SUMMARY
The most serious crisis of the Czech-Slovak nationhood culminated in three
March days of
1939.
The actual disintegration of the united Czech and Slovak nation
was preceded by a six-month-long period provoked by the Munich verdict. It was
packed with dynamic events unseen in the entire era of the Czechoslovak existence.
The independent Slovak State, German and Hungarian occupation and the
Protektorat
Böhmen und Mähren
epitomized a direct outcome of the domestic Czech-Slovakian
ferment, which was spurred and controlled by the advancing Nazis and Fascists.
These fundamental changes afflicted lives in both nations. The Czechs and
Slovaks living on the other territory were most severely hit. The anti-Czech propaganda,
accentuated by Hlinka s Slovak People s Party (thereinafter the
HSĽS)
during the
Second Republic period, startled the Czech population living on the Slovak territory
after 14th March
1939
to such an extent that many Czechs fled Slovakia. Until
1941,
the Slovak government had tackled the situation of Czechs living in Slovakia from
two fundamental positions: part of the Czech population was to be expelled (especially
those, who were identified as enemies of the Slovak nationhood and the so-called
dispensable and those, who allegedly opposed advancement of Slovakia and the
Slovaks); it presumed that the others would gradually adapt to the new social-political
situation. Further developments on the political and military front forced the govern¬
ment to soften measures against the Czechs and advocate assimilation, although
the radical wing of the
HSĽS
did not ease its anti-Czech aggression.
The Czech s lives in the new Slovak social-political conditions did not stop
or stagnate. The Czechs took part in running the new state in all sectors, but, most
importantly, they participated in anti-Nazi and
anti-HSĽS
resistance.
A majority of Czechs who lived, worked or illegally operated in Slovakia
entered the Czechoslovak democratic anti-Fascist resistance. Their decision to support
foreign and domestic resistance oriented at restoration of the disrupt republic and
its democratic system, was instigated by these objectives. The chief participants in
the first rebel activities within the broadly branched National Defence in Slovakia
(Obrana národa na Slovensku)
were patriots of Czech and Slovak nationality
-
legio¬
naries, intellectuals, who had played an active role at the birth and consolidation of
the Czechoslovak Republic on a political, scientific and cultural level, and a large
number of common people with their own private and patriotic reasons for taking
decisions and acting. The National Defence in Slovakia fully embarked on rebellious
activities after the breakout of World War II, when the emphasis moved beyond the
border. The main activity of the Defenders lay in organising illegal border cros¬
sings of troops able to fight and moving people persecuted for political and racial
reasons beyond the Protectorate borders and the Slovak State. A network of willing
border
crossers
and transporters worked along the entire length of the Protectorate-
Slovak border and reached as far as the Balkans and the Middle East. Furthermore,
270
the Defenders organised a comprehensive intelligence service for political leaders
and military commanders of the Czechoslovak foreign resistance. Intelligence coming
from the National Defence (acquired and dispatched by a group close to Major
Josef
Dřímal, Vladimír Velcký, Konrád
Ehrmann and individual intelligence groups
of Captain
Stanislav Mareš, JUDr. Michal Zibrín
and
Karel Hostaša)
formed an
important connection between domestic resistance and foreign resistance groups.
Members of the National Defence gathered material for sabotages and collected
weapons.
The National Defence in Slovakia did not come forward with its own political
manifesto. It followed the spirit of the Czech and Moravian National defence, which
was concerned with liberating Czechoslovakia from Nazism and restoring the republic
on democratic foundations within pre-Munich borders. The National Defence in
Slovakia had a Czechoslovak character, but did not explicitly discuss relations
between the Czechs and Slovaks in the restored republic. The leadership of the
National Defence in Slovakia lay in the hands of Major in reserve Josef
Dřímal,
Josef
Hožďora,
Josef
Novotný, Vladimír
Seitz,
Bohumil Peťura,
Ing. Jan
Josef Bílek,
Professor MUDr.
Karel Koch, Vladimír Velecký, Konrád
Ehrmann and others.
The Czechs resistance in Slovakia became evident in the illegal communist
party, too. Leading Czech communists
Jan Osoha, Július
Benada,
Pavel
Stahl,
Karel
Kubín, Ladislav Exnár, Karel Bacílek, Lubomír Linhart,
Karol Šmidke
and others
held leading initiatives in resistance activities of the illegal Communist Party of
Slovakia in its most difficult period of total persecution. Together with Slovak com¬
munists, they established central, provincial, district and local party headquarters and
built them up across the country under complicated conditions. All forms of anti-
Nazi resistance were subjected to two fundamental objectives
-
defeat of Nazism and
domestic collaborationists and achieving the greatest possible victory of the party
and the working class. In
1939-1943,
the communist leaders experienced serious
ideological frictions concerning political strategy and tactics in their opinions on the
future of the Slovak people and Slovakia . These disagreements resulted in the
creation of separate fractions, which, however, continued to act as one party. The
Czech communists played a decisive role in the ideologist heterogeneity of com¬
munism in Slovakia. However, they should not be suspected of a unified or even
opposing advancement against the Slovak communists. Their role was characterised
by a generational conflict and clash between conservative Bolshevik dogmatists and
communists with nationalistic orientation (i.e. young Slovak generation of com¬
munists raised in the Czechoslovak Republic). The Czech communists played an
active role in all forms of anti-Fascist resistance from printing and distributing leaflets
to organising armed conflicts. They sacrificed many lives in this battle and remained
the most ardent supporters of Slovak communists not only between
1938
and
1943,
but also in the following months.
