Summary
Marian
Jakóbiec
(1910-1998),
a Slavic scholar, professor at the University of
Wroclaw, partly edited his memoirs and diaries for publication himself. A Few
Pages from the Memoirs of a Slavic Scholarv/ere published earlier on the occasion of
his 70th birthday. At the end of his life he wrote extensive memoirs from his child¬
hood and youth and told the story of his two-year stay in Belgrade in
1945-1947.
He also edited the accounts of some of his scientific trips. Additionally, this vol¬
ume includes fragments of domestic diaries noting events and reflections from
the years of academic, organisational and didactic work
(1950s
and
1960s).
Diver¬
sified character of all this material, differing in its temporal perspective, manner
of narrating and commenting, justifies the title From afar and near
-
beside the
notes written every day, presenting a close view of reality, the collection features
memoirs offering more profound reflection. The volume was compiled and an¬
notated by the daughter,
Milica
Jakóbiec-Semkowowa.
Marian
Jakóbiec
was born on the 8th September
1910
in Hinowice near
Brzeżany
in the province of
Tarnopol
in a family of an artisan. His father, Jan,
was a wheelwright and the modier, Anna
née
Kuszmider, was a housewife and
a seamstress. Peace and relative affluence of the childhood was brutally disrupted
by the First World War. Despite material hardships experienced during the war
(die fadier fought in the Austrian army, but fortunately returned home) and
immediately after it, die parents provided
bodi
sons with proper education, how¬
ever delayed by the outbreak of the war. The older son,
Antoni,
graduated from
a training college and became a teacher. Marian
Jakóbiec
graduated from a sec¬
ondary school in
1930
and began his Polish studies at die
Jan Kazimierz
Univer¬
sity in Lvov, at the time he was also working in the
Ossoliński
Institute Library.
A major part of the memoirs from the childhood and youth, written in an old age

(the typescript is dated for
1994),
is devoted to the picturesque descriptions of
the native country, its complex history and ethnic composition with a gallery of
unusual characters.
While studying at the university,
M. Jakóbiec
went twice abroad, first to Prague
and then to Belgrade. The Balkan trip was recorded in diaries giving account of
travels in the southern lands of the Yugoslav Kingdom in the summers of
1934
and
1936.
These are concise notes written in a copybook in pen, sometimes in
pencil, and occasionally illustrated with sketches. Observations and reflections
render the exotic character and beauty of that part of Europe. Direct accounts
of the trip were included as intervals between the memoirs written from the per¬
spective of an old age. The other trip to Belgrade
(1936)
became crucial for his
personal life as it was then that he met a student of a university Slavic department,
Natalia
Drinjaković,
whom he married in autumn
1938.
During the stay he wrote
most part of his doctoral thesis supervised by Julisz Kleiner, which resulted in the
acquisition of the doctoral title in
1937
at the
Jan Kazimierz
University in Lvov.
The second part of the memoirs begins with a detailed account of September
1939;
references to a family tragedy (a soldier s death of the brother,
Antoni)
and
rapidly deteriorating material situation are intermingled with the descriptions of
Lvov s streets, where first the German and then the Soviet armies marched, at¬
tempts to save the collections from the
Ossoliński
Library, when all the staff stayed
on permanent duty, and coming to terms with the new Soviet authorities.
During the Nazi occupation Marian Jakdbiec became involved with the In¬
formation and Propaganda Bureau of the Home Army, writing and editing re¬
ports. He donated a spacious volume of the surviving copies of the reports to the
Ossoliński
Institute in Wroclaw, while two situational reports from
1944
have
been incorporated in this book.
The next part of the memoirs prepared by the author is entitled Two Years
on a Side-track. Written in the
1990s,
they are an account of two years spent with
the family in Belgrade in diplomatic service. The trip to Yugoslavia seemed a
fortunate solution to the problem of a family forced to leave Lvov. Diplomatic
service proved to be uninspiring, subject to various political pressures, preventing
further academic development. A proposal of an academic post at the University
of Wroclaw offered a chance of implementing professional plans and stability
in personal life. The first months in Wroclaw, settling in a house in
Oporów
are
described by the daughter,
Milica
Jakóbiec-Semkowowa,
on the basis of her own
memories and surviving documents.
Marian
Jakóbiec s
further professional life was connected with the University
of Wroclaw, where he went through consecutive stages of professional develop¬
ment, organising Slavic studies, performing the duties of the Dean
-
organiser of
the Department of Linguistics,
a Prorector
and the director of an institute. The
extensive scope of his activities is substantiated by selected pages from the diaries
written in the
1950s
and
1960s,
complementing a picture of life in those years
marked with numerous conflicts and problems of everyday life, which had to be

coped with. They also document his conscientious attitude to academic work and
teaching.
A separate section is constituted by Travel Diaries
-
accounts of occasional,
academic trips abroad, which became an opportunity to reflect on various sub¬
jects. The stay in Ukraine on the occasion of celebrating the Year of
Słowacki
(1959)
resulted in scientific impressions, descriptions of the country and acquir¬
ing new friends. The trip to Belgrade and Sarajevo in
1969
reveals enormous civi-
lisational development in diat part of Europe. The trip to Leipzig
(1967)
consti¬
tutes an encounter with the ideology-dominated circles of East-German scholars
in Russian studies. The stay with students in Rostov on the Don
(1969)
proves an
opportunity to encounter many peculiarities of Soviet reality. The accounts of
the last two trips
-
to Sweden
(1977)
and Badenweiller in Bavaria
(1985) -
are
occasionally surprising impressions of the encounter with a completely different
world in stark contrast with Polish reality.
Family motifs interwoven throughout the book, also present in the photo¬
graphs illustrating the text, complement the characteristics of an academic, au¬
thor of coursebooks and monographs with important features of his personality
-
cordiality and kindness.
