War and Peace in Africa explains the roots of African conflicts and
wars in their historical and global contexts. The contributors present
extraordinary perspectives on diverse aspects of both civil and regional
conflicts in ways that illuminate such key themes as nation building, re¬
source control, ethnonationalism, external actors, armed conflicts, and
state collapse.
The book contains twenty-six chapters divided into three parts: Part
A focuses on the contexts and causations of wars and conflicts; Part

dwells on wars and conflicts resulting from Africa s contact with Eu¬
rope; and Part

highlights contemporary wars and post-war recon¬
structions.
The emerging themes call for critical reflections on the future of
postcolonial
Africa: Is the
postcolonial
state viable as is? Is there a fun¬
damental problem with the exercise of power and the formula for re¬
distribution of national resources that provoke violent responses from
minorities and the powerless? Can civic institutions prevent conflicts?

Benue State University, Nigeria, teaches at the University of Texas at
Austin where he is the Frances Higginbotham
Nalle
Centennial Profes¬
sor in History as well as the University Teaching Distinguished Professor.
He is the author and editor of over a hundred books and the Series Ed¬
itor of Carolina Academic Press African World Series.
Raphael CMjkrice MJoku, a first class honors graduate of University
of Nigeria Nsukka, received two Ph.Ds.

in African History from Dal-
housie University, Canada, and in African Politics from Free University
Brussels. He holds a joint appointment in the Department of History
and Department of Pan African Studies at the University of Louisville,
Kentucky. Njoku is author and
coeditor
of five books and scores of ar¬
ticles in scholarly journals and edited volumes. His most recent awards
include: University of Louisville Distinguished Research Award, Indiana
University Library Residency Fellowship, Victor Olurunsola Endowed Re¬
search Award, and the Schomburg Center Library Residency Fellowship.
