Kamil Krofta
and his Diplomatic Diaries
Kamil
Krofta
(1876-1945)
was been one of the most prominent Czech
(and later Czechoslovak) historians of first half of XXth Century. He was been
one of the founders of modern editions of historical sources in Czech Historiog¬
raphy, as narrative historian he was interested mostly in Czech political and
religion history of XV. and
XVI.
Century. After WW I, at the beginning of
modern Czechoslovak statehood, he jointed young Czechoslovak diplomacy and
was been appointed first envoy of Republic to the Holy See in Rome, and this
step was been the beginning of his next very successful career in Czechoslovak
foreign service.
Just in Rome, and later, as a Czechoslovak envoy in Austria
(1922),
he
began writing his Diplomatic Diary, which manuscript is to-day an unique his¬
torical source for some political and ecclesiastical problems, concerning first
years of Czechoslovakia after WW I. The critical edition of this manuscript,
which consists of more than
640
pages of Krofta s handwritten notes, is the
main goal of this book. The first three parts of Krofta s Diary are concerning
with different problems of relations between Czechoslovakia and Holy See in
Rome, for example possibilities of Czechoslovak government to influence of
nominations of new Bishops in Republic. A big part of Krofta s notes is dealing
with problems of exchange of Bishops of Hungarian origin at Slovakia and
Ruthenia
with younger priests, which were loyal toward new Republic. Other no
small part of his diary is concerning with some political and ecclesiastical prob¬
lems in relations between Czechs and Germans in western part of Czechoslova¬
kia and, e.g., attempts of some circles in Holy See to create religion organiza¬
tions for German minority in Czech Lands. Of course, much attention Krofta
devoted in his Diary to problems of massive ebb of Czechs from Catholic
Church after the birth of Republic and reflections this process in high ecclesias¬
tical circles in Rome. The last part of Krofta s diary treat with the beginning of
his diplomatic Mission in Vienna in first months of
1922,
after signature of
Czechoslovak-Austrian political treaty from
16
December
1921.
In later period of his Austrian Mission envoy Krofta had probably not
time to continue in writing his Diary, but his diplomatic Career continued suc¬
cessfully. In the period
1925-1927,
at the top of Locarno years, he was been a
Czechoslovak minister in Berlin, and than more than nine years he was been un¬
official deputy of minister of foreign affairs
Edvard
Beneš
(and chief of political
department of MFA). Then, between March of
1936
and October
1938,
Krofta
was been minister of foreign affaires of Czechoslovak Republic in this most ex¬
posed period in European inter-war years. Later, in the years of Nazi Occupa¬
tion, he joined the resistance movement and he was been arrested in
Terezín
at
. He died immediately after liberation of Czechoslovakia.
