This assembly of research tries to pull together existing empirical
evidence on the existence of social protection in the informal
economy amidst globalization in order to recognize where gaps
exist and where further work is required. The country papers
provide a conceptual and normative framework to guide policy
makers in designing appropriate strategies to help the informal
workforce address risks and seize opportunities. Each one begins
with a discussion of the key aspects of the informal economy: its
definition, size and composition, linkages with poverty and
growth, legal status, and the risks and opportunities associated
with it.
