132
incunabula of other than
Hasištejn
provenance. A greater part of them was acquired by the Lob¬
kowicz family in the second half of the 17th century and in the course of
the 18th century. More than
69
percent come from printing workshops in
the German-language area,
27
percent from Italy (almost all from Vene¬
tian workshops),
2.25
percent from France (specifically with only
Lyon
represented) and
1.5
percent from Bohemian book-printing production,
represented by two books printed in Prague. They also contain several
cimelia, firstly the vellum exemplar of the so-called 48-line Bible from the

workshop of
Johann
Fust and Peter
Schöffer,
which was probably pur¬
chased by the Cistercian Riddagshausen monastery near Braunschweig
immediately after being printed in
1462,
and the first edition of the Ger¬
man version of
Dürer's
Apocalypse from
1498.
Bohuslav Hasištejnský
of Lobkowicz was most likely born in
1461.
Like
other sons from Catholic families, he left to pursue his studies abroad.
First it was at the famous University of Bologna from
1475,
and in
1481
he
transferred to the University of
Ferrara,
where he was later granted the
degree of Doctor of Canon Law at the end of November
1482.
He became
captivated by Humanistic Studies and began to devote himself to writing
Latin poetry. He most probably returned to Bohemia the next year. In
Bohuslav's life, periods which he spent in the country more or less in se¬
clusion, predominantly at the family castle
Hasištejn
in the
Krušné Hory
Mountains, alternated with periods when he endeavoured to gain a posi¬
tion in the civil or ecclesiastical administration. Following the example of
other Humanists, also he wanted to offer his talent and knowledge to the
services of his homeland, whose current state he himself lamented, and
to build his personal career. At the turn of
1487/88,
he left for the court in
Prague, where he worked as a secretary of
Władysław II Jagiełło.
Foreign
sodalities are very likely to have inspired him to gather several friends
and peers around himself from the ranks of young officials who were in¬
terested in studies in the Humanities like he was. He spent the years
1490
and
1491
on a long study trip around the Mediterranean, from whence he
is supposed to have brought a number of Greek manuscripts. Bohuslav's
candidature for the position of the Bishop of
Olomouc
was then taking a
long time. Despite his having been elected by the chapter and the inter¬
cession of influential dignitaries on his behalf in Rome, in the end Pope
Alexander VI appointed his nephew Giovanni Borgia in
1493,
who later
yielded the Episcopal See to Stanislaus Thurzo. In spring
1502,
he left for
the royal court of
Władysław II Jagiełło
once more, which had moved to
Buda,
where a number of important Central-European Humanists were
active, but in the end he remained working there for only roughly one
year and returned to
Hasištejn
in May
1503.
Thereafter he no longer as¬
pired to any other posts and devoted himself to his literary activities and
a private Humanistic school, where he taught the sons of his late brother
Mikuláš
and gifted young men from the area.
Bohuslav Hasištejnský
of
Lobkowicz died in November
1510.
The extensive correspondence and
above all his poetic work rather than prosaic papers bear witness to the
exceptional literary talent of
Bohuslav Hasištejnský.
A total of
757
printed books from the property of
Bohuslav Hasištejnský
(out of which approximately
575
are incunabula) have been successfully
found and described in the catalogue. Apart from them,
18
Latin manu¬
scripts, the same number of Greek manuscripts and a bulky Hebrew Pen¬
tateuch are known to us, which are mostly deposited in the holdings of
_148
The Roudnice
Incunabula and the Library of
Bohuslav Hasištejnský
of Lobkowicz-
the
Roudnice
Lobkowicz Library. They contain
110,500
printed leaves, i.e.
221,000
pages, and around
16,000
manuscript pages. There are
35
years
between Bohuslav's arrival in Italy, where he probably soon began the
purchases, and his death in the autumn of
1510.
We can thus easily calcu¬
late that he would have had to read eighteen and a half pages every day.
