Summary
Bohemian medals of the 19th century
Introduction
The core of the exhibition is represented by medals and medal dies preserved in the collection of the Museum of the
Capital of Prague. This collection
-
consisting recently of around two and half thousand medals and their dies
-
started
its history in time of foundation of the museum in
1881,
and many museum people and important Bohemian numisma¬
tists took part in forming concept of the collection.
The main part of the medal collection of the Museum of the Capital of Prague is represented by specimens of the 19th
century and the beginning of the 20th century thematically focused on the capital of Prague. Because of the fact, that this
collection does not cover all medals produced in Prague, or even in Bohemia, in the mentioned period, it was necessary
to complete the selection with pieces from the National Museum and the Museum of Applied Arts in Prague. Political,
economic and cultural and club life especially in east Bohemia is documented here by an important group of medals lent
by the
Hořice
Museum.
The Bohemian medal production of the 19th century is classified by two basic periods. The first one
(1795-1856)
is
characterized by production of die-engravers employed in the Prague mint
-
A. Guillemard,
F. Stuckhart,
J.
V.
Lauffen-
böck,
J. Lerch,
and others. The second one covers the following fifty years and it is connected with new generation of
Bohemian medal designers:
V. Kříž,
J.
Pátek,
К.
Abraham, V. Šmakal, V. Šantrůček
and others, who reflected political, cul¬
tural and economic changes and development of the Bohemian society in the second half of the 19th century, together
with its growing national self-confidence. Work of the outstanding Bohemian medal designer
Václav
Seidan
seems to
be a connecting element for both of these periods. He inherited the best of the past and brought the most important
impulses for the local medal production in the next period.
The exhibition catalogue would like to bring the exclusive information about the exhibited medals with their descrip¬
tion, photographs of their obverses and reverses in their real size, plus technical data dealing with material, diameters,
fabric and basic references. The majority of medal descriptions have been added with notes about their original history.
Short life-stories of the medal designers also became a part of the catalogue together with relevant references. Detailed
descriptions of the medal dies have already been published in detail individually.
The main idea of the exhibition always copied efforts in presenting the most complete history of the Bohemian
medal production of the 19th century. Such concept tried to prepare conditions for detailed research in this field and to
incorporate the theme to the context of other production schemes
ofthat
period.
BOHEMIAN MEDALS OF THE FIRST HALF OF THE
19™
CENTURY
The first half of the 19th century is characterized by production of the die-engravers employed in the Prague mint (pro¬
duction of medals has been concentrated there by law until
1856).
Their activities have been mainly focused on engrav¬
ing and repairs of the minting dies. Production of medals has been connected with the direct government order, or it
was a private commission. The government issues celebrated members of the imperial family (coronations, funerals,
marriages, visits paid to Bohemia, or other political reasons). Also diligence (school medals) and activities supporting the
government policy (The Bohemian Vaccination Commission, etc.) have been honored. Appearance of medals, stylistic
quality, size and precious metals reflected the celebration purposes. Medals were commissioned privately, based on
orders of aristocratic bodies or higher clergy, and also because of personal activities of individual die-engravers following
their own economic profit. Such private orders echoed mainly personal anniversaries or celebration of introduction into
211
important ecclesiastic posts (installation of the Prague archbishops, the provosts of
Vyšehrad,
etc.). Medals produced
on basis of individual activities of the engravers have been dedicated to baptisms, confirmations, weddings, friendship,
name-days, beginning of the new century, calendar purposes, seasoning celebrations. Also playing tokens, religious med¬
als connected with the Bohemian patrons, or medals celebrating the hundredth anniversary of canonization of John of
Nepomuk
in
1829
have been produced in that way. These medals were intended to be sold to the public, mainly to the
Prague middle class, and in the 18th and the 19th century, they were very popular according to the contemporary price
lists.
Up to the mid-19th century, the designers of the medals connected with the Prague mint have been almost exclusively
foreigners coming from all parts of the
Habsburg
monarchy (A. Guillemard,
F. Stuckhart,
J.
V.
Lauffenböck, J. Lerch,
and
others). Centrally organized coinage, supervised by the highest minting office in Vienna
-
that was the reason for such
situation. Adepts of medal art coming from all parts of the empire have been trained at the academy for engravers in
Vienna (founded in
1716),
and after some practice in the Vienna mint, they have been sent to the individual mints of the
monarchy not regarding their nationality. Their appointment to the particular mints was not definite and they could be
transferred to mints in various parts of the empire when necessary. In that way, unified artistic style of the medal produc¬
tion in the
Habsburg
monarchy has been created, and because
ofthat
fact, until the mid-19th century, it is impossible to
talk about any specific national features of the medal design in the particular countries, Bohemia inclusive. The quality
of the medals exclusively depended on artistic talent of the medal engravers with their ability to express themselves
in process of preparation of the dies. The medals produced on basis of private order by aristocracy living in Bohemia
or by the higher clergy in Prague have been often commissioned in workshops of medal engravers active in Vienna (L.
