ZUSAMMENFASSUNG
Das vorliegende Buch ist der Geschichte der Breslauer Festung gewid¬
met, von der Besetzung der Stadt durch die preußische
Armée
1741 an
bis 1807, als nach ihrer Eroberung durch napoleonische Truppen die
Stadtbefestigungen zerstört wurden.
Die Arbeit besteht aus drei Hauptteilen. Der erste ist den
Fortifika¬
tionen
gewidmet. Ihre Beschreibung beginnt mit der Zusammenfassung
der Geschichte des Baus der neuzeitlichen Festung. Geschildert wurde
der erste Bastionärausbau der Festung vom Ende des 16. Jh.s, zu dessen
Zeit Objekte nach Regeln der alt- und neuitalienischen Manier errich¬
tet wurden, später wurde knapp die weitere Festungsmodernisierung
vom 17. Jh. nach Vorgaben der altniederländischen Schule beschrie¬
ben. Dann versuchte man den Zustand der Breslauer Festungsanlagen
im Moment ihrer Übernahme durch den preußischen Staat darzustel¬
len, um anschließend der Friedrichschen Festung die Aufmerksamkeit
zu schenken. Die Festung wurde in den ersten zwanzig Jahren nach ih¬
rer Besetzung durch die Preußen nicht modernisiert, man schränkte
sich lediglich auf provisorische Renovierungen ein. Eine Grundsanie¬
rung erfolgte erst nach Ende des Siebenjährigen Krieges. Diese bestand
hauptsächlich im Bau starker Befestigungen von der nördlichen Seite
her sowie in der Ausdehnung der Verteidigungslinie auf der südlichen
Seite. Im Norden wurde in den Jahren 1767-1770 der Bürgerwerder for-
tifiziert, der in der Mitte durch ein Hornwerk durchgeschnitten und mit
drei vorgezogenen
Lunetten
versehen wurde; zwischen 1772 und 1777
wurde Springstern - ein großes Bauobjekt in Form eines Kronwerkes,
das die Dominsel schützen sollte, erbaut. Die Modernisierung im Sü¬
den, die nach 1768 erst richtig begann, beruhte auf der Errichtung vor
der Kernumwallung einer
Enveloppe
und weiterer, vor ihr vorgeschobe¬
ner, sieben Werke.
Geschildert wurde nicht nur die Geschichte des Erbauens der Befesti¬
gungsanlagen, sondern es wurden auch die Festungsentwürfe analysiert.

Bis heute blieben 7 Entwurfszeichnungen der Festung erhalten (eine
wird dem König Friedrich
II.
zugeschrieben), auf denen sich verfolgen
lässt, auf welche Weise die Militäringenieure die entgültige Form der
Befestigungen herausarbeiteten. Das Thema
Fortifikationen
wurde mit
der Beschreibung der einzelnen Fragmente der Festung abgeschlossen.
Im zweiten Teil des Buches wurde vorgenommen, alle Bestandtei¬
le, die das Funktionieren der Festung möglich gemacht hatten, sowohl
zu Friedens- als auch Kriegszeiten, darzustellen. Geschildert wurde die
Garnison - vor allem ihre Stärke und die Gattungen der in der Stadt sta¬
tionierten Truppen. Umfangreich dargestellt wurden diejenigen Bauten,
die der Instandhaltung der Garnison gedient hatten. Genau beschrie¬
ben wurde die wichtigste Gruppe davon - die Kaserne. Diese Bauten
zeichneten sich nicht nur durch ihre Zahl, sondern auch durch die Ska¬
la und die Architekturlösungen aus. Unter den zu jener Zeit entstande¬
nen Kasernen findet der Komplex von fünf Bauten auf dem Bürgerwer¬
der Beachtung, in den Jahren 1787-1788 von CG. Langhans entworfen;
bemerkenswert ist auch eine Gruppe von drei identischen Kasernen,
1773-1774 von dem Stadtbauinspektor Hauptmann Ernst Wilhelm
Richter erbaut. Von den übrigen Militärobjekten wurden kurz die Wa¬
chen, die hiesigen Wohnkasematten sowie Magazinanlagen einschlie߬
lich der Pulvermagazine beschrieben. Getrennt behandelt wurde das in¬
teressanteste Bauwerk der Breslauer Festung - das Friedrichstor, von
CG. Langhans und Major
C v. Haab
entworfen und zwischen 1773 und
1776 errichtet. Dieser Bau war eine ungewöhnliche Verbindung zweier
Architekturbautypen - der Kasematte und des Tores einer Festung.
Gegenstand des dritten Teils bilden die wichtigsten Ereignisse der
Kriegsgeschichte der Festung. Als erstes davon wurde die Stadteinnah¬
me durch preußische Heerestruppen geschildert. Dazu bedurfte es we¬
der einer Belagerung noch eines Sturms. Die Stadtübernahme erfolg¬
te durch Kriegslist. Unter dem Vorwand, durch die Stadt nur ziehen zu
wollen, brachen die Preußen alle früheren mit dem Stadtrat getroffe¬
nen Vereinbarungen, besetzten die
Fortifikationen
samt aller wichtigen
Stadteinrichtungen, nahmen Mitglieder der Bürgerwehr gefangen und
gliederten diese in die preußische
Armée
ein. Die erste Stadtbelagerung
1757 hatte einen dramatischeren Verlauf. Damals, am 22. Oktober, wur¬
de auf dem Gelände zwischen dem heutigen Stadtzentrum und Deutsch
Lissa,
dem Vorfeld der Feste, ein Gefecht zwischen der von dem Für¬
sten von Bevern befehligten preußischen
Armée
und österreichischen

