The first compilation of names of people buried in the older part of the cemetery,
with information about occupations, social groupings, dates of birth and death as well
as the location of the graves was the work of
Zofia Żuławski
in cooperation with Barbara
Kaszyczka and
Zofia Krasnosielecka.
The textual information in Information and plan of
the oldest part of the
Milanówek
Parish Cemetery was enriched by sketches of the sec¬
tion made by the surveyor
Mieczysława Fastyn,
a veteran from
„Mielizna - Milanówek.

2001,
Jan Kubek,
another veteran from the
„Mielizna - Milanówek
started to docu¬
ment the graves of those soldiers from
„Mielizna
who had been laid to rest in the cem¬
etery. At the request of the World-Wide Association of Home Army Veterans (Warsaw
branch) and
Wiesław
Kuske, the leader of the Committee compiling records about the
„Bażant
group, the first lists were made available. In
2003,
the list of soldiers from the
AK „Mielizna
was passed onto the World-Wide Association of Home Army Veterans
(Warsaw branch) as well as
Milanówek
Town Council and St
Jadwiga
Parish. On 26th
August
2006
a further list was passed on to the Town Council with a request that it as¬
sumed responsibility for looking after the graves of the soldiers from
„Mielizna . Jan
Kubek
continued to complete and extend documentation of soldiers from
„Mielizna
as
a service to the community.
In comparison with neighbouring towns,
Milanówek
Parish Cemetery is not an old
cemetery. With few exceptions, there are no artistically interesting graves. Its value lies is
the greenery and in the mass graves from the time of the Second World War. The largest
of these is the last resting place of participants in the Warsaw Uprising who died between
September
1944
and July
1945
in the Red Cross Hospital in
Milanówek
as result of their
wounds, emaciation and suffering. Other mass graves are those of the Home Army sol¬
diers from
„Mielizna
who were murdered by the Germans in the arsenal on 10th August
1944
and a grave containing ash from Auszwicz and
Pawiak,
a symbolic grave for the

citizens who were murdered in the prisoner and concentration camps in the
years
1940-1944.
Work is on going and on the basis of documents and contact with family
members, it has been possible to establish the names of several citizens of the town who
were in concentration camps or police custody and whose names which have not been
depicted on the memorial.
This guide is the result of a desire to present and commemorate a portrait of people
who not only formed an important part of the local community but also contributed
to Polish culture and education and who are buried in both the old and new parts of
the cemetery (burials from
1939
to
2009).
An undeniable merit of this publication is the
inclusion of new and as yet unknown photographs and documents. Dependent on the
information obtained and the source material, the guide includes extensive biographical
information or short notes. Readers may notice a certain inconsistency of format among
the biographies; however, as they were prepared by family members, the editorial team de¬
cided to leave them in this form, making only small editorial changes.
Preparation work involved a detailed survey of the whole cemetery, from the oldest to
the newest part with the aim of recording all the information recorded on the gravestones.
The inscriptions are not complete, partly because of the poor condition of some of the grave¬
stones but also because during the time of Stalin and Communism full and true biographical
information was not always recorded on the memorial stones. Information about burials
has been continually updated. (The most recent information was received in June
2009.)
A second important source of information was information provided by relatives as well
as rich home archives. We had an excellent response to appeals placed in local papers and
on the internet pages of the town and parish. We would like here to express our sincere
thanks for the understanding, goodwill and trust which was shown by those who entrusted
us with their irreplaceable documents and photographs.

Milanówek

The collection of profiles of those buried in the cemetery is a living memorial

a testa¬
ment to the great involvement of local community members in the battle for Polish Indepen¬
dence, to their contribution in shaping Polish culture and education and to the invaluable
and unmistakable imprint they left on the local community in which they lived.
The editorial team accepts that among the material they have collected there may be some
inaccuracies, omissions or even errors: we would therefore welcome any comments, clarifica¬

Milanówek początkowo nie posiadał własnego cmentarza, a zmarłych chowano w oko¬
licznych miejscowościach, tj. w Grodzisku Mazowieckim, Brwinowie i Żukowie (kościół pa¬
rafialny dla Letniska Milanówek do czasu erygowania parafii św. Jadwigi Śląskiej w
1928
г.),
a nawet w Warszawie.
Pierwsza wzmianka dotycząca założenia milanowskiego cmentarza datowana jest na
12.10.1928
r. i dotyczy złożenia wniosku przez ks. Leopolda Jarosza i członków Rady Para¬
fialnej do Państwowego Urzędu Ziemskiego w Skierniewicach o wyrażenie zgody na nabycie
przez zarząd rzymsko

katolickiej parafii św. Jadwigi w Milanówku gruntu pod cmentarz

utworzenia drogi dojazdowej do cmentarza.

r. został spisany akt notarialny (Rep.
673),
na mocy którego parafia nabyła place po

m2 od Antoniny Tłoczyńskiej z d. Górec¬
kiej oraz od Józefa Swinarskiego. Projekt geodezyjny opracował inż. Leon Bałdyga.2
Nieznanym wydarzeniem był pochówek na cmentarzu w Milanówku dwóch żołnierzy
węgierskich w sierpniu
1944
r. (w tym czasie Węgrzy stacjonowali w gimnazjum na ul. Space¬
rowej i w innych domach w Milanówku). Groby te po wojnie zostały ekshumowane i obecnie
nie istnieją.
Abp Antoni Szlagowski, wydając

r. dekret dotyczący przyłączenia obszaru
cmentarza podlegającego terytorialnie parafii Żuków do parafii Milanówek, usankcjonował
stan faktyczny.
W celu powiększenia cmentarza ks. Józef Woźniak nabył

zakupione od rodzin: Szustakowskich i Borkowskich i stanowią przedłużenie najstarszej
części cmentarza w kierunku zachodnim.5
W związku z powiększeniem cmentarza założono dwie dodatkowe boczne bramy od
ul. Wojska Polskiego, jedną bramę od ul. Północnej, gdzie usytuowano dzwonnicę, doprowa¬
dzono też wodę do nowej części cmentarza.

