Understanding Fragrance Chemistry
The world of perfumery conjures up images of glamour, dreams and romance, involving
expensive oils extracted from exotic plants.While these images are certainly part of
this fascinating field, behind the images is a modern industry with a strong scientific
basis, for which the core science is chemistry. For all of those working in the fragrance
business and the consumer goods industries it serves, knowledge of chemistry is

Charles Sell, PhD, has more than
30
years experience in the
fragrance industry. His work at Givaudan has covered all aspects of
synthetic organic chemistry as applied to the fragrance industry, from
discovery of novel materials through process R&D to improvement
of established chemical manufacturing processes. His current research
interests are in the field of the chemistry of
olfaction.