Heerestruppen ausgetragen. Die am östlichen Ufer der Lohe durch die
dort errichteten Befestigungen geschützten Preußen, wurden von öster¬
reichischen Truppen angegriffen, die nach den ganzen Tag anhaltenden
Kämpfen die Preußen aus deren Stellungen verdrängten und zum Rück¬
zug ans andere Oderufer zwangen. Nach zwei Tagen ergab sich die Fe¬
stung.
Die darauf zwei Wochen später folgende zweite Belagerung war we¬
sentlich ernsthafter. Diesmal wurde durch die preußische
Armée
ange¬
griffen, die nach dem Sieg in der Schlacht bei Leuthen am 9. Dezem¬
ber die Breslauer Festung umzingelte. Die Österreicher wehrten sich viel
länger (als zuvor die Preußen), doch ließ ihr Widerstand nach der Ex¬
plosion des Pulvermagazins in der Taschenbastion nach. Bald nach die¬
sem Ereignis kapitulierten die Österreicher.
Die härteste Efahrung im Laufe des Siebenjährigen Krieges war die
Bombardierung der Stadt 1760. Die österreichischen Truppen unter dem
General Laudon versuchten, angesichts des Mangels an Belagerungs¬
kanonen, den Festungskommandanten, General Tauentzien, mit Mör-
serbeschuss zur Kapitulation zu zwingen. Infolge der Mörsereinschläge
nahm die Bürgerbebauung beträchtlichen Schaden, die Festungswerke
dagegen blieben unversehrt. Der Kommandant ergab sich nicht. Die Be¬
lagerung wurde schnell, weil nach vier Tagen, durchbrochen.
Die letzte Episode im Verlaufe dieses Krieges war der 1761 erfolgte
Versuch russischer Truppen die Stadt zu erstürmen. Sie war aber außer
Gefahr, denn sie wurde nicht nur von der Garnison verteidigt. Anteil
daran hatten auch die Feldtruppen, die im befestigten Lager, südlich der
Stadt, nahe den Dörfern Gabitz und Neudorf, stationiert waren.
Die schwerste Belagerung der Breslauer Festung war der Angriff des
napoleonischen Heeres. Dieser dauerte vom 6. Dezember 1806 bis zum
7. Januar des folgenden Jahres. Die Verteidiger nutzten die Vorteile der
Festung nicht voll aus, die Mehrheit ihrer Außenwerke blieb unbesetzt.
Die Angreifer waren nicht im Stande, eine typische Belagerung zustan¬
de zu bringen, und entschieden sich, die Festung mit schweren Mörsern
zu bombardieren. Eine derartige Kampftaktik verursachte beträchtliche
Schäden in der Zivilbebauung. So kam es infolge des Drucks der Bürger
auf den Kommandanten zur Kapitulation der Festung.
SUMMARY
The subject of the present book is the history of the Wroclaw strong¬
hold: from the moment the city was taken over by the Prussian army in
1741
up to the year
1807,
when the fortifications were destroyed, after
being taken over by the Napoleonic army.
The book consists of three main parts. The first deals with the forti¬
fications. Their description is preceded by the summary of the modern
stronghold
s
building process. The author presents the first rampart ex¬
pansion of the stronghold near the end of the XVIth century, when the
structures were built according to the principles of the early and late
Italian School of artillery fortifications, and goes on to a short descrip¬
tion of subsequent modernisation, that took place in the XVIIth cen¬
tury in accordance with Old-Netherlandic Schools rules. Afterwards
we are presented with the status of Wroclaw s reinforcements in the
moment of the Prussian takeover and with the description of the Fre-
derican fortress. The stronghold wasn t modernised during the first