Heuberger, J.
Harnisch,
J. M.
Lang, F. Lang, J. D. Böhm,
and others), in Italy
(F. Putinati,
L
Manfredini),
or Germany
(D. F.
Loos,
Α.
F. König,
К.
Lange,
and others), which caused effect of mutual influence in case of artistic style. Generally spo¬
ken, influence of the late Viennese baroque faded out in the medal production of Austrian countries at the end of the
18th century, and at the break of the 18th and 19th century, it was fully replaced by the newly appearing classicist style
based besides its general theses mainly on sculptures of
A. Canova
and B. Thorwaldsen. Classicism became the prevailing
artistic style of the medal production up to the beginning of the second half of the 19th century, when it started to be
gradually influenced by newly established styles, especially by historicism.
VACLAV
SEIDAN -
FOUNDER OF THE BOHEMIAN MEDAL TRADITION
The work of Vaclav J.
Seidan (1817-1870)
represents a connecting element between the first and the second period of
the medal production in Bohemia in the 19th century, and it was based on tradition of the die engravers working in the
Prague mint. In the 1850s and the 1860s, this art became a strong inspirational source for the new coming generation of
purely Bohemian origin of the last third of the 19th century
(V. Kříž,
К.
Pátek,
К.
Abraham,
and others).
V. J.
Seidan was
born in Prague and he studied medal design in the workshop of his father, and later, he attended
the Academy of Art in Prague and the Academy of Art in Vienna. In
1845-1848,
receiving the state scholarship, he lived
in Rome and Paris. In
1849,
he applied for job of an engraver in the Prague mint, but he was refused, and since then, he
resided permanently in Vienna since
1850.
The medal production of
V.J. Seidan
represents more than
160
items and it is
regarded as a chronicle of advancing national life in Bohemia. By its quality, purity of style and sense of
monumentality,
his work is comparable with medals of the best engravers of the mid-19th century.
BOHEMIAN MEDALS OF THE SECOND HALF OF THE
19™
CENTURY
The very beginning of the second period of the Bohemian medal production is connected with closing of the Prague
mint in
1856
and appearance of new legal private striking workshops on one side, and with political and cultural events
of the beginning of the second half of the 19th century accompanied with Bohemian national efforts on the other side.
The historical year of
1848
was a turning-point for these activities, but the real development in the national life in Prague
came later, during the 1860s and the 1870s, after cancellation of the Bach absolutist regime and after the following politi¬
cal liberalization. Medal production
ofthat
period
-
mostly anonymous
-
reflected activities of various Prague societies,
singing festivities, consecration of flags, mass meetings at
Letná,
placement of the foundation stone for the National
Theatre, celebration of numerous individualities of the Bohemian cultural and academic life, ecclesiastic celebrations and
212
visits paid by the imperial couple to Prague. Artistic value of these medals is mostly very low, and they have been made
of low quality metal
-
tin. Comparing these issues with pieces of the previous decades, these medals have been intended
for the widest public.
There was a change visible in the 1870s, and especially in the 1880s and in the 1890s in connection with coming of
new generation of the Bohemian engravers, such as
V. Kříž,
К.
Pátek,
К.
Abraham, V. Šmakal,
and others. From the artistic
point of view, their work shows much more quality, and from the contentual point of view, it reflects the cultural change
and political awakening of the Bohemian society during the second half of the 19th century. Increasing self-confidence of
the Bohemian society also corresponded with industrial and economic progress at the end of the 19th century and at the
beginning of the
го111
century. Economic success has been frequently reflected by numerous exhibitions and presenta¬
tions, with their peak in the 1890s in case of the Jubilee Exhibition in
1891
and the Ethnographic Exhibition in
1895,
both
in Prague. These exhibitions inspired production of several dozens of medals designed by numerous authors. The most
important sculptors of that time (M. Pirner, B. Schnirch, J. V. Myslbek, J. Mauder), as well as important engravers from
Vienna (J. Tautenhayn, J. Jauner, or A. Scharff) participated in production of these medals commissioned by business
chamber or industry chamber, the Bohemian Academy of Sciences inclusive.
The break of the 19th and the 20th century is regarded as a period of artistic rebirth. On one side, the era of historicism
and eclecticism ended, on the other side, the period of Art
Nouveau
started, and this style influenced the Bohemian
medal production of the first decade of the 20th century very much. S. Sucharda is regarded as the most important
representative of this new artistic stream in Bohemia. His work crowns the medal production in Bohemia in the 19th
century and points to the perception of medals as the fully original artistic artifacts, with no necessary connection to
the traditional source of ideas.
