The Dimensions of Social and Political Philosophy
of the Enlightenment
Summary
In Lithuania the Enlightenment as an European philosophi¬
cal movement started at the second part of the 18th century, that
is fifty years later than it started in the Western Europe, reached
maturity at the very end of the century and was supplanted by the
Romantic Movement during the thirties and forties of the 19th
century. Its development, which lasted seven or eight decades, can
be divided into three periods: transition from scholasticism to
modern thinking, maturation, and decline.
It is almost impossible to date precisely the beginning of the
transition; for the modern ideas penetrated Lithuania slowly,
gradually opposing and supplanting the traditional scholasticism,
so that the new way of thinking became manifest only at the second
half of the 18th century. The transition from scholasticism to the
Enlightenment philosophy ended in
1772.
That year coincides with
the time of the first division of the Republic of the Two Nations.
The maturation took approximately twenty years. The Edu¬
cational Commission, that was established after the first division
of the Republic, promoted the development of the Enlightenment
philosophy, which consolidated its position, looking for the new
ideas and ways of the state salvation and reformation, and direct¬
ing its general attempts to education. But this beneficial process
was hindered in
1793
by the second division of the Republic and
finally it was suppressed in
1795
by the third division, during which
the state lost the last remnants of its sovereignty. Therefore the
Enlightenment philosophy in Lithuania did not manage to de¬
velop all its ideas and tendencies before the beginning of its decline.
The third period lasted during the first two or three decades
of the 19th century. The new ideas coming from the West gradually
disintegrated the Enlightenment ideology, which finally was
supplanted by the Romanticism.

Generally the Enlightenment philosophy in Lithuania
borrowed the ideas from its Western counterpart and followed its
paths. Nevertheless the Western ideas were selected, interpreted
and evaluated in front of the Lithuanian cultural, historical and
political background. In this sense it is possible to speak about
some originality of the Enlightenment philosophy in Lithuania.
Unfortunately the historical events were not favorable to the
development of its all branches. The political misfortunes of the
Republic of the Two Nations caused the greatest interest of
thinkers to the political and social theories at the expense of other
philosophical theories.
During the first period of the Enlightenment philosophy in
Lithuania the social and political theories did not predominate: the
social and political problems were considered episodically and
fragmentarily. In that transitional period the thinkers were hin¬
dered from the direct discussions of practical philosophy problems
by the inherited scholastic habituation to the contemplative specu¬
lations. In the field of social and political philosophy some of them,
relaying on the principles of practical philosophy of Ch.Wolff, tried
to reconcile the scholasticism with the ideas of the Enlightenment,
others turned directly to the Enlightenment.
The social and political philosophies became the matter of
the main concern after the first division of the Republic. The ways
of political salvation were sought in the theories of the France
Enlightenment philosophy. The most influential group of thinkers
relayed mostly on physiocratic ideas. At the end of the second
period the ideas of
Russo
gained popularity but they were not
developed further.
During the period of decline of the Enlightenment
philosophy in Lithuania the social and political theories of that
philosophy, although weakened and deadened, survived the next
twenty years. They were studied but were not developed and
innovated. Finally, because of the pressure of the ideas of the
Romantic Movement, they disintegrated and their remnants were
assimilated by the theories of the Romanticism.