Considering the fact that roughly one quarter of Bohuslav's library has
not been preserved, we can ascertain that he would have had to manage
to read almost
25
pages a day. Arranged in a row, the preserved volumes
alone fill
35
metres of shelves.
On the edges of Bohuslav's books, designations are written along the
length with a significantly truncated name of the author and title. It is
possible to recognise six hands in total, which always created this aid for
searching for a relevant volume at certain intervals following each other
and which can be assigned to persons who attended to the library for
Bo¬
huslav
already beginning at the time of his studies in Italy. In addition,
shelf marks are written in Arabic numerals across the upper parts of the
front edges, which clearly proves that the books in Bohuslav's library did
not lie on shelves but were already standing with their front edges turned
outwards. This allotting of shelf marks followed the original arrangement
of the books at the castle and was done in a single hand, most likely not
until the creation of the inventory of the property after Bohuslav's death
(low shelf-mark numbers also appear on the printed books which were
not acquired until the last years of Bohuslav's life). They thus are not a
type of ascending sequence of acquisition numbers, which would make it
possible now retrospectively to determine the chronology of the acquisi¬
tion of the individual items. That the shelf marks would not have been
allotted until later is contradicted by the fact that a group of
30
printed
books from the property of a doctor whose name is unknown to us has
remained without shelf marks on the edges. It probably augmented the
Hasištejn
Library after
1516
but on the other hand was included in its
catalogue and thus posthumously joined Bohuslav's books. A quality se¬
lection of works on medicine is complemented by only a few titles from
other areas, among which Italian printed books predominate, with also
German ones beginning to appear in greater numbers after
1500.
The very highest shelf-mark number, discovered on one of Bohuslav's
volumes, reached a respectable number of
626.
ш
addition, especially
some manuscripts with uneven edges have remained without shelf marks.
The library thus approximately contained almost
650
volumes at the time
of Bohuslav's death, with them frequently being binder's volumes com¬
prising more printed titles. We have succeeded in finding
455
volumes
with corresponding shelf marks on the edges. In reality, even fewer than
those
171
volumes have been lost, wliich is the number which we obtain
by subtracting the two values, because we have to include the
19
books of
the
Roudnice
Lobkowicz Library whose labelling as well as shelf marks
149_
-Rekonstrukce
knihovny Bohuslava Haslštejnského z Lobkovic
have disappeared as a result of trimming the inner block when it was be¬
ing rebound at the turn of the 19th century, and another
4
whose edges
have likewise been trimmed and which are deposited in other libraries
today, in whose case we reasonably suppose that they were a part of the
Hasištejn
Library and had originally been adjusted similarly. To sum¬
marise, fewer than
150
volumes have not survived the half a millennium
which separates us from the death of
Bohuslav Hasištejnský
of Lobkow-
icz, out of which almost
70
burnt in a fire in nearby
Chomutov
in
1525,
where they had been temporarily deposited after their return from Wit¬
tenberg, having been loaned to Luther, Melanchthon and other interested
persons there for study purposes by a nephew of
Bohuslav's, Zikmund
Hasištejnský,
the first legatee of the library. Thanks to the shelf-mark se¬
quence, we can determine relatively precisely that more than three quar¬
ters of Bohuslav's books have been preserved.
Approximately at the end of the second decade of the 16th century, a
catalogue was compiled, which was later printed in Prague by the edi¬
tor of the collected works of
Bohuslav Hasištejnský, Tomáš
Mitis, as a
part of the volume Appendix
poematum
in
1570.
