adam_text | This is an account of how two theories,
vast in scope and great in explanatory power,
have helped us to understand the distribution
of living things on the planet.
For centuries, as explorers travelled to
new shores and brought back specimens
and accounts of the wildlife, people marvelled
at the strange arrangements of animals and
plants. Why no polar bears in Antarctica?
Why have marsupials prospered in Australia
and New Guinea while placentals dominate
everywhere else? Why so very many species
of the little birds known as honeycreepers
on the Hawaiian islands? Among those who
became fascinated by these questions were
Charles Darwin and Alfred
Russel
Wallace,
who between them established the field of
biogeography. Evolution was to explain much
of the puzzle, but it could only be solved
fully when combined with plate tectonics.
In this fascinating account, Dennis McCarthy
weaves together the rich and constantly
changing tapestry formed by life on a
dynamic planet. It is a tale of vast migrations,
the breakup of
supercontinents,
the opening
and closing of new seaways, the decline and
disappearance of whole faunas, and the power
of geology to fuel the engine of evolution.
