is a prominent Lithuanian
musicologist, Dr.
Habil,
in humanities, a professor of long
»standing at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre,
an active participant on the Lithuanian musical scene. The main areas of his interest
is music of the Lithuanian composers of the 20th century (especially that by Juozas
Gruodis and Julius Juzeliunas) as well as the exploration of the general problems of
the theory of music. A. J. Ambrazas has authored and compiled

monographs and
books on the theory of music. During an almost fifty year span of activity as musico¬
logist he has published around
200
articles on various issues of creativity and musical
life in response to the topical themes of the time. A considerable number of these
publications are still relevant today.
In the year
2004,
during the celebration of the seventieth anniversary of A. J. Am¬
brazas, an idea was born to render his work more accessible to the Lithuanian musi¬
cal community. The monograph Musical Traditions and the Present: Studies. Articles.
Reminiscences is a relatively small-scale selection of musicological works of various
genres composed by A. J. Ambrazas. It consists of an introduction, six chapters which
contain texts by A. J. Ambrazas, grouped by theme and character, and appendixes.
The first chapter Analytical Interpretations of A. J. Ambrazas Musicological Tra¬
dition serves as an introduction to the main directions and aspects of research and
musicological activities of the author. The commentary by Vytautas
Landsbergis
on
the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of A. J. Ambrazas
(1984)
presents a broad
panorama of the activities and standpoints of the musicologist. Texts by other authors
were written two decades later
(2004).
Gražina Daunoravičiené
discusses the main
object of A. J. Ambrazas investigations which is the formation of the Lithuanian na¬
tional musical school.
Irena Mikulevičiuté
writes about his contribution to the theory
of music and the methodology of its teaching.

tion, etc.) which may seem peripheral at first sight but are important in sum.
The second and main chapter of the monograph The Development of the Na¬
tional School of Lithuanian Composers comprises the texts by A. J. Ambrazas which
reflect the main direction of his research interests and investigations. The majority
of the texts are excerpts from his dissertation Juozas Gruodis and the Formation of
the School of Lithuanian Composers defended in
1991,
and the development of its
ideas in various articles and papers delivered in scientific conferences.
The article The National Style in
MraVemphasizes
the fact that this phenom¬
enon is much more complicated that a national peculiarity or national character. A
national peculiarity is an obligatory and essential trait of the national style, but these
two characteristics do not fully overlap. A mature national style is a system of nation¬
ally specific elements and their relations which comes into being when a national
culture reaches a sufficiently high level characterised by a steady development. The
basis of the national style comprises a complex of psychic and spiritual features typi¬
cal of every nation. Especially important for the national style of professional music is
employment of the folklore (traditional music), which is a direct embodiment of the
national character. The structure of the national style also encompasses traditions of
professional music of the country, a specific borrowing of features of other national
cultures as well as the individual properties of composers. The interaction of separate
individual styles results in gradual maturation and strengthening of the national style
against the background of national culture.
The article The Conception of the National School of Composers maintains that
this conception can be interpreted in two ways: either in relation to the national cul¬
ture ( a national school ), or to the aesthetic trend of creative work ( an art school ).
A school involves certain common components (the subject content and methods,
teachers, students, school functioning time, place, traditions). The greatest impor¬
tance among them is attached to the content, i. e. the programme which ensures the
character and unity of the school.
The function of the national school of composers is carried out by the conscious
aspiration of its representatives to emphasize the national originality in their work
and to create the national style as a complete system of separate national elements.
The national school of composers is a multi-step system uniting the results of
various local schools and individual composers.
The national school is a historically determined phenomenon. Depending on
the objective circumstances of the existence of a certain nation, schools appear at
different times and undergo several stages of evolution. New national schools were
born in East and North European countries at the beginning of the 19th century.
They successfully performed the task set by their initiators

national style.

General theoretical notions expounded at the beginning of the book are further
developed in other articles which discuss the school of Lithuanian composers.
The article The Features of Development of the School of Lithuanian Composers
maintains that the intensity and significance of the results of this development was
determined by the principles of the national music formulated by
M. K. Čiurlionis
and J. Gruodis, the most prominent Lithuanian composers of the first half of the 20th
century; these principles consist in a blend of specific features of authentic folklore
(traditional music) and new composition principles of professional music. The article
also elucidates influences of musical cultures of other European countries (Poland,
Russia, Germany, France, Czechia) on the Lithuanian school of composers which
at that time was in the making. The main stages of the development of the Lithu¬
anian school of composers, determined by political circumstances and changes in the
country s social life, are discussed as well.