Until the 20th century,
this catalogue of hardly any bibliographic quality and in many places
mutilated was the only source for the content of Bohuslav's library for
several generations of researchers which assumed that a greater part of
the library had ceased to exist. The catalogue is divided into sections by
subject. The finding that also the library was arranged by subject and that
most of these sections can be recognised also here in the catalogue is very
important:

Manuscript volumes were not separated out and were placed along
with printed books. Within the individual sections, books were arranged
in such a way that their size would roughly be the same in order to save
_150
The Roudnice
Incunabula and the Library of
Bohuslav Hasištejnský
of Lobkowicz-
space. Somewhere the group begins with large formats and proceeds to
smaller ones; somewhere it is the other way round. Considering the large
difference between the tallest (with some printed books reaching even
50
cm) and smallest volumes (namely some Aldines being only
16
cm high),
the shelves were probably not always of the same height either. It is not
known where exactly at
Hasištejn
the library was placed; most likely it
was in the so-called new palace, only a small part of which has been pre¬
served until today.
In the reconstructed collection, it is possible to find more than
150
printed books, which were probably acquired by
Bohuslav
no later than
the beginning of
1483
and which he brought already from his studies in
Italy. They are furnished with bindings of Italian provenance.
Bohuslav
was not at all fastidious about his books having a luxurious outer appear¬
ance. Already in Italy, he began furnishing them with a uniform and easy-
-to-maintain type of half-leather bindings, which he subsequently had
made also by two workshops in close vicinity to the castle
Hasiătejn.
The
first of them
(Kyriß,
No.
177)
produced almost three dozen bindings of
printed books for
Bohuslav
which he had bought at the conclusion of his
studies but had not managed to have bound in Italy, and also of the spo¬
radic acquisitions from the first years after his return. It used a sumptuous
blind-stamping
décor,
sometimes even the technique of leather carving.
Bohuslav
mostly had printed books sent in the form of loose-leaf books;
from the
mid-láSOs
to the end of his life, he would have them bound at
another workshop, which probably operated in the nearest town
Kadaň,
which belonged to
Bohuslav'
s
brother
Jan Hasištejnský.
Almost
314
of
the book bindings from the
Hasištejn
library which have been preserved
are the work of this bookbinder
(Kyriß,
No.
180).
In the second half of
the 1480s and in the first half of the 1490s, the workshop prepared only
bindings with undecorated covering materials for
Bohuslav,
only shortly
before the mid-1490s did it begin to apply blind-stamping decoration,
which quickly almost replaced the undecorated covering materials.
Like in Italy,
Bohuslav
began to require that also the bookbinder in
Kadaň
bind in a greater number of blank sheets of paper both at the front
and the end of the volumes, but he only rarely used them for his notes. He
wrote less and less even in the margins of his books. The printed books
which he brought as a young man from Italy still contain more numerous
marginalia, but there are hardly any in the printed books from the last
decade of Bohuslav's life. These were mostly marginalia of one word or a
few words of an index character/ with other notes being rare.
Manuscript volumes do not form even one-fifteenth in the preserved
part. Already in his youth,
Bohuslav Hasištejnský
preferred the printed
book. It is true almost without exception that he would procure a work in
a manuscript form only if it had not been published in a reliable printed
version by that time. The type of the Humanistic codex is in the minority
151_
JRekonstrukce
knihovny Bohuslava Hasištejnského z Lobkovic
among the
Latin
ones, with older manuscripts from the 14th and 15th cen¬
turies being prevalent. Neither was
Bohuslav
the type of bibliophile who
would be interested in amassing manuscripts which contained sumptu¬
ously implemented illuminations. Besides an old gospel-book from the
early 10th century and a Ficino anthology, which was copied and illum¬
inated in Florence around the mid-14905, illuminations appear in two
other manuscript
Bohémica
from around
1400.
The number of printed
books which are more richly illustrated by woodcuts is also quite limited.
The most frequent are illustrations accompanying specialised, in most
cases astronomical texts.
The
Hasištejn
Library stood out for its number of Greek manuscripts
and printed books. Such an extensive collection of Greek works was an
entirely exceptional phenomenon in the Czech lands at that time, and
also even in the area north of the Alps there were only few such large
collections.