przez parafię placów od strony ul. Barwnej:

Milanówek
cemetery
At first,
Milanówek
did not have its own cemetery and its dead were buried in the locality
-
Grodzisk Mazowiecki, Brwinów
and
Żuków
or even in Warsaw. (The Summer Resort of
Milanówek
did not have its own parish church until the establishment of the parish of Saint
Jadwiga
of Silesia in
1928).
First mention of establishing a cemetery in
Milanówek
was on
12th October
1928
when a request was lodged by Priest Leopold
Jarosz
and members of the
Parish Council to the State Land Department in
Skierniewice
for permission for the Roman
Catholic parish of Saint
Jadwiga
to purchase about
6
acres of land in
Chrzanów Mały
from
the
Packo
family for use as a cemetery. Official permission was granted on 17th December
1928
and three contracts were signed on 23rd August
1929
in the legal chambers of
Tomasz
Błeszyński
in
Grodzisk Mazowiecki
for the purchase of land for a cemetery in
Milanówek.
The largest plot of land was
9,245
square metres and belonged to Wincent
Packo
and his
wife Paulina as well as their son,
Józef Packo
and his wife,
Lucyna Genowefa.
The par¬
ish bought
5,575
square metres of a second larger plot belonging to Wincent
Packo.
The
owners of the third plot of land which was purchased
( 6,210
sq m) were
Cecylia Szewczyk
(daughter of Wincent and Paulina
Packo),
her husband
Wacław,
Waleria
Zíeilnska
and her
husband
Stanisław.
The combined area of the land bought by Priest Leopold
Jarosz
on behalf
of the Saint
Jadwiga
parish in
Milanówek
was
21,030
sq metres. However, although all the
legal requirements were satisfied, a cemetery could not be established because of opposition
from the owners of neighbouring land and a law which was then in force which forbade the
creation of a cemetery within a distance of
150
metres from an inhabited dwelling. Appeals
by the parish priest
Walenty Zasada
to the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the mid 30s for per¬
mission to establish a cemetery in
Milanówek
were unsuccessful.
The outbreak of war in
1939,
the fighting in the area around
Milanówek
and the bombings
by German planes hastened the creation of the cemetery. According to a record by Priest
Walenty Zasada,
the first victims of the war in
Milanówek
were buried on 9th September
1939
on land bought by the parish for this purpose.: Soldiers of September

consecration of the cemetery took place on 23rd October
1939.
The act of consecration was

1944,

obtained the consent from the church authorities to purchase

land to create an access road for the cemetery. On the 28th June
1944,
a contact (Rep
673)
was
signed by which-the parish bought

square metre of Land from
Antoniną Tłoczyńska
(nee
Górecka) and Józef Swinarski.
The necessary planning and surveying work was done by
Leon
Bałdyga.
A little known event was the burial in the
Milanówek
cemetery of two Hungarian soldiers
in July
1944 .
(At this time the Hungarians were stationed in the secondary school on
Space¬
rowa
Street and in other houses in
Milanówek.)
These graves were exhumed after the war
and currentlydo not exist.
An edict issued on 29th April
1946
by Archbishop
Antoni Szlagowski
linked that part of
the cemetery which lay within the parish of
Żuków
to that of
Milanówek,
so making official
the prevailing status quo.
In order to extend the cemetery, on 26th April
1952

square metres in the area of the village

from the
Grodzisk Mazow¬

Town Co-operative,
„Samopomoc Chłopska .

efforts
resulted in a land registry record for the cemetery (5th September
1969),
the installation of
a water supply, conservation of the graves of the soldiers who fell in September
1939
and
of those who died in the Polish Red Cross hospital after the Warsaw uprising, a memorial
plaque commemorating the prisoners of Pawik, Auszwicz and other concentration camps as
well as the grave of the writer
Ferdynand Antoni Ossendowski
In
1989,
Priest Edmund
Nowak
attempted to extend the cemetery. On 22nd June
1994,
his
successor, Priest
Zbigniew Szysz
completed a transaction to buy an area of
9,024
sq metres.
The plots were bought from the Szustakowski and Borkowski families and allowed the oldest
part of the cemetery to be extended to the west.
As a result of the extension of the cemetery, two additional side entrances were added
from
Wojska Polskiego
Street and one from
Północna
where the bell was sited: water was also
installed in the new part of the cemetery.
The most recent extension to the
Milanówek
Parish Cemetery was the purchase by the par¬
ish of land beside
Barwna
street:
6,519
sq metres from
Marianna Gołowaska
(4th October
2000
-
a third of this was a gift from
Milanówek
Town) and
3,538
sq metres from Helena
Kędzierska
(this purchase took place on 16th February
2006
was funded in equal measure by the town
authorities by the parish).
The first superintendent of
Milanówek
cemetery was
Włodzimierz Głodek
(1890-1953),
buried in Kw.
XVII,
Rz.
AL Gł, Nr
g.
1.
His successor was
Wawrzyniec Wąż
(1912-1996)
who
fulfilled these duties for
28
years (Kw. IV, Rz.
Al. B n/m, Nr g.
2).
The current superintendent of
the cemetery is
Piotr Jóżwik
(from July
1981)