Streszczenie
Oświecenie na Litwie opóźniło się w porównaniu z Europą
Zachodnią o pół stólecia. Pierwsze filozoficzne początki Oświe¬
cenia pojawiały się dopiero od połowy
XVIII
wieku na tle stop¬
niowego przejścia od scholastyki do filozofii nowożytnej. Filozo¬
fia Oświecenia rozwinęła się tylko w ostatnich dziesięcioleciach
XVIII
wieku, gdy Oświecenie w Europie Zachodniej już dobiegło
swego końca. Tendencje oświeceniowe, przekroczywsze próg
XIX
wieku, przetrwały do lat dwudziestych, a odrębne ich
przejawy
-
do lat trzydziestych, kiedy ostatecznie zostały wy¬
parte przez romantyzm.
Mimo chronologicznych różnic filozofia Oświecenia na
Litwie ścisłe wiązała się z Oświeceniem zachodnioeuropejskim.
Nawet w późniejszych dziesięcioleciach, gdy filozofia Oświece¬
nia na Litwie umocniła się, ona ciągle pozostawała pod wpływem
Oświecenia zachodnioeuropejskiego. Filozofia oświeceniowa
jednak bardzo wybiórczo przejmowała i twórczo przystosowy¬
wała kierunki filozofii zachodnioeuropejskiej do uwarunkowań
historycznych i kultorowych Litwy. W ten sposób ona potrafiła
dość swoiście zaznaczyć kierunek swego rozwoju.
Filozofię Oświecenia na Litwie można podzielić na trzy
fazy: przejściową, dojrzałą i schyłkową. Faza przejściowa, która
nie zawierała określonego początku, trwała do pierwszego roz¬
bioru Rzeczypospolitej Obojga Narodów. Przejście od scho¬
lastyki do filozofii nowożytnej, a jednoczesne i do Oświecenia
stało się podstawową drogą filozofii fazy przejściowej. Faza
dojrzała, która rozpoczęła się po pierwszym rozbiorze, inten¬
sywnie rozwijała się w ciągu dwóch dziesięcioleci. Nagłe przer¬
wana przez drugi rozbiór, ona była ostatecznie zruinowana
przez utratę państwowości. W fazie dojrzałej filozofia Oświece¬
nia nię tylko osiągnęła szczyt swego rozwoju, ale też jako

doktryna była skierowana na cele przebudowy państwa. Faza
schyłkowa, która nastąpiła po trzecim rozbiorze, przetrwała do lat
dwudziestych

wieku. Chociaż w
filosofii
fazy schyłkowej
dążano kontynuować tradycje Oświecenia, tendencje posto-
świeceniowe coraz bardziej wpływały na jej ukierunkowanie.
Jedną z głównych gałęzi, której w okresie Oświecenia na
Litwie udzielono szczególną uwagę, była filozofia społeczna i
polityczna. Głębiej niż inne gałęzi, ona zaznaczała ukierunkowa¬
nie ideowe Oświecenia i wyróżniała się jako jeden z podstawo¬
wych więzów całego okresu.
W fazie przejściowej rozwój filozofii społecznej i politycznej
dużo więcej niż innych gałęzi filozofii był obciążany tradycjami
scholastyki, przede wszystkim jej ukierunkowaniem kontem¬
placyjnym. Problemy społeczne i polityczne byłi tylko mar¬
ginesowo rozpatrywane na tle rozwoju filozofii teoretycznej.
Orientacja społeczna i polityczna była podsycana przez umiar¬
kowane kierunki filozoficzne Oświecenia Europy Zachodniej,
zwałaszcza przez recepcję filozofii praktycznej Ch.Wolffa. W
rezultacie, ukształtowały się dwie główne tendencje: jedna
dopasowywała recepcję zasad Ch. Wolffa do tradycji scholastyki,
druga zaś celowo uzasadniała zwrot na drogę Oświecenia.
W fazie dojrzałej filozofia społeczna i polityczna nie tylko
szeroko rozwinęła się, ale i odsunęła inne gałęzi filozofii na
margines ideowy. W odróżnieniu od fazy przejściowej rozwój
filozofii społecznej i politycznej był wspierany przez recepcję
filozofii Oświecenia francuskiego. W fazie dojrzałej ukształ¬
towały się dwa kierunki filozofii społecznej i politycznej: fizjo-
kratyzm, najwcześniej powstały, najwięcej rozwinięty, i russo-
izm, nieosiągawszy dojrzalszego poziomu filozoficznego.
W fazie schyłkowej filozofia społeczna i polityczna, choć
ścieśniona przez kierunki postoświeceniowe, jeszcze dwa
dziesięciolecia kontynuowała ukierunkowanie oświeceniowe.
W
ostatných
latach swego rozwoju jednak coraz bardzej
poddawała się inspiracjom kierunków postoświeceniowych,
przede wszystkim preromantyzmu i romantyzmu.