Bohuslav
was extremely particular about collecting Greek ti¬
tles. Along with eighteen manuscripts, twenty-nine Greek printed books
have been preserved until today. Especially in the area of the Greek manu¬
scripts, we have to expect a higher number of deperdits, because many of
them were donated or loaned by the first legatees of the library and have
never returned to
Hasištejn. Bohuslav
was one of the first Czechs to study
Greek literature, already from his youth, directly from the originals. In the
case of ten Greek codices from the
Hasištejn
Library, the dating proves that
Bohuslav
could not have been their first owner. The earliest of them comes
from the 11th or 12th centuries. The others are later and were created in the
course of the 14th century and the first two-thirds of the following century.
Even from far-away
Hasištejn, Bohuslav
ordered the copying out of books
in Greek from a Cretan-Venetian scriptorium whose owner was the edu¬
cated Greek Aristobulos Apostolides
(1465-1535).
Six of Bohuslav's manu¬
scripts can be connected to his scriptorium. On the other hand, there is not
a single Czech-language or German-language printed book here.
Bohuslav
had in his library, with a small number of exceptions, only
printed books imported from Italy and German-speaking countries.
Among the printed books dateable into the 1470s,
Germanica
form only
three and a half percent, which is actually given also by the fact that he
was staying in Italy at that time, where he would buy books directly. Still
in the 1480s, the printed books from workshops of the German-language
area form only less than
17
percent, whereas in the 1490s their propor¬
tion already increases to
34.5
percent. Not until the first decade of the
16th century do
Germanica
prevail and form
58
percent. At that time,
even German typographers were already offering infinitely more titles
than before which could engage a reader of Bohuslav's type. A goodly
part of Bohuslav's library consisted of printed books which were either
not owned by anyone else in the Czech lands or were here only in a few
exemplars. From among more than a hundred printed books published in
_152
The Roudnice
incunabula and the Library of
Bohuslav Hasištejnský
of Lobkowicz
the famous printing workshop of Aldus Manutius in Venice between its
establishment in
1494
and Bohuslav's death, he owned almost four dozen.
Especially the Humanistically-focused production of Italian workshops
was not commonly available in higher number in the Czech lands at the
end of the 15th century, and those from the relatively narrow domestic
circle of Humanists who were interested thus had to exert greater effort
in order to acquire the relevant titles. As shown by the correspondence,
the probably main mediator for procuring printed books was Bohuslav's
friend and classmate from
Ferrara,
Bernhard
Adelmann (1459-1523),
who
served as a canon in
Eichstätt
and later simultaneously also in Augsburg.
Apart from him, a network of factors of the merchant house of the Fug-
gers helped
Bohuslav
procure books.
The Library of
Bohuslav Hasištejnský
of Lobkowicz is a library of an
intellectual, or perhaps more precisely of a bibliophile and intellectual.
It does not bear comparison with the most famous Italian Humanistic li¬
braries but is comparable with the most important private libraries in the
German-speaking countries of that time. The introductory study by no
means sets as its goal to provide a thorough analysis of the contents of
Bohuslav's library: it only attempts to point out in brief the width of the
scope of Bohuslav's reading. Already in Italy, he would intensively collect
philological works in his endeavour to deepen his knowledge of Latin.
He followed the production of contemporary Italian Humanists, within
which he was most interested in titles related to rhetoric and poetic art.
He was probably most engaged by Roman authors. With regard to his
studies, however, he also built a well-equipped law reference library.
Editions of Greek and Roman authors form slightly more than one-fifth
of the entire collection. More than every third is an editio princeps.
