a novel about the ballet than Vicki
Baum.
Music, opera and the ballet
have always been part of her life. Her
husband, a former conductor of the Berlin
Royal Opera House, is now a conductor in
the United States. She displays the full
range of her talent in this memorable novel.
It tells the story of a Russian
prima
ballerina, first against the glamorous
background of Vienna and later in the
strenuously competitive ballet of New
York. It opens with the sudden collapse
due to pneumonia of the ageing but brilliant
ballerina who is to dance the lead in the
company s new ballet.
Katja Milenkaya
has only a week in which to prepare her¬
self for a role while others in the company
have had five months preparation.
During those muscle-aching days and
nights of rehearsal, the life of
Katja
and
her associates in the exclusive world of
ballet is brilliantly depicted. There are those
whom she loves, like Grisha, the moody,
brilliant dancer who leaves
tojóin Diaghileff
and later brings
Katja
into the troupe
;
there
is
Mirko
Bagoryan,
the choreographer and
first dancer of the Vienna Ballet who is her
first lover
;
the Spanish matador who arouses
a wild, unreasoning love in her
;
and the man
she marries. But ballet is the dominating
passion of her life.
This is a novel steeped in the essence of
ballet; glorious dancing, beautiful music,
exquisite costumes, ethereal love revealed
by the dance and the tragedies of backstage
love against the almost superhuman
physical demands of the world of the ballet.