years of Prussian occupation, only some makeshift repairs were made.
Throughout modernisation took place only after the end of the Sev¬
en Years War and ranged from building reinforcements on the north
side to broadening the defence belt on the south side. In the north,
from
1767
to
1770,
the
Kępa Mieszczańska
Island was being fortified,
cut across with the hornwork and provided with three protruding tel¬
escopes. Also, between
1772
and
1777,
the construction of
Springstern
-
a large structure in the form of the crownwork shielding the Cathe¬
dral Island
-
took place. In the south modernisation began after
1768
and included constructing an envelope with seven works protruding it
in front of the rampart core.
The first part of the book deals not only with the history of the re¬
inforcements building, but also includes analysis of the strongholds
projects. Nowadays only seven conceptional drawings of the stronghold
remain (one credited to the king Frederic II), which portray the way the

army engineers worked out the final shape of the reinforcements. De¬
scription of the respective parts of the reinforcements concludes the
subject of fortifications.
In the second part the author attempted to present all the elements
that enabled the stronghold to function in times of peace as well as
war. It includes the description of the garrison
-
above all its size and
types of soldiery stationing in the city, structures that provided serv¬
ices. Barracks are portrayed in a great detail. Those structures distin¬
guished themselves not only by their numerical force, but also by scale
and architectural solutions. Among the barracks constructed in the pe¬
riod of interest there are some that stand out, particularly the complex
of five structures on
Kępa Mieszczańska
Island created by C.G. Lang-
hans
(1787-1788)
and the group of three identical barracks construct¬
ed by the cities construction inspector Ernst
Wilhelm
Richter
(1773-
1774).
Among the rest of the military facilities described in this part of
the book there are: guardhouses, local residential casemate and storage
buildings including gunpowder warehouses. Some effort was put into
presenting the most interesting structure of the Wroclaw stronghold
-
Frederic Gate designed by
CG. Langhans
and major C. v. Haab, con¬
structed between
1773
and
1776.
It was an atypical fusion of two archi¬
tectural types: casemate and fortress gate.
The third part of the book deals with the most important events from
the stronghold
s war
history. At first the entering of the Prussian army
into the city is presented. It wasn t an occupation, or even an assault, but
rather taking over the city by means of an elaborate ruse. Prussian sol¬
diers entered the city under the pretext of marching past the town and,
ignoring all previous arrangement with the City Council, taken over the
fortifications and all important city structures. They also took city sol¬
diers captive, later incorporating them by force into the Prussian army.
First siege of the city in
1757
was more dramatic. The battle between
Prussian army, under the command of prince
von Bevern,
and Austrian
army took place October 22nd on the foreground of the stronghold, on
the grounds between the present-day city centre and
Leśnica.
Prussians,
protected by the reinforcements constructed on the eastern shore of the
Ślęża
river, were attacked by Austrian army. After a day-long battle the
Prussians were pushed out from their positions and forced to withdraw
to the other side of the
Odra
river. Two days after the battle the strong¬
hold surrendered.

Next siege was much more important and took place two weeks af¬
ter the first. This time the Prussian army was on the attacking side. Af¬
ter their victory in the battle of Lutynia, they surrounded the Wroclaw
stronghold on December 9th. The Austrians were defending themselves
far longer, but their resistance weakened after the gunpowder ware¬
house in Bastion Sakwowy exploded. Austrians surrendered soon after
this event.
The most difficult experience of the Seven Years War was the bom¬
bardment of the city in
1760.
The Austrian army under the command
of general Laudon didn t have any siege artillery, thus they tried to force
the stronghold
s
commanding officer general Tauentzien to surrender by
means of mortar fire. As a result many buildings in the city were nearly
destroyed, but works of the stronghold didn t suffer any damage and its
commander didn t intend to surrender. The siege was aborted quickly,
after less than

days.
The last episode of the war was the attempted assault on Wroclaw by
the Russian army in
1761.
However, the city wasn t under any threat, for
it was protected not only by the strongholds garrison, but also by the
field army located in the fortified camp just south of the city: in villages
Gajowice and
Nowa Wieś Komandorska.
The most difficult of the Wroclaw stronghold s sieges was the attack
of the Napoleonic army. It lasted from December 6th
1806
to January 7th
1807.
The defenders didn t take full advantage of all the stronghold s as¬
sets, most of its outer works hasn t been staffed. Attackers weren t able
to conduct a typical siege and decided to bombard the stronghold with
heavy mortars. That tactics resulted in heavy damage taken by civilian
buildings. The inhabitants were putting enormous pressure on the com¬
mander, what finally led to the surrender of the stronghold.