271
Activities of the National Defence in Slovakia were partly compromised as
early as
1940.
Many members were imprisoned and the Czechs were banished to
the Protectorate. Some members managed to leave the Slovak Republic and entered
the Czech army in foreign countries. The German
Abwehr
and the Central State
Police minimised activities of the National Defence in mid-
1945.
The free Defenders
and people released from prison took part in resistance activities in Czechoslovak
democratic anti-Nazi groups.
The resistance group
Flóra,
which got its name after the Latin form of the
leader
Květoslava Viestová-Burešová,
became the greatest-size group consisting
almost entirely of Slovaks. The Czechs dominated only in the
Justícia
group led by
Professor MUDr.
Karel Koch
and
Oldřich
Seiler.
The military resistance group
Victoire
under the leadership of Lieutenant-Colonel
Jakub Hluchý
and Lieutenant-
Colonel Josef
Tlach
had a strong base of Czech rebels, just like the intelligence group
Hela andKavárník
(i.e. coffee shop keeper), which was known by its abbreviation
JaR. Josef
Špáta
was the central person of
Hela
and
Vladimír Žikeš
was the leader
of the
Kavárnik
section.
Flóra, Justícia,
Victoire,
Hela andKavárník
constituted a strong resisting power
from mid-
1941
and represented a Czechoslovak democratic anti-Nazi resistance in
Slovakia. In principle, all groups surpassed their genesis; they were all united by
one objective
-
contribution to the defeat of Nazism, Fascism and political natio¬
nalism and restoration of the Czechoslovak Republic, pluralistic political parties
and parliamentary democracy. The road to this goal was complicated in political
procedures, but everybody came to realize that armed conflict with the Nazis and
collaborationists was inevitable. Approaches of particular resistant subjects differed
in their political perceptive of Czech-Slovak relations within the restored republic,
where the future status of the Slovak nation played a decisive role. Members
consisting of a broad spectrum of persons active in Czechoslovak political and
social life took a stand to this fundamental issue alongside with active anti-Nazi
and anti-nationalistic resistance activities mostly represented by illegal border cros¬
sings, comprehensive intelligence, activities against decisions and persecutions of
the Slovak totalitarian regime and material preparations for the confrontation. Flora
agreed with the official governmental pre-Munich theory of Czechoslovakism and
favoured restoration of Czechoslovakia on grounds of ethnical recognition in a single
Czechoslovak nation, which it demonstrated in its political documents. This official
political manifestation not only ideologically shook and weakened
Flóra,
but it also
discarded it from further share of political power in Slovakia after forming the
Slovak National Council at Christmas
1943,
when it fell victim to skilful political
manoeuvres performed by its opponents, mainly the communists. Efforts to maintain
its position of a resistance coordinator became even more difficult, as other resistance
subjects, which formed the Czechoslovak democratic anti-Nazi resistance body in
Slovakia, gave up political proclamations concerning this fundamental issue
{Justícia),
272
openly disagreed with
Flóra (Kavárník),
or concentrated on their own special mis¬
sions
(Hela
to its intelligence activity,
Victoire
and LTC
František
Urban s group to
military issues and preparation of an uprising).
The Czechs, who were more or less present in each Czechoslovak democratic
anti-Nazi resistance group, did not share a unified standpoint on the future status of
the Czech and Slovaks. Mostly, they preferred to discuss such an important issue
after the war and agreed that national-emancipating demands of the Slovak nation
should be tackled in the restored Czechoslovak Republic.
The Czechoslovak democratic anti-Nazi resistance in Slovakia and the com¬
munists resistance had not become strictly separated until
1943.
Both these elementary
subjects, together with resistance groups of the Slovak agrarians and members of
banned political parties, had closely collaborated. There were several appeals for
even a closer mutual collaboration. In the second half of
1943,
however, the com¬
munist party gained superiority. In fact, it became the one single resistance subject
performing as a political party, which was supported by Slovak agrarians and leading
social democrats. Together they created the Slovak National Council,
i.e.
revolutionary
representative organ of Slovakia and the Slovaks. The Czechoslovak democratic
anti-Nazi policy, represented by the rebellious groups
Flóra, Justícia, Kavárník,
but
also
Victoire
and other military groups, which later appeared in Professor MUDr.
Vavro
Šrobár s
group, continued working alongside the Slovak National Council,
played a significant role during preparations for the Slovak National Uprising and
took active part in it.
After the war and February
1948,
resistance groups against Fascism were
regarded as victors, who were allowed to act as they pleased; this fact lay in the
current political interests of the communist party. Evaluations were performed
according to class and party principles (unfortunately not only metaphorically), which
victimised the entire second resistance movement and especially the Czechoslovak
democratic anti-Nazi resistance consisting of particular rebellious groups.
The essay, together with its main mission (i.e. mapping the Czechs participation
in anti-Nazi resistance in Slovakia between
1939
and
1943)
aspires to justify the
Czechoslovak democratic anti-Nazi resistance in Slovakia. However, it does not
declare to be absolute. It should be regarded as a starting point for broader and deeper
research on Czech people residing in Slovakia during World War II and their
participation in anti-Nazi resistance.
