MUSIC SCHOOLING
IN POLAND IN THE YEARS
1945-1964
Organizational-program assumptions
and selected elements of reality
Revolutionary transformations of the country political system based on the
Soviet patterns covered also culture and education including music schools. Presi¬
dent of the Polish People s Republic
Bolesław Bierut
announced broad patronage
over culture, regarding renovation and development of artistic institutions and cul¬
tural life basing on new foundations. The country cultural policy was based on such
factors as, political-social changes, availability of education and culture, and con¬
sistence with the basic ideas of socialistic humanism. Actually it lead to spreading
ideology on the whole sphere of social life including music education, artistic ac¬
tivity as well as didactic and educational objectives to be accomplished by music
academies.
This paper aims at presenting the evolution of music advanced schooling
in Poland in the years
1945-1964,
development of organizational structures, and
problems connected with the educational process of artists and music teachers, as
well as legal documentation accompanying the process of music schools ideological
transformations. The purpose of the research was to systemize knowledge on the
problems connected with advanced music schooling after the second world war: its
organization, legal basis, the government cultural policy, reforms of syllabuses,
problems of pedagogical supervision, development of teaching staff, and participa¬
tion of students in the country social and artistic activities. The most important was
to explain the cause-and effect relationship by comparing assumptions with ac¬
complishment of objectives set by activists of the Polish Party of Workers
(PZPR)
and to document and assess the role of music academies in the ideological evolu¬
tion of the country, in Poland, in the years
1945-1964.
The whole process of pro¬
gressing changes taking place within the advanced music schooling system has been
analyzed in terms of political conditionings of the new ideology the Polish country.
The investigations cover the whole area of Poland within the borders estab¬
lished after 1
945.
The work is of chronological-problem character and concerns the
years
1945-1964.
The work consists of six chapters and their arrangement results from research
assumptions.

Summary
Legal acts concerning advanced music schooling in the first decade of the so¬
cialistic country existence referred to acts that had been formulated by
M

before
1939.
Legislation continuity of those documents involved the necessity of
reviewing music academies in the period between the wars. It was also necessary to
analyze the structure of the schooling system in order to understand the logic of
evolution of the artistic schools structural formation after
1945.
In the first period of the Polish People s Republic development there are no
signs of ideological changes of the music education process. We can rather talk
about continuation of schooling organizational structure created in the years
1937-
-1939
as the three-step division of school which was preserved, and changes dur¬
ing the period of

years concerned only terminology, didactic-educational objec¬
tives, and inner structures of schools and academies of music. The two systems
differed in terms of the teaching and education ideology and indoctrination of
teaching staff and students. This, previously unknown process of political trans¬
formations interfering even with the choice of music literature, was realized by
obligatory ideological self- education of the teaching staff of schools and academies
of music. The idea

restrictive actions against teachers and students appeared in
1953
and caused their firm reaction in the form of passive attitudes and resistance
to lectures organized by the departments of the theory of communism, propagat¬
ing ideological and program goals of (the Polish Party of Workers)
PZPR
and the
philosophy of socialistic humanism.
The subjects in the work are arranged chronologically, in seven chapters.
First of them demonstrates the between-wars achievements of the Ministry of
Religion and Public Education in the field of development of music education in Poland
and legislative continuity in the further period of music education development.
In terms of damages suffered by Poland in the field of music schooling system
and the country cultural policy after the year
1945,
structural reforms and the ed¬
ucational system in the music schooling system of the I and II degree in the years
1945-1964,
have been emphasized.
In chapter II, characteristics of events resulting from structural changes in ad¬
vanced music education after the year
1945,
have been discussed. It was impor¬
tant to focus on normative acts and legislation of new new school structures, as
well as isolation of courses and new goals, scheduled for music advanced schools,
from a big number of other laws. Structural reforms from the years
1945-1962,
that is, till the moment of gaining by the music advanced schools the status of uni¬
versities, have been discussed. The position of music schools was indicated within
the structure of advanced schooling system.
Lodging and material resources of he music schools have been analyzed in
chapter III including the development of libraries, publishing offices and instru¬
ments management, as well as subjects concerning dormitories.
Chapter IV deals with problems connected with the teaching staff of these
schools. In order to present this issue in an objective way, ideological actions, re¬
strictions toward teachers and discipline methods have been presented. Artistic and
scientific activities of music schools teaching staff have been presented and ana¬
lyzed. This facilitated to order and classify their scientific output and achievements.

Chapter V is devoted to the problems of didactic and educational activities of
advanced music schools in the years
1945-1964.
Thus the rules of students artis¬
tic and pedagogical trainings have been presented, syllabuses have been analyzed,
education of musicians has been discussed in the non-stationary system of studies,
and assessment rules for diploma and Master s degree studies have been analyzed.
It has been completed with an analysis of
non
academic activities and student as¬
sistance clubs.
Chapter VI deals with educational activity of music schools. The subject of
the research were relations of educational ideals from
1945-1964
with goals of ed¬
ucation assigned for the advanced music schools, as well as fight for students points
of view and participation of youth organizations in realization of educational ob¬
jectives.
The following chapter is connected with problems of students and graduates
of music schools. Thus, recruitment rules and methods have been analyzed. Sources
of financial support methods have been analyzed. The chapter has been concluded
with qualitative and quantitative studies of students within the considered years,
as well as employment policy of music schools graduates. The dissertation is fin¬
ished with annexes, lists of tables, bibliography, sources and summary.
