The Bolero School traces the history
of the classical Spanish dance, its
regional roots and connections to
flamenco. The Pericet syllabus of
exercises and sixteen dances is
codified here for the first time.
Tracing the connection to the
1
9th-
century ballet of Cecchetti and
Bournonville, the book is important
to dancers and teachers in the fields
of ballet and Spanish dance. It
represents the author s fifty years of
experience as dancer, teacher and
director of Spanish dance and
ballet. Included are biographies of
Pericet family members who have
preserved this dance form, and of
other famous Spanish dancers, as
well as the history of the Ballet
Nacional
de España
and the Spanish
Dance Society.

Marina
Grut
was honoured
by the Spanish Government when
King
Juan
Carlos I invested her as
Dame of the Order of Queen Isabel of
Spain, for her presentation and
preservation of Spanish dance.
University trained and a professional
ballet and Spanish dancer she has
published the books The History of
Ballet in South Africa
(1981),
Spanish
Dance
(1971 ),
and The
Jota
(2000);
presented a paper for the Spanish
Ministry of Culture s
1992
symposium
The
Encuentro Escuela Bolera;
founded the Spanish Dance Theatre
in
1982
in Washington D.C., where
she was Professorial Lecturer at
George Washington University
Theatre and Dance Department; and
lectured in ballet history and taught
Spanish dance at the University of
Cape Town.
She and her husband,
Mikael
Grut,
now live in London where she is
President {for Europe) of the Spanish
Dance Society, of which she is co-
founder. She examines and teaches
internationally and writes for The
Dancing Times and Flamenco
International Magazine.
The Bolero School
The Bolero School is a book for both ballet and Spanish dancers
and a journey through the history of the fascinating country of
Spain with its vibrant culture and people. It is the fusion of fifty
years of ballet and Spanish dance experience by the author as
dancer, teacher and director of Spanish dance performances for
her own company in the USA and others. The author endeavours
to unlock and explain the many mysteries that surround this dance
form for teachers, historians and lay readers. The connection to
ballet is explored, especially to the style of the

9th century as
found in the Cecchetti method and in the work of August
Bournonville. Also explored is the bolero school s distinction from
ballet, that makes it so unique.
The historical progression and significance of the
Escuela Bolera
or
the.classical bolero school of Spanish dance and its regional roots
are traced, as well as those of the Pericet family who today are its
main preservers. The book also contains biographies of Spanish
dancers and teachers who have been connected with the bolero
school through the ages.
For the first time steps and dances of this school and its fore¬
runners have been codified and their roots explained. The often
hard to find reasons for many enigmas concerning steps and style
in the various dances are included. The history of the Ballet
Nacional de España
and what came before it is dealt with. There
are definitions of
Manolos
and
Manolas, Majas
and
Majos,
zarzuelas, loas, entremeses, bailadoras, bailes del candil
and many
other words connected to Spanish dance.