With regard to titles about which we know from the old catalogue of the
library, we can say that
Bohuslav
owned a practically complete collection
of the Roman classics known at his time. Apart from rhetoric, Bohuslav's
interest showed considerable preference chiefly for poetic works here. He
would also purchase their new editions, annotated by Italian, or German,
Humanists. When older, he focused more on complementing authors of
Late Antiquity and Early Christianity, who are abundantly represented
here. Another backbone of the
Hasištejn
Library was a collection of the
works of Humanists. It will fascinate again not only by its range but also
by the fact that
Bohuslav
managed, in great majority, to acquire the titles
already in their first editions. Also here can we notice his preferential in¬
terest for poetry, mainly lyrical, and poetic handbooks. Along with the
names of numerous Italian Humanists, the names of German Humanists
began to appear later, with the development of Humanistic Studies also
in the German-speaking countries. The
Hasištejn
Library also contains an
exquisite collection of the foremost representatives of mediaeval philo¬
sophical and theological thinking.

.Rekonstrukce knihovny Bohuslava Hasištejnského z Lobkovic
The reconstruction of the library has brought to light two strong pref¬
erences of
Bohuslav Hasištejnský
at which his interest was turned already
from his youth, which have however been connected with him only rather
marginally thus far. First of all, it is the section of astronomical titles, where
if also works of a more general natural-science character are included,
which were however a kind of starting point of knowledge, approximate¬
ly every ninth printed book owned by
Bohuslav
can be ranked. His library
contained practically everything important that was printed during his
life (and frequently again in the very first editions) from Ancient, Medi¬
aeval as well as Arabic astronomical science.
Bohuslav Hasištejnský'
s
sec¬
ond great interest was historiography. The shelves contained practically
all the historians of Antiquity as well as numerous Humanistic historians.
In the form of manuscripts, he procured some older, unpublished chroni¬
cles, be they Cosmas' Chronicle of Bohemians or the universal chronicle
by Otto of
Freising.
From a relatively early age, he began to create, besides
the law one, also a reference library comprised of essential medical com¬
pendia, which he around
1500
supplemented by a more detailed treatise
on the currently impending plague epidemics and syphilis. He, however,
evidently took pleasure in learning about also other areas, which can be
substantiated by titles on architecture, music, gastronomy, etc.
The Reconstruction of the Library of
Bohuslav Hasištejnský
of Lobko-
wicz is divided into two sections: the first contains descriptions of pre¬
served printed books while the second manuscripts. The first section has
numerus currens
in Arabic numerals, the second in Roman numerals. The
catalogue of printed books is ordered alphabetically based on the names
of authors of primary responsibility, or if the works are anonymous based
on the first nouns of their titles. If a printed book contains works of more
than one author, references have been inserted at relevant places. We
have used mostly Latinised and uniform forms of names, namely even in
the case of Greek authors and their works. Both incunabula and postincu-
nabula, published after
1500,
are included in one alphabetical sequence.
Descriptions of the printed books of the 15th century are based on fixed
rules. Since also later works are much closer to the form of incunabu¬
la than to the form of standardised (early) printed books as they were
gradually being formed during the first half of the 16th century, they are
processed in the same way. Neither the title from the title folio nor the
imprint is thus copied out in the form in which they are in the book but
are transposed into the usual modern form. Data on the place of issue, the
printer, or even the publisher, are given in the Latinised and uniform form,
and also the dating has been transferred into the modern form. If these
data are not contained directly in the imprints (or if imprints are entirely
_154
The Roudnice
Incunabula and the Library of
Bohuslav Hasištejnský
of Lobkowicz-
missing), they are supplied in square brackets based on the cited specialised
literature. In the collation section, the total number of leaves and a speci¬
fication of the signature gatherings of the whole printed book are given.
