Mimo pewnej deprecjacji politycznej ziemi bytomskiej po tych wydarze¬
niach, w dalszym ciągu tereny te odgrywały ważną rolę gospodarczą, cze¬
go przejawem jest stopniowe wychodzenie regionu z kryzysu politycznego i go¬
spodarczego w
XV
wieku.
Summary
During the Middle Ages,
Bytom
performed a special role in Upper Silesia.
During this time, there were three administrative units, the centre of which
constituted castle, and then
Bytom.
These were castellany, duchy and
Bytom
dekanate
which was subordinated to the Cracow bishopric. The castle was the
castellan s residence and the city (ducal castle)
-
the duke s and dekanate s resi¬
dence.
Before
1179
Bytom
had been connected with Little Poland and then with
Duchy of
Opole
and
Racibórz.
Geographical location and natural conditions
had a big influence on the significance of the region. It was evidenced by the
strategic location along some important trade routes, which were leading from
the east to the west: from Cracow to
Wrocław
and also by galena deposits. The
documents containing information about the exploitation of iron ores, lead
ores and small amount of silver in this area remained.
There also existed mines, among others in: Zversov,
Biskupice, Piekary,
Во-
browniki,
Radzionków, Miechowice
and Bobrek. Economic significance of the
region is also supported by the source data concerning the fair in
Bytom, Repty
and other towns.
The area of
Bytom
Castellany was in the shape of quadrilateral and its bor¬
der lines shaped the natural watersheds of Brynica,
Kłodnica, Rawa
and
Mała
Panew and extensive forests in the north. In the western part only the border
lines were devoided of natural borders.
Political change and economic collapse caused by the flood of mine subsoil
waters contributed to the disappearance of castellany in half of
XIV
century.
This new status quo even strengthened the division of
Bytom
Duchy in
1369.