These are further followed by the basic bibliographical references for the
printed book in question. The unabridged version of the references can be
found in the list of selected cited literature, placed before the actual cata¬
logue section. The entry is concluded by the shelf mark of the exemplar
being described. Unless otherwise stated, it refers to the
Roudnice
Lob-
kowicz Library, and the researcher can thus find the book at the castle in
Nelahozeves. In the same alphabetical sequence, books deposited also in
other institutions today (mainly in the National Library in Prague, where
they mostly accumulated at the end of the
1920s,
along with the so-called
Prague Lobkowicz Library) are described. For the catalogue to be able to
fulfil its other function as well, though, the same alphabetical sequence
includes descriptions of also those
Roudnice
incunabula that are of other
than
Hasištejn
provenance, with their descriptions, however, being dif¬
ferentiated by their being in italic script (the whole issue is solved in a
similar fashion in the indexes or the list of pictorial supplements). In the
case of binder's volumes, the shelf mark is followed by the catalogue's
nu¬
merus
currens, namely: a) in the case of the first items, where the user can
find both the external description of the whole volume and references to
its individual parts, the shelf mark is followed by the
numerus
currens of
all the additional printed titles alligated to the first title, specifically in the
order in which they are in the binder's volume (not alphabetically); b) in
the case of the additional printed titles alligated to the first title, the shelf
mark is followed by the
numerus
currens of only the initial title. The user
can thus relatively easily gain information on the whole volume. Within
the books of the
Hasištejn
provenance, printed books coming from the
"doctor's" library which are not directly part of Bohuslav's library in the
stricter sense of the word have been differentiated. The
numerus
currens
of their entries has been complemented by a majuscule
L
(e.g.
551
-L).
The second section contains descriptions of Bohuslav's manuscripts. In
view of the fact that there is no collection catalogue of the
Roudnice
man¬
uscripts holdings available, codicological descriptions of manuscripts
are processed more thoroughly. In the specialised literature of the last
two centuries, some of them are cited frequently while others are practi¬
cally unknown. Others, despite being known, have had their
Hasištejn
provenance newly determined. On the other hand, descriptions of Greek
codices are shortened, because a union catalogue of Greek manuscripts
kept on the territory of the Czech Republic is available, which is always
referred to and in which a user can find a precise codicological analysis as
well as further bibliographical references.
Most of Bohuslav's books can be identified not based on the propri¬
etary notes, which do not appear here with some exceptions, but based
155_
Rekonstrukce knihovny Bohuslava Hasištejnského z Lobkovic
on typical external features, which, supported by the identification of the
book in question in Mitis' catalogue, are usually the main proof of the
Hasištejn
provenance: a shelf mark written in one hand and the same for¬
mal method of labelling on the edges, bindings coming predominantly
from two domestic workplaces, binding in of blank papers with the same
filigree watermarks, etc. In the descriptions, careful attention was thus
paid precisely to the individual features. The
Hasištejn
provenance is at
the same time evidenced by glosses written by
Bohuslav
himself, which
in the descriptions are again distinguished from notes written in other
hands. We have always tried to identify every volume in the so-called
Mitis' catalogue of the
Hasištejn
Library. We have given the respective
page as well as the lines on which the entry in question can be found
in the printed edition of this catalogue (in the case of binder's volumes,
the identification is given with the description of the first item). The en¬
tire original Mitis' edition is then reprinted in a photographic form in the
pictorial supplement (No.
68).
In the reproductions, the entries of books
which have been successfully identified although not always with com¬
plete certainty and which are thus described in the catalogue section are
graphically differentiated with their present shelf marks added in the
margins. Mainly brief entries can be linked with several preserved indi¬
vidual items (these are then usually interlinked through references in the
catalogue). At least a general idea on the titles of the
Hasištejn
Library
which have not been preserved has thus been formed, which will hope¬
fully help future researchers who will decide to investigate the content
structure of the library.
In the descriptions of the book bindings, we have primarily attempted
to differentiate bindings of Italian provenance and bindings of the two
workshops which systematically worked for
Bohuslav
in Bohemia. A part
of the description of their blind-stamping decoration are references to the
numbers of the tools used, namely of the individual stamps or rolls, whose
pencil rubbings have been reproduced in full in the pictorial supplements
Nos.
33-35.
These should help when tracing possible other volumes from
the
Hasištejn
Library, mainly in foreign institutions.
Work with the catalogue should be made easier by the following indi¬
ces:
1.
The typographical index is arranged primarily based on the Latin
forms of the places of issue, secondarily according to the names of the
individual printers. Books printed by the same workshop are arranged
chronologically, with the printed books of other than
Hasištejn
provenance
being differentiated (as in the case of other indices) by italics.
2.
The con¬
cordance of the numbers of the basic bibliographies and of the catalogue
provides a quick overview when searching for incunabula described in
this work based on their numeric citations in
Gesamtkatalog der Wiegen¬
drucke,
Hain's
Repertorium
bibliographicum, etc.
3.
The index of authors
and titles of the manuscript works and secondary authors of the printed
_156

of Lobkowicz-
works fulfils the function of the basic name index for the catalogue sec¬
tion of the manuscripts (and for manuscripts alligated to printed books)
and at the same time includes references to the names of the authors of
secondary responsibility of the catalogue section of printed books.
4.
The
provenance index contains the names of both persons and institutions
which owned or used the books described in this catalogue for some time.
5.
The language index has references to all the texts in languages other
than Latin.
6.
The penultimate index provides references to all the books
complemented with painted illuminations, be they ornamental or
figurai,
as well as references to printed books with woodcut decoration.
7.
The
concordance of book shelf-marks is divided into three sections: the first
one contains the shelf-marks of Bohuslav's volumes from the
Roudnice
Lobkowicz Library in ascending order, which are followed by their shelf
marks under which they are deposited at other institutions today. They
always contain a reference to the relevant number of the catalogue entry
(or in the case of the binder's volumes to a sequence of all the numbers)
and at the same time to the original
Hasištejn
shelf mark unless it was
trimmed when the volume was being rebound. Also
datations
of the indi¬
vidual volumes (in the case of the binder's volumes
datations
of the latest
items) as well as data on the provenance, and the appearance of the book
bindings and their decoration have been incorporated here synoptically.
In the second section, on the other hand, Bohuslav's books which have
been preserved are ordered based on the original
Hasištejn
shelf marks
with references to their shelf marks in the
Roudnice
Lobkowicz Library
or in other institutions. Also this section serves to help when searching
for other possible volumes, as it provides an overview of which volumes
with shelf marks have not been preserved. An inspection of the book edges
might help discover individual volumes from the famous library lying
as yet unidentified also in other collections. The italic typeset of the third
section points to the fact that only the shelf marks of
Roudnice
incunabula
of other than
Hasištejn
provenance have been included here with relevant
references to the numbers of the catalogue.
The aim of the pictorial supplement is not only to document important
incunabula, postincunabula, or manuscripts, namely of both
Hasištejn
and other provenance, which are described in this catalogue. It is not even
possible because of the vast extent of especially the first of both parts of
the catalogue. Nevertheless, the selected samples can still provide an idea
of for example the excellent typographic layout of the volumes from Bo¬
huslav's library even to a user who does not normally encounter printed
books from the 15th and the early 16th centuries. The manuscripts are
represented in a smaller number in the otherwise already extensive pic¬
torial supplement, because most of them have already been published
elsewhere. First of all, the supplement wishes to complete the image of
what the external appearance of Bohuslav's library would have been. It
157_
-Rekonstrukce
knihovny Bohuslava Hasištejnského z Lobkovic
reproduces typical examples of Italian bindings, goffered leather bind¬
ings, or blind-stamped bindings from both workshops which worked for
Bohuslav
in Bohemia. Various versions of Bohuslav's autograph as found
in his books should help when identifying records in his own hand in the
future. Also a greater number of unique photographs documenting the
actual reconstruction of the
Hasištejn
library by means of its original shelf
marks have been included. Last but not least, it contains (predominantly
historical) depictions of the residences in which Bohuslav's library (or its
parts) was deposited for some time.
